Quake City tells stories of heroism and hope from the Canterbury earthquakes. This special exhibition from Canterbury Museum explains the science and the phenomenon of liquefaction – when the shaking liquefied the ground and it bubbled up burying street and sinking buildings. Quake City charts the aftermaths of the September 2010 and 22 February 2011 earthquakes and the extraordinary response of the emergency services, international rescue teams, the thousands of volunteers who pitched in to help – construction workers, the Student Volunteer Army, the Farmy Army – and the incredible resilience of Canterbury’s communities. The exhibition includes some of the objects which have defined the Canterbury earthquakes including the spire of Christ Church Cathedral and the clocks from the former railway station. Well worth a visit
An absolute essential place to go if you have any time in Christchurch. This small but well presented museum so clearly lays out the experience of the city over the earthquakes of 2010/11 and beyond. The exhibits are so sensitively done and give you so much information which is engaging and emotive. There is some interactive elements, and by the end you feel like you really understand what caused the earthquakes, how people were affected and the aftermath, including now we are over 10 years on. We were here for about 2 hours. My only negative is that because there are a few videos sometimes there is noise coming from lots of places which can feel a bit distracting.

Gives good context of the earthquake, a very thoughtful exhibition
This had been recommended to us, and went on a stormy cold day - ended up there for about an hour and a half. It is a small museum, but very thoughtful. Staff were welcoming and explained the context of the Christchurch earthquake (and later also offered some other ideas for exploring the city, which was excellent)! Definitely take the time to sit and listen to the individual stories (and that follow up one’s done more recently). Very personal, honest and worth visiting.

An interesting visit but could be more interactive for the price
A small but nice wander through photo and video displays of the earthquake. The experience needs more interactive displays to keep kids involved. Admission was $20 per adult and $16 student.

An experience not to be missed
The displays were thoughtfully and expertly presented. But the exhibition that will stay with me was the series of videos of people, of all ages, who experienced the earthquake. I was moved to tears during more than one recollection. There was no sound from the many audience member each, I suspect, was a saddened – and heartened – as I was. Highly recommended.

    So moving and emotional
Such a moving experience. We intended a fairly quick visit, but, ended up staying for hours watching the incredible videos of people involved in the quakes. So well put together and a thoroughly moving/emotional experience.

Fantastic exhibit that is well worth your time
This is a great display that teaches about both the science of earthquakes and the emotional impact of 2011 Christchurch earthquake. The videos of people who lived through the quake relating their experiences are incredibly powerful. I found myself spellbound. Well worth the time to visit. Very highly recommended.

    Quake City Museum
The Quake City Museum has static displays and visual/audio displays of the numerous earthquakes that has hit Christchurch over the years. The most moving display was videos of people describing their personal experiences surviving the most recent earthquake. Some people were in tears describing the deaths of their loved one's. Plan on two hours to tour the museum.

    Must visit when in Chch
We learned so much about the amazing but devastating effects of earthquakes here. This exhibit is an eye opener to the catastrophic power of nature and the effects it can have on everyday people. Interactive and informative. This is well worth a visit when you’re in Christchurch. The staff at the front desk were also very helpful and answered some of our questions at the end too. Must visit.

    Informative & Moving
This is a must see, it gives graphic photographic description of the damage done by the earthquake. Most powerful is the video footage of rescuers & survivors as they describe their experiences at the time. They then speak about how their lives have moved on 10 years later. Most informative. Highly recommend.

    Do sit through the videos
A small but moving exhibition about the earthquakes Christchurch has experienced, in particular the ones in 2010 and 2011 that destroyed the city centre. We spent a couple of hours in here by the time we'd listened to the testimony of people affected by the 2011 quake. However, while it's understandable that the focus is on the affect it had on local people, there was barely anything about the overseas victims and the impact on their families, which felt quite an omission considering how many there were. Maybe I missed something?
