The fabulous state parks of the Florida Keys are somehow hidden gems and Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological SP is no exception. Only a small fee to get in and several wonderful trails through the forests, fossilized coral, and old machinery. A great way to spend an hour or so. Highly recommended.

What a hidden gem. Interesting to learn about the Keystone that makes up the upper Key islands. The native plant/tree hammock was very informative and beautiful. Staff were over the top friendly and willing to share their knowledge. HIGHLY recommend a visit!

Windley Key offered a birding walk in the early Saturday morning I joined a walk of 12 birders. We arrived before 8:00 AM and the gate was locked. The entrance area is small and 3 cars crammed in to wait for the ranger to open the gate. There is a welcome center with a display of fossils, Flagler Railroad information and items for purchase. Restrooms and a drink machine are here. A large veranda is a nice spot to view the coral quarry and wait for birds to fly over. The trails are nicely marked and maintained. Do consider wearing insect repellent as parts of the walk are near red, black and white Mangroves.

You'll see a couple of signs about 1000 ft before the small turnoff and entrance, which also has large signs. The path just to the left of the visitor center - small but excellent display - and ticket window leads to the quarry and walls with ALL THE FOSSILS! What a TREASURE. Support the NPS with a donation more than the $2.50 entrance fee they were charging at the time of this posting.

Great walk through natural old Florida Keys habitats. Shaded and cool. Interesting coral fossils of geologic time and yet connected to the marvel of the Flagler Railroad construction. A nice hidden gem we drove past for years. Spend 1-2 hours away from the modern world and take a step back in time

A small state park on the Keys in Florida. Admission is $2.50 per person. There is a visitor center and several small hiking trails. During the hike you can discover several animals and you will also learn a lot about plants and the history of the island. Highly recommended....

The fill to used to redistribute sediment to create a 120-mile overpass out of the island chain came from this quarry. The nature trails have a haunting beauty. The impressive stubborness of Coral Key (the Spanish name was "bone keys") limestone is impressed upon here.

The history and the fossils are fascinating. The walking trails have flora names, and the park ranger will allow visitors to borrow a park guide, which is quite helpful. The trails are shaded, but not suitable for wheelchairs or for walkers with disabilities -- lots of roots and uneven areas. Thoroughly enjoyed learning about the workers and how the limestone quarries were used in the railroad construction.
