Quake City tells stories of heroism and hope from the Canterbury earthquakes. This special exhibition from Canterbury Museum explains the science and the phenomenon of liquefaction – when the shaking liquefied the ground and it bubbled up burying street and sinking buildings. Quake City charts the aftermaths of the September 2010 and 22 February 2011 earthquakes and the extraordinary response of the emergency services, international rescue teams, the thousands of volunteers who pitched in to help – construction workers, the Student Volunteer Army, the Farmy Army – and the incredible resilience of Canterbury’s communities. The exhibition includes some of the objects which have defined the Canterbury earthquakes including the spire of Christ Church Cathedral and the clocks from the former railway station. Ferrymead Park features an early 1900s (Edwardian) township and the park has a variety of restored cottages plus a school house, church and businesses which reflect the period and allow visitors to experience life for the early residents of Christchurch including the smell of a coal range and the sounds of a tram rattling past the door.

The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora is a beautiful historic precinct in the city centre. Once home to the university, it is now run by a charity for the arts, education, and creativity. On site you will find galleries, museums, retailers, cinemas, eateries and bars, accommodation, venues and other spaces. Look around for yourself (free) or take a guided tour (paid) to go behind the scenes. Hospitality options include food trucks, cafés, and award-winning wine bar. Learn about the post-earthquake restoration at the free Revival exhibition. Māori art on site includes Te Waiatatanga Mai o te Atua, a free exhibition by Ngāi Tahu artists, and Te Whare Tapere, a Māori arts space.
