Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I stayed here over three successive weekends in July 2020 for some work projects. I was really happy with the experience, and if I ever needed to stay again for a personal trip, I'd happily revisit.
The first two stays were in rooms within the main building (the one where the reception is). The front desk staff are friendly and helpful. Each room was warm (thanks to an excellent heatpump) and had great facilities like SkyTV, a comfy bed with plenty of blankets and pillows, and all the regular bathroom facilities you'd expect.
The third stay was in the block at the rear of the property, and it turns out these are the much nicer (and larger) rooms. I also found that there was less sound leaking between rooms when in this rear block, and the shower was a lot better too.
One of the best features was walking distance to two great restaurants. Although, some people may find the noise of the pub nearby to be slightly noisy sometimes, but it didn't mind me at all. The woodfired pizzes next door are amazing, and it's literately just a walk across the driveway.

Travelling with a person in a wheelchair was made easy with a full open bathroom (Just a shower curtain) so a shower chair can be moved around. The adjoining room also was helpful. The both cleaning and reception staff were helpful. Staff had the equipment we had hired to make the stay possible waiting in our room. Definitely stay again.

Stayed here for three nights with an associate for a conference. We both snore so the beds upstairs on the mezzanine floor was pure brilliance! Apart from that the motel is situated across from the railway station and the racecourse! Staff very friendly and the rooms very clean. Dined at the Tote bar next door for good pub meals. Will definitely stay here again if back in the area.

We stayed there the first night and were quite happy with the accomodation and a restaurant available attached to the same building. That was great as we came from Taranaki and wanted to catch up over a meal with friends. The room was good and the staff very accomodating. So we choose to stay there on our return trip from the south island and booked in - not a problem. We arrived on that evening at 18.40pm and asked if the restaurant would still be available. (We understand that the hotel and restaurant are run by different owners)
We were told that should not be a problem- we asked because it was Valentines Day and knew that it could have booked out. So we unpacked the car and had a very quick shower ( which resembled a fire hose) and went straight to the restaurant. By then it was 5 minutes past 19pm. We asked for a table for 2 and were told that the kitchen had closed at 19pm....the person in charge did not even bother to ask the kitchen.....even though there were customers sitting and still looking at the menu to order. Not impressed at all we left and had to take the car for a drive around to find a place to eat.
We will definetly not back as the second stay was also spoiled by having a room not as well appointed as at the first stay and it was very noisy from early on in the morning. The staff there was lovely though.

Stayed for 3 nights the reception staff were lovely and helpful.
Room had a lot of space which was good to put our newborns play-mat and bouncer. There was also a nice comfy sofa for feeding our baby.
Big shower with amazing pressure!

Handy to have the train across the road that heads straight into wellington and two pubs that sell delicious food a dairy and cafes close by.

Stayed here for a Saturday night with a group from work. Easy check in and excellent room. Nice and clean. Great size with comfortable furnishings. Nice setting with courtyard. Plenty of parking.

The Totara lodge would get a top rating if not for the late night loud music from the front bar. It woke up most of our group. Ruined a great night.

I would happily stay here again but only on a quiet night.

Awesome rooms, quiet, beds comfy. Would have liked a small stove top to cook own basic meals. Staff are friendly and facilities are good. There is a bottle stor, dairy, two resturants, a bar and the train station withing 100 metres

Located in a small city, Upper Hutt. We stayed here for a night to play golf at Royal Wellington next morning.

Receptionist was super nice and friendly; the room was very clean and neat for a family of four. They have two stories with a queen and a single on the second floor and a single on the first floor.

They have electronic burners, microwave, utensiles, and etc. Wifi is not the best quality, but still doable. Everything went smoothly and I would recommend to stay here if you are happened to be in Upper Hutt.

They offer room services, on site restraunts, and optional breakfasts.
Parking and internet are complimentary.

Would love to come back!

I would have given a good review BUT. The location was good and the room was perfect for us travelling with a baby, we paid extra for a cot and toys, we did note the ladies behind the counter were a bit cold but whatever. As we checked out the surly ladies behind the counter slapped a $65 "professional cleaner" fee on us over a few spots of baby food on the carpet. First a bit of water would have removed the stain, secondly I don't for a moment believe they will get "professional cleaners", they will pocket the money and get there clearer to remove the spots, a job that will take 3 minutes. Completely ruined the stay for us and we won't be going back.
