Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre is NZ's most established captive breeding facility located just 20 minutes north of Masterton. Set in 942 hectares of ancient Podocarp forest, Pukaha is home to many endangered species including takahē, kōkako, kākāriki, hīhī (stitchbird), kāka and several kiwi including Manukura, the ōnly white kiwi in captivity. Our Kākā Cafe overlooks the takahē enclosure. Watch out for the cheeky kākā parrots who regularly visit the outdoor cafe area (please remember not to feed the birds). Visitors can join daily talks or choose from our suite of guided tours. We offer Night Tours (listen for wild kiwi and discover glow worms). Our Hīkoi o Pūkaha is a unique cultural tour where you can learn stories of the Tangata Whenua - includes kai (food). Bookings essential. [no pets]

    Excellent Experience!
Not our first visit to Pukaha and it won't be the last. We went on a cloudy, drizzly day, and it was the best! All the staff were welcoming and friendly. A special shout-out to Evelyn at the front desk who made us truly feel at home. Well worth the detour and the time!

    Amazing place!
We popped in here on our way back to aukland, it was wonderful! Lovely place that does great work. Very passionate staff too, in particularly a lovely lady (sorry I didn’t get her name) who told us all about the Maori culture and the wonderful values they hold, some of which are similar to the birds she was feeding. Really lovely lady who made our visit :) thank you!

    Glad we went!
We spent five hours here on a rainy day and learned so much about New Zealand wildlife. The naturalist who spoke about kiwis and eels was very passionate and knowledgeable. We engaged with some endangered birds and did a 4 km hike through lush native vegetation. We are so glad we went.

A trip to Pūkaha is a must!!!
A visit to Pūkaha is meeting the birds of NZ. Walking through the forest , an easy walk, gives you the opportunity to see the birds close by. Just be silent, Watch and enjoy! I strongley recommend a trip with a guide. Our guide Gaeslyn took time to give al kind information about the birds in a friendly way. And knowing they are volunteers that protect the flora and fauna is very honourable! The guide is a bit of money more worth for nature! And don’t forget a donation at the end of the visit so we help Pūkaha, the birds and our nature!

Brilliant wildlife sanctuary half way between Napier and Wellington
The Pukaha National Wildlife Centre is one of New Zealand's premiere places to see endangered birds. Set in one of the last remaining natural forest settings, the centre allows visitors to view these magnificent animals in their natural habitats. The kiwi building is also quite something with 2 different types of kiwis on display and a great talk offered by the keepers

    An excellent day out
I visited to walk the loop track and take my advice: start from the Redwoods end, which is by far less steep than starting from the end closest to the visitor centre. Some of the birds were nesting so weren't visible, but there were plenty of others to see around the wildlife centre. Only one main path isn't accessible by mobility scooter - check in with the staff on reception about the best walking paths for you. There is a cafe and toilets on-site.

An absolute great venue for a seminar
My team and I stayed at the venue enjoying the tranquil setting and great facilities especially as they are quite new. We had a mix of the twin units and a bunkroom and we were very happy with the accommodation. Also we had a one day wānanga (seminar) there with catering provided by the venue. This included dinner on the night we arrived, breakfast and then morning and afternoon tea and lunch. The kai (food) was scrumptious, filling and plenty of it. Our guests / participants in the wānanga were very complimentary of the menu. Some of our guests also went into the reserve and came back with big smiles on their faces and lots of photos to brag about. sadly I didn't get a chance to visit the reserve but its definitely on my to do list. Overall a great experience and looking forward to bringing my extended whānau (whānau) to enjoy the facilities.

    Great experience
An opportunity to see native birds including kiwis. A guided tour is a must to get the best from your experience - as the guides can tell you way more than you could learn just by yourself. A couple of hours well spent.

    excellent tour
We booked a guided tour and unfortunately our guide was sick the day of the tour, however one of the staff who grew up on the island offered to give us a tour instead. It was a great tour and we really appreciated his knowledge and insights into the conservation efforts of the Centre. If we make it back to NZ I would definitely go again.

    Adult birthday party
We had an adults birthday party at Pukaha in the Huia room. The staff were very welcoming, helpful and informative. Answered all our questions and guided us throughout their facilities. The food catering from the cafe was good quality and hearty amount. Pleasant time had by all
