A monk drove from here to protest the war
This is a must visit in Hue not only for the beautiful pagoda standing by the river but also the point where a monk started his drive from here to protest against the Vietnam war. It was so heartbreaking to see the blue American car he drove but conveys very heavy message that the peace is precious. This place became one of the highlights of my trip. Each stair to the pagoda is huge, you need to step up with energy. The scenery is great to see the river and boats passing by.

    Captivating atmosphere amidst picturesque scenery
As we approached Thien Mu Pagoda, nestled on the banks of the Perfume River, an air of tranquility enveloped us. The pagoda's elegant architecture, blending seamlessly with the lush surroundings, created a captivating atmosphere that left us in awe. Upon entering the grounds, we were greeted by the iconic Phuoc Duyen Tower, its seven tiers reaching towards the sky, adorned with intricate carvings and Buddha statues. The tower's reflection shimmered in the nearby lotus ponds, adding to the serene ambiance. We strolled through the meticulously manicured gardens, admiring the vibrant bonsai trees and fragrant flowers that lined the pathways. The gentle breeze carried the soothing sounds of wind chimes, further enhancing the peaceful atmosphere.

A religious and cultural centre with a lot of history.
The Thiên Mụ Pagoda (which means “Temple of the Celestial Lady”), was built in 1601 as a rather simple building, but was expanded in later years. It is a central point of Vietnamese culture and religion. It is a beautiful building with a very long history. In 1963 (during the Vietnam War years) there were many anti-government protests over the then South Vietnamese government policies, particularly its policies against Buddhists. Thien Mu Pagoda became a major organising point for the Buddhist movement. It also became the location of hunger strikes, barricades and protests against the government. On the grounds of the Pagoda is housed the Austin car that was driven by Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk. He drove to the centre of Saigon (known today as Ho Chi Minh City) and set himself on fire in what was the first of a series of self-immolations by Buddhist monks, protesting against the government’s religious policies. In this way the plight of Buddhist followers was brought to the attention of the international community.

A place of serenity - a UNESCO site
You can't quite climb up the pagoda but you get quite a peaceful stroll in the grounds. It is a working temple so monks get up at 3.30am to toll the bell. There is a timetable printed on the grounds to inform the visitor what the monks do and when. There is also a hall at which you have to remove your shoes to enter. Beautiful flowers and fruit trees adorn the grounds. Read up before you go. Like many tourist attractions in Hue, there is not much information at the sites.

Nice ride on the perfume river to get to the pagoda
Took the dragoon boat on the perfume river to the Thien Mu Pagoda. The pagoda, at 33 ft high and dates to the 17th century. It was constructed by the emperor as a dedication to some of his historical family members. All around the Pagoda are various Stella with writings in stone. Immediately behind the pagoda is the Buddhist Temple that was constructed in 1844. The Temple is rather impressive with various monks walking around adjusting all the offerings. Behind the temple is some beautiful gardens and the living accommodations for the monks. We heard that shorts were not allowed in the temple, but we noticed many tourists in shorts. The only requirement is to remove your shoes before entering the temple.

I was visiting Chua Thien Mu for the first time in Hue, Vietnam. This ancient temple looked very beautiful and had a unique architectural design. Unfortunately, it was raining and cloudy on that day. My family and I were taking some pictures at this temple to capture the memory.

A heavenly experience on the Perfume River
The stunning views of the Perfume River from this historic site are simply breathtaking. As we climbed the steps, each level revealed more beauty. The iconic seven-story pagoda against the backdrop of lush greenery is a photographer's dream. We felt so energized by the peaceful atmosphere and the incredible panorama.
