Wander through the narrow cobblestone alleys of this neighborhood at the foothills of the Acropolis. You'll find quaint shops selling jewelry, clothes, ceramics, and souvenirs, plus sidewalk restaurants and family-run taverns serving authentic Greek food. Being one of the oldest neighborhoods in Athens, you’ll be able to see Roman columns, medieval churches, and ancient landmarks like the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates. The area gets busy, especially during summer, so visit in the early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds. Explore Plaka and the nearby landmarks on a guided tour of Athens—it will typically include the Acropolis, Parthenon, and other ancient temples and museums. – Tripadvisor

- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada9,226 contributionsFull of Cafes and CatsThis area is very close to the Acropolis area of Athens and is considered one of the safer neighborhoods around the Acropolis from what we heard from the locals. It is full of Cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops and grocery stores. When we visited in March a lot of shops closed around 9 or 10 pm but there were some good restaurants and bars open much later. The Plaka area is surrounded by ancient Greek and Roman sights to see but inside there are less touristy stops like Athen's oldest house (Benizelos Mansion), some of the oldest churches in the city, ruins, and some museums with less foot traffic. There were lots of cats in the area as well if you're into that too. Plaka makes for a good afternoon stop as you explore the city and has some nice hotels in the area as well. The closest metro stations are Monastiraki and Syntagma.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 March 2024
- Thomas VOakland, California19,092 contributionsCharming, Food and DrinkWe had several dinners in this old neighborhood that is just below the Acropolis. It is ground zero for tourism and for entertainment, so you will find lots of places to eat and drink and some charming streets to wander. You will also find lots of souvenirs to take home.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 March 2024
- N L26 contributionsI'd stay here again. Our Airbnb was here. Lots of places to eat. Despite the graffiti, safe to walk at night. The Greeks eat much later than most Americans. Good location near museums, transportation, and historical sites.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 March 2024
- KulHKJUxbridge, United Kingdom1,626 contributionsWonderful narrow streets with colourful very old and modern buildingsThis is a very quaint part of Athens well worth exploring whilst in Athens. There are a range of small tavernas and coffee houses that are well worth visiting whilst exploring the area. People are nice and welcoming and the views are a delight. The area is safe and very easy to navigate although some parts are steep or have narrow stairwaysVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 April 2024
- Girija199Nairobi, Kenya61 contributionsInteresting and quaintthe quaint cobbled lanes of Plaka with its vibrant atmosphere and many shops selling a plethora of things from clothes to souvenirs to jewellery and the many local restaurants and rooftop coffee shops are a must visit for any tourist visiting Athens. There is a flea market in Monestriaki which is also interesting. There is no bargaining to be done in all the shops in Plaka. The shopkeepers may offer a small discount for cash payments though.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 April 2024
- JMarc SAvignon, France140 contributionsNot to be missed, pleasant area outside the tourist season. Far from the hustle and bustle of the city.Tourist but pleasant area, especially out of season. Of course a lot of shops for tourists but like in any tourist city in the world. The neighborhood is worth stopping there, quite a few things to see for those who take the time to look. Narrow streets climbing up to the Acropolis. Cafes and restaurant terraces along the stairs. At the end of March, few tourists and many Greeks enjoying the terraces and the mild weather. Staying in this area allows you to visit a large part of the city on foot.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 April 2024

- Maxine BanksSaffron Walden, United Kingdom478 contributionsFantastic part of the cityGreat part of the city to explore the small streets and numerous restaurants and bars set alongside quaint staircases that head up towards the Acropolis. Fantastic atmosphere in the evenings with lots of live music and dancing. I would highly recommend this part of the city to visitors.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 April 2024
- LynLimSingapore, Singapore31 contributionsGood to see many kinds of gifts shops & cafes all day long even in the night. Good vibes. It’s an amazing place to shop for gifts & leather sandals are great. Plaka has many cafes & bars too. Many great eateries when you are looking for some snacks or meals. Great square where people can meet & enjoy ice cream or just taking photos or selfie any time anywhere. Vibrant all day. Night is better with shops along alleyway.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 June 2024
- RonGoesan-gun, South Korea24 contributionsPLAKA AREA, SOMETHING FOR EVERYONEHands down the place to go for shopping of all kinds. Flea Market antiques to souvenirs to clothing shops. So many eateries to choose from that it can be a bit overwhelming. All cafes & restaurants have a menu out front with prices,so there are no surprises upon seating. Most eateries are pretty swamped during lunch 11am~2pm and dinner 5~10pm, so be prepared to wait a bit for the staff to get to you. Best you start of with your beverage order and a starter or two usual is bread & taziki and a greek salad. Be patient because its usually well worth the wait. Several small stone churchs, statues and memorials to see. Besides Paris & Amsterdam or Copenhagen this is also a people watchers delight.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 July 2024

- Acropolis HotelsThis ancient citadel, built in the fifth century B.C., towers over the city and is home to some of the most impressive ancient ruins, buildings, and artifacts. The most famous temple, the Parthenon, was dedicated to the goddess Athena and is considered the peak of Greek art. You can avoid long lines by joining a walking tour of the site. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen, as the walk up the hill can be steep and exposed to the sun. For the best experience, visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and for fewer crowds. – TripadvisorRead more
