Around the origin of our Catacombs much has been discussed, they were simpleburial and never were quarries or underground ways; the first note of the monumentis repeated since the death of St. Agrippino our bishop in the II century, when hisbody was buried there in a noble tomb. Many miracles the saint operated by thetomb, so it became a place of reverence and neapolitan wished to be buried in thatplace.

One day in mid-August, taking advantage of a semi-desert Naples, with my partner we decided to visit this site. We bought online tickets for the guided tour directly from the official website, at a price of 13 euros, but also including the entrance to the Catacombs of San Gaudioso in the Sanità district, with a year to visit them. Fortunately, it is not necessary to print tickets purchased online, but simply download them to your smartphone and have them validated at the ticket office. The site is accessible from Capodimonte (where the Church of Good Recommendation is located) and has an unattended parking, a bar and a meeting point where you can wait for the departure of the booked guided tour. The walk in the underground of Naples was fascinating and suggestive, the geometries of the environments and the lighting created are the real strength, in addition to the Guide's stories about Naples and the Patron Saint San Gennaro. The Guide was a very young and helpful girl, from the Sanità district, who was excited to be able to participate and contribute to the project to re-emerge the Sanità district where she was born and lives. The site is for the most part a dense lattice carved into the tuff, where you can glimpse the basilicas around which it developed and the rediscovered tomb of San Gennaro, as well as admire what remains of the frescoes and mosaics that lined the tombs of the wealthiest characters. The cool temperature in the catacombs also gave us some refreshment from the great heat of that day. It 'a walk not at all tiring that takes you into the bowels of the city of Naples!

Visited on 8 Oct 2024 One ticket covered our guided tour of the catacombs de Gerrano and the nearby Catacombe Di San Gaudioso (15 minute casual walk between the two). Timing it right we went direct from the former to latter without too much waiting time: tours tend to start on the hour or half hour. Ivan our Italian tour guide at Gerrano was excellent, he spoke in English slowly and concisely and I understood virtually every word he said and he was engaging with his knowledge and humour. Having the tour with him really made me able appreciate the history I was visiting. Would also highly recommend the Catacombe Di San Gaudioso, under the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità. Your ticket covers both so is excellent value. Whilst similar, you get to enjoy and understand the link to the church above and how the Neapolitans respected their dead so is quite a different delve into local history. Here you also get to see a special, modern, treasure of the basilica, reserved for tour guide visitors as a thank you for supporting the work of the volunteers and sponsors of the catacombs. I won't spoil the surprise, you'll need go visit yourself!

After the catacombs of San Gaudioso last month we returned with the same ticket (valid for a year) to visit these of San Gennaro and at the same time tour the Sanità district in an even more in-depth way. The catacombs (both) are extraordinarily beautiful, rich in historical and religious evidence. But all this would not be possible without the enthusiastic work (and this is felt during the tour) of the girls and boys of the cooperative la Paranza (and other cooperatives born from them) who thanks to their work are recovering (and have already recovered) an area, once very difficult, to a decidedly brighter future. They themselves make you feel part of this beautiful story by visiting the places they run. And this increases the value of the visit. Thank you.

A really fascinating place to visit, offering an engaging mix of the mythology and history of Napoli’s ancient and recent past. Antonio was a great guide with excellent English. The modern, on-site cafe also had a good selection of reasonably priced food and drinks on offer Not only a great piece of local history but also a brilliant social enterprise, challenging perceptions and bringing a hopeful spark to a little-regarded part of the city.

Today, together with my brother, sister and mother, I visited the catacombs of San Gennaro. Our guide was called Pasqualina, she was very good because she managed to capture the attention of everyone, but especially us children who were in the majority. It intrigued us so much and time has flown. I hope to find such a guide in the next visits I will make to the city. There is only one negative thing that I want to emphasize: Pasqualina is Interista😂😉😆...hope that San Gennaro will be able to convert it!!! I accompanied a group of friends from Terni, all with small children, to visit this magical place. I am Neapolitan and therefore used to the narrative and theatricality of my city, nothing can surprise me now. And instead a team of very young people amazed me, they told my Naples putting in every word passion, competence, professionalism, everything to glue adults and children in a story of about 1 hour and a half culminating in a sincere emotion, with tears that I often had to shed for disappointments returned to me from a difficult and too often forgotten city. Good guys, you are the hope of a Naples I have always wanted. Go ahead!

Yesterday’s visit to the Catacombs was a beautiful experience; the site is historically very interesting, suggestive, the impeccable organization from the reception, the cleanliness, to the care of the place. The competence and passion of Ciro, our guide, did the rest. Lots of applause to all the members of the La Paranza cooperative, a beautiful example for other initiatives that Naples would need so much.

Taking advantage of the visit to Naples during the Easter holidays, we also managed to visit this historic site. The experience was truly engaging from all points of view, made even more exciting by the young but expert guide of the La paranza cooperative, a group of young people committed to supporting and re-evaluating the neighborhood in which they live and in which they believe. Good guys!!! Keep it up

There are guided tours and visits that are an emotional journey where culture meets popular beliefs and a pinch of superstition all enriched by the passion of those who accompany us on this journey... which is also its journey of rebirth every time it descends with the visitor. A story to listen to not only with your hearing but above all with your heart at 360°. With a minimum cost you have the opportunity to see the magnificent and unique catacombs of San Gennaro and those of San Gaudioso (in addition to taking advantage of additional discounts for other cultural visits attached). Recommendation do not miss this visit together, which will take you out of there with an important Life message. Good listening, everybody.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience with Alex, our tour guide. His deep knowledge of the area’s history, combined with his engaging storytelling, brought every location to life. Alex’s passion for history was evident, and he had a way of explaining even the most complex details in a way that was both fascinating and easy to understand. He was also incredibly personable, answering all our questions with patience and enthusiasm. This tour was the highlight of our trip, and we feel so much more connected to the history and culture thanks to Alex. Highly recommend! Montenegro guys

Check out a different side of Naples—think: an extensive labyrinth of tunnels that snake underneath the entire old town. Underground Naples offers a fascinating combination of caves, galleries, and passages 131 feet below the ground. Follow the official Napoli Sottrerranea route, which will bring you to the Roman Theater and the Greek-Roman aqueduct, or join a separate tour to visit the Galleria Borbonica which used to be a tunnel intended for the then King of Naples to flee if intended. It's highly recommended to pre-book skip-the-line tickets online to avoid long lines at the entrance. – Tripadvisor

Enchanting scenery that unfolds to the eyes of visitors, a secret place full of history and magic atmosphere. An emotional journey that conducts visitors in the new section of the underground of Naples. It is situated in Vico del Grottone 4, from to 150 mt. to Plebiscito Square. Until a few years ago it wasa veterinary laboratory, now is the entrance of the Bourbon Tunnel. A staircase with 8 ramps, 33 yards deep descending into the belly of Chiaia. The second entry is in Via Domenico Morelli,40, through the crosswalk of “Quick parking”.The Tunnel was built in 1853 by Ferdinand II of Bourbon, who, concerned about the outbreak of rebellion, he asked for an escape from the Royal Palace to the barrack in Via della Pace, now Via Morelli. The work was uncompleted and, during the second World War, was used by residents of the area as a military hospital, later becoming the Hall Judicial Deposit. The war left its mark even in the subsoil. That’s way there are handwrite, folding beds, messages of wish and desolation of those who lived it and still maintains its memory. Along the tunnel thereare also the evidences, 530 meters, where visitors can discover the history of real life. Through the spacious streets, it’s easy reachable the network of tunnels and cisterns of seventeenth-century,large buildings, where worked the "pozzari", the only connoisseur of Naples underground. The show is stunning, but that's not finished. On Via Morelli appear statues dating back to fascist period and many cars and motorcycles, abandoned for years, freed from piles of rubbish, arranged and illuminated ad hoc for the route.Nothing is left to chance, even lighting, perfectly integrated with the path of the visitors.Since today everything is possible to visit. Five years ago the scenery was completely different.Rubbish, degradation, wastes of all kinds covered the reliquaries.

  • Teatro di San Carlo Hotels
The Teatro di San Carlo was designed by the architects Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Angelo Carasale for the monarch since Charles wanted a new and larger theatre for Naples to replace the old and dilapidated Teatro San Bartolomeo of 1621. On 12 February 1816 the San Carlo was destroyed by fire. The Theatre was re-designed by the architect Antonio Niccolini and rebuilt within ten months on order of King Ferdinand IV. In 1845 there was additional refurbishment and, by 1854, the theatre's interior appearance changed to the now-traditional red and gold. Now carefully restored to its former splendour, the San Carlo is the oldest working theatre in Europe.
