The Perlan Museum is an unmissable experience in Reykjavik. The museum is built around 6 former water tanks situated on a foresty hill called Öskjuhlíð. Just down the road from the BSI bus terminal is this amazing museum. The price for this is a bit overly priced as with most things in Reykjavik, especially museums but it’s well worth it. The museum has a range a displays and exhibits about the natural landscape of Iceland such as volcanoes and glaciers. There are 2 shows; one is the aurora borealis/northern lights show in the planetarium which is 20 minutes long and is so fantastic, it tells you all you need to know about the northern lights and the imagery of the film is stunning. Secondly is the lava show which tells you about the recent volcanic eruptions of the volcano near Grindavik on the Reykanes peninsula. The museum is also home to the world’s first and only man-made ice cave which is great if you are unable to do an actual ice cave tour. The ice cave is 100 metres long and is a great experience and it is so unique. The views from the top of the dome over Reykjavik are also stunning. This place was very interesting to me and is an unmissable experience while in Reykjavik.
Dear Ryan, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. Glad you enjoyed our Ice cave - one of the highlights here in Perlan. It’s made of 350 tons of natural ice and snow, and inside, it’s around −10°C, making the experience even more memorable. A special monument has been made in our ice cave, as we keep a piece from Ok there, the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier due to climate change. Hope to see you again at Perlan. Kind regards, Elvar

Walked there from the cathedral in reykjavic, entry cost really good for the variety of different experiences. We finished it off with a couple of drinks in the rotating restaurant and found it a wonderful experience, we absolutely loved the Ice Cave. All staff were really kind and helpful. Recommend a visit here
Dear Lesmas, Thank you for sharing your experience at our museum. I am glad you enjoyed our interactive exhibits and learning about Icelandic nature. Did you know that to build the Ice Cave, we used around 400 tons of snow and ice that we had brought in from the nearest mountain range? Inside the cave, you can see the layers of volcanic ash between snow and ice. Thank you for mentioning our helpful staff. We appreciate it. I hope you had a great time exploring Icelandic treasures. All the best, Eva

This is a must see on your trip to Iceland. From top to bottom an amazing place. Allow three to four hours to experience all of it and end it with a meal or drinks at the restaurant at the top. Perfect on a rainy day or a beautiful day with terrific views from the restaurant. Just one of all the wonderful wonders of Iceland we will remember.
Dear John, Thank you for the great feedback. Yes, Perlan is not only the biggest nature museum in Iceland, but it´s also a landmark - it stands on the highest hill in Reykjavík, surrounded by trees, and our Glass Dome is visible from various parts of the city. Did you know the building was constructed around six colossal water tanks with geothermal water reserves for Reykjavík, and four are still in use? I am glad you explored our museum, visited our café, and made the most of your day. Kind regards, Eva

Seen the northern lights, luckily enough. It’s all about your phone, do your research. Enjoyed three nights, probably enough time with the kids. Be carful driving, no one indicates, we nearly got side swiped, by a car blasting through red lights, be aware. Had a steak dinner x3 in the blue lagoon £220. Great experience bit of time with my kids, loved it. Been there seen it and done it. 👊
Dear Anton, Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Visiting Iceland is a beautiful experience, and I´m glad to read that you enjoyed your time here with your family. Did you notice the scent in our Volcano show? It was made in collaboration with Fischersund Perfumery to give you a more profound experience of what it feels like to be next to an eruption site. We appreciate your visit and hope to welcome you again for more fascinating discoveries! Kind regards, Elvar

This facility is built on a hill area which was once just for tanks to store hot water from the geothermal areas around Reykjavki. It is now a museum, observation deck and educational attraction for locals and tourists. A truly unique place which offers the population a variety of educational activities. Don't miss the opportunity to visit this site when in Reykjavik.
Dear Duke, Thank you for writing to us about your day. Perlan is a landmark known for its remarkable architecture - the building is built around six colossal water tanks holding water supply for Reykjavík and four of them are still in use. The Glass Dome sits on top of them and is visible from various parts of the city. We are proud to work with well-known museum designers and artists to create memorable, fun, and educational experiences for everyone. Best regards, Eva

Great museum, awesome show on the Aurora Borealis and the volcanoes of Iceland. The exhibits regarding the natural wildlife were great with some being interactive as well and the cafe and restaurant at the top as well as the 360 degree view of Reykjavik are amazing. The cherries on top are the friendly staff, the chocolate they give after and the QR code on said chocolate wrappers which allows u to rewatch the films within the next 72 hours. Wonderful!
Dear Rishaans, Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience. I am happy to read about your adventures in exhibits, Northern Lights, and Lava Shows . Getting feedback like yours means a lot to us. We aim to provide the best experience exploring Icelandic nature in our museum. We are proud of our staff and love hearing you appreciate them. Thank you for taking the time to share your wonderful day. All the best, Eva

The museum has become one of the most iconic modern buildings in the capital. In my opinion it is worth a visit, even if only for the panoramic viewpoint. If time permits, Recommendation to attend the audiovisual show Áróra at the planetarium immediately, then stroll calmly through the other rooms to learn more about Iceland and its natural wonders.

The real attraction here is the 360 degree view from the observation deck - you can take it all of Reykjavik (and beyond) and get amazing pictures that show some of the variety of the Icelandic landscape. The ice cave is great for those who can't do a real ice cave due to cost or age - having done both, I can confirm it's a close enough substitute for the real thing to make you feel like you've experienced an iconic Icelandic outing. The Planetarium show is great if you don't have time to go chasing the Northern Lights. (But absolutely nothing is as good as finding the aurora outside!) And of course the talk is quite educational. You can easily spend half a day or more here!
Dear Shimpy, Thank you for sharing your day at Perlan. Our museum is a beautiful place to explore Icelandic wonders and learn why these natural wonders came to exist before or after heading out for adventures outside the city. In Perlan Áróra, our multi-award-winning planetarium show is the world's only northern lights experience of its kind. Guided by Aurora, the goddess of dawn, this cinematic adventure invites our visitors to join for the dance spectacle of these mystical lights over Icelandic landscapes. Did you know our Ice Cave is the first man-made ice cave in the world? We hope to see you again. Kind regards, Eva

Great value and a lot to see. Staff are very helpful and friendly. The observation deck is ideal on a clear day which we had although the wind almost swept me off my feet. Typical Iceland weather, sunshine and strong wind 😄 Walk up from downtown Reykjavik Coffee is very good!
Dear Wendy, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Yes, even if the weather is stormy, you can find exciting activities here at Perlan, from a walk through a real Ice Cave, stunning views under the Glass Dome, to our ten meters hight bird cliff, and magical Northern Lights in our Planetarium to powers of volcanoes and creatures living in Icelandic water. We hope to welcome you back to our museum. Best regards, Eva
