The Rock Art Centre told the story of the amazing rock art produced by the Maori hundreds of years ago. There were 8 original pieces on display, plus replicas of others, and many short videos to watch. One section invited visitors to enter a replica of a shelter and watch the story of the rock art painted on the ceiling. It showed a Taniwha (spiritual guardian) from the ceiling of a shelter in Opihi. In addition, there were modern pieces that were inspired by the ancient rock art. You can opt for a self-guided visit of the Rock Art Centre or book a guided tour of the centre followed by a visit to the actual rock art sights in your own vehicle.

What a lovely and important museum to visit. We loved the museography, all the videos they had talking about the paintings from the Māori ancestors and to have a lady giving to the public explanations. The store has many unique souvenirs and T-shirts.

Just loved this place - the exhibits were terrific, thought provoking, full of the legends and history of Ngai Tahu. We were fascinated, and sometimes guilty, on a learning curve, and just plain impressed over and over again. I'd go back again if in the area just to see it all again and see what I missed. Very professional and something for everybody. Just go!
