A remote, 1960's Kiwi-style small lodge located on a perfect, white sandy beach with an orientation toward fishing. Reasonably clean, with friendly staff. What is lacking in style and amenities is mostly compensated by location, but could use modernizing (no in-room phones, no internet, limited TV etc.)

Motels like Reef Lodge maybe not everyone's ideal choice but for my wife and I, it was just what we were after, a room only a short walk from the beach and with water views. The moment we arrived, we just enjoyed ourselves in a very relaxing setting. Sure the room are a bit dated but this is more than compensated by the location. Both keen fishermen, we didn't take long to grab our surfcasters, hop over onto the beach and get our lines in the water and soak in the scenery. Wasn't long before we had 4 kahawai and another one later on!. We jumped into the spa afterwards and no complaints here. Certainly warm enough for us.
Back to the room: the double bed made for a good night's rest, no traffic noise here, just the odd wave lapping the beach. Shower toilet area a bit cramped but functional. One tip: take bottle water with you if you want to enjoy a good cuppa. We found the tap water a bit too "tasty". TV has all the Freeview channels. Would we go back again, absolutely!

The location is perfect (20 metres from the beach) the beach itself being powder white sand with azure water. It is a 10 minute stroll along the beach to the main settlement. The rooms are basic but have everything you need and are spacious. The price for the room itself is quite expensive but I guess what you really pay for is the view and location which is worth every penny.

The location of this motel is outstanding, clear blue water and amazing views across the harbour. We have have spent many holidays there when the Children were younger. That was probably 17-18 years ago and unfortunately the standard of the motel has slipped quite a lot. At the present time the Hosts are not very friendly and the room was inadequate in that the place was dirty and the whole place is tired. Investment is sadly required to make the units more comfortable. The bedding smelled like it needed to be washed. The towels smelled the same as the bedding, no hand soap. No extra blankets or heating of any kind. Dead bugs aside the microwave and to top it all off a fully baited mouse trap next to the kitchen bench. The grounds were unkempt with weeds growing in the gardens. We were booked for three nights but left after one.
It is a shame, it could be paradise once again with some TLC and people that care about customer service taking charge.

Sadly lacking in the key areas of cell phone coverage and value for money. The units are decidedly dated and unappealing. The outdoor spa is sub-standard. How a motel that advertises that they have a spa pool yet fails to inform you that it is luke warm and inoperable defies belief. Either the operators do not care about their customers or are sadly negligent in their duties. I see that another reviewer has mentioned this deficiency therefore they must be aware of this and have not rectified it. This speaks volumes about a motel that is truly not up to scratch yet charges high rates.

Had the bestest Time with my family at this lodge, even though we only stayed there for a night the operators Karen and dick was super kind and flexible with our checkout... For five people it was a really resonable stay... Don't forget the superb view. Will sure go back again for a longer period

Awesome location (we have stayed here previously when managers were running the place, they were brilliant - January 2016) but this time we stayed for four nights January 2018 and were told there would be no room service, quite shocked, weren't offered milk, no top ups for tea or coffee, had to take our towels each day to get them replaced and had to remove our own rubbish. A plastic container in the kitchen had mold growing in it. Beds were terrible and need replacing. The owners were there this time, feel they didn't have a clue how to run the place. The BBQ's needed to be cleaned as were very dirty. Also no WiFi unless you paid for it.

The location itself is paradisical. It is quiet and remote, exactly what we'd hoped for.

A safe gorgeous beach far from anything, and made for long walks and bracing sunrise swims!

Unfortunately the $215 we paid for 2 people is at least $50 over the going rate for motels of this quality - torn wallpaper and basic 1970s units do not justify that price. We were quite happy with the room as a basic room is all we wanted - but the price has to make sense, too.

There are very few food options nearby - we wished we'd taken groceries in and made dinner ourselves at least one night.

Although it is beautifully situated, we felt this was very overpriced. The units were dated and basic - not necessarily a problem but needs to be priced accordingly! There was no sky tv so my husband was very upset to miss the rugby. The spa was lukewarm. The unit smelled musty. May be ok if you are into fishing but not a place for us. The lady looking after the complex for the owners was very helpful.

Reef lodge is an excellent place to relax far away from the busy world. Just a few steps from the beach you can go for a swim in the clear water or go for fishing at this magnificant spot. Very kind hosts, very helpful and considerate. They offered us some sausages from their own freezer to have something for dinner, when we arrived on a late afternoon without adequate food. Reef Lodge Motel is a good base to discover the rest of Karikari Peninisula, of which Matai bay is highly recommended.
