Ruta de las Flores is a gem of an El Salvadorian region that winds through five small colonial towns. At less than two hours from San Salvador and Santa Ana, it’s a popular day-trip destination for the weekend food festival in Juayúa, the center of Ruta de las Flores. But the area offers so much more than what can fit in one day.

Endless TSA lines, canceled flights, lost luggage, crowded trains with broken air-conditioning…as much as we love getting away, the stress of it can sometimes make vacations feel like more trouble than they’re worth. But unless you’re willing to stifle your inner travel bug and feeling of wanderlust and resolve to live the rest of your days never straying far from home, travel anxiety and stress are necessary evils you’re bound to encounter once in while.

Everyone’s definition of vacay mode is different, from the poolside sunbather (with cute floppy hat and piña colada in tow, of course) to the can’t-sit-still-for-five-minutes adventure lover. Having those contrasting personalities on the same trip can cause headaches for your itinerary—unless you pick a destination that has something for everyone, like Panama City Beach. The beachfront town on Florida’s gulf coast beckons year-round with an abundance of activities for every travel personality.

Surfing is hard enough without adding in the stress of feeling like a nuisance just for being a beginner in the water among seasoned vets in the art of hanging ten. There’s so much to remember, like the gear, to keep your mouth closed in the water, and how to stand the heck up on a board, to name a few things. So, for newbie surfers, picking a beach with beginner-friendly waves and a welcoming vibe is key.

Either-or scenarios are a fundamental part of planning a vacation: Beach or mountains? Long-term stay or sojourn? JOMO-inspired activities or FOMO-worthy escapades? Well if your current travel criteria doesn’t yet include researching the energy (yes, energy) of any locale in question, allow me to change your ways and introduce vortices (that’s the plural form of “vortex,” BTW): concentrated tornadoes of energy that cluster on certain spots of the globe.

New York City’s Lower East Side isn’t exactly known for being calm and peaceful, but it’s also one of the best areas to stay if you want to experience the authentic culture, nightlife, and food scenes the city has to offer. So what’s a mindful traveler to do?

We don’t play favorites when it comes to travel destinations. We want to go everywhere. But making a list of the top timely destinations helps us determine where to go now. Places, like trends or people, can have their moments, fueled by forces that are obvious—big cultural openings, national anniversaries, global sporting events—or intangible. (Ever notice how all the trendsetters seem to suddenly flock to a certain island in the same season, as if by magnetic force?)

Yes, the super bloom of wildflowers in California is too pretty for words—as are the swarms of butterflies they’ve attracted this year. But Californians (and New Yorkers, and everyone else), hear me out: The reason to visit Texas is not Austin. It’s not SXSW. It’s not even Marfa, with its fake Prada store and its art colony-on-the-moon vibe. It’s the bluebonnets, which, like clockwork each March, blanket the Texas roadsides from Big Bend over to Brownsville all the way to Beaumont.

In the past few years, Cape Town’s quickly become the wellness capital of South Africa, making it a coastal playground for healthy travel. The local currency might be the rand, but the social one is definitely being up for an adventure.

Raise your hand if you’re sick of winter. Recent months have brought about some of the coldest temperatures on record, not to mention devastating ice storms and ferocious blizzards. And unfortunately the snow doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon. But there is a light at the end of this winter tunnel. As much of the country shovels the driveway, Southern California is gearing up for the super bloom.

When you think of an ordinary volcano, you probably picture fiery red lava spewing from a collapsed mountaintop or perhaps oozing down the slope with a dull glow. Far from ordinary is Indonesia’s Kawah Ijen volcano, which awes with a stunningly blue illumination. Kawah Ijen displays one of the world’s most mesmerizing natural wonders, but you need to hike the crater before dawn to see it.

Canada is generally a really pleasant and low-stress place to visit—everyone is so nice!—but its charming citizens are hardly the only draw. The country is also packed with awe-inspiring natural features perfect for backpack-toting hiker babes, cuddly polar bears (okay, maybe not so cuddly…but still), and as much maple syrup as your wanderlusting heart could desire.

Travel may well be good for your health, but it’s not so great for the environment. In fact, a recent study showed that tourism accounts for nearly 10 percent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions. But before you despair becoming a hypocrite who petitions lawmakers to take climate change seriously while simultaneously planning as many trips as possible for 2019, take comfort in knowing that even environmentalists travel—they simply do so mindfully.
