If there’s a "beach economy," Buzios is its Wall Street. Its more than 20 beaches, world-class galleries, clubs and boutiques draw an elite set of travellers. Surfers love Geriba Beach, snorkelers enjoy Ferruda, hip Ossos Beach offers upscale beachside cafes and laid-back Ilhabela Beach offers a more down-to-earth Buzios experience.

Santiago de Leon de Caracas, Venezuela's capital, sits in Cerro Avila Valley, where mountain ranges soar 8000 feet from the Caribbean. The city was founded by the Spanish in 1567, on a site once inhabited by Toromaimo Indians. Chacao is the see-and-be-seen place to eat, drink and socialise, but restaurant destination Las Mercedes is one of the few places safe to walk around. Iglesia de San Francisco is a beautiful example of colonial architecture. Mountainous Parque Nacional El Avila teems with tempting trails.

Toluca is famous for Los Portales, a monumental set of arches completed in the 19th century. It is also known for its cathedral, which is an excellent architectural representation of the Neo-Classical style.

The City of Fernandina Beach is located on beautiful Amelia Island off the Atlantic coast of Florida. Play a round of golf on one of the champion golf courses, or take a tour of the historical sites on the island. Visit the Artrageous Artwalk. The galleries are opened from 5:30pm until 8:30pm the second Saturday of every month. Find pottery, stained glass, local crafts shown alongside fine art, watercolors, and intriguing photography.

A rolling mesa at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos has a magical quality. Its rugged beauty, majestic mountains, wild Rio Grande river and unique blend of cultures - Spanish, Native American and Anglo - have historically drawn artists and photographers, evidenced by the plentiful galleries, museums and festivals. To experience the Native American culture here, explore Taos Pueblo, where the Tiwa Native Americans have practiced their traditions for centuries. Finally, the Anglo influence is prevalent in the business district, with its shops, art galleries and some of the finest restaurants in New Mexico. Skiing is also a major draw, but the challenging slopes are geared to the more advanced crowd. There's no rat race here; a fair share of non-mainstreamers have made this laid-back, low-key mecca their home. You, too, may not want to leave its tranquility and natural beauty.
