I'm a late 50's scientist living in a small village. Our travel motto is if you can't get shot there it's probably not interesting enough to bother going. In saying that we are not reckless and tend to stay in the better parts of town. We try to get out and about but take simple precautions like under dressing and not carrying expensive electronics on show and find this allows us to walk unmolested in most cities. We hire cars for travel where possible. We are trying to get as many national pins as possible.
Since 2014 I have been travelling extensively on business as an open innovation scientist. It's changed my perspective on hotels. I've become less tolerant I think but appreciative of hotels that treat solo business travellers in a friendly way, sometimes it's a lonely road.
