Detailed Reviews
This campground is nice and quiet and is fairly conveniently located only a couple km from downtown Alex’. Other than others reports about how rude the hosts were (I didn’t interact with them directly so cannot comment on that), there isn’t really anything badly wrong with the place, but it’s just not that good either. The place is getting a little tired looking and really needs modernizing if it is to keep up with trends elsewhere. For example the Top 10 holiday park in Oamaru is marginally cheaper per night, but is so much nicer, more modern, better maintained and has much more facilities etc than this campground. Having said that, looks are deceiving sometimes and while the shower/toilet block looks like something you’d find at a military base or prison, it’s actually not that bad and is heated during cold weather. The kids playground is very basic and a little tired, and the kitchen is pretty basic but functional (I did note the electrical safety testing tags had expired though). All in all, it was an OK place, but could be a lot better if the owners reinvested some of the takings. As for the rudeness of the owners that others report, they really need to pull their head in because all of my comments about the above could relatively easily be offset by some above-average hospitality from the hosts. But poor service and mediocre amenities aren’t a great combination.

My partner and I have stayed at this holiday park for almost a month now and so I can write this with real experience of this camp site.
It’s my honest opinion that if you want to go away on holiday and have a nice time, this holiday park is NOT the place to do it. It’s fair to say that the facilities are average: very dated; concrete floor bathrooms; in need of a lick of paint; hot plates that barely work in the kitchen; no decent sized ovens to cook with etc. They do have Sky TV however, in their little lounge and a few washing machines and expensive Wifi.
Unfortunately, what really let’s this place down is the people who run the holiday park. The owners and management are not warm or welcoming at all. Why are the owners and management like this? We found out at the end of our stay...
On the first day we weren’t even shown where all the facilities were on arrival. The only thing the female owner did say was that it was the cleanest holiday park in the area. This turned out to be false information as I noticed the same used plaster on the floor in the shower cubicle four days running and my partner had a similar experience.
On the second day, the cleaners –who were also very miserable and hostile towards us throughout our stay – blamed my partner and I for making a mess with chicken noodles in the kitchen. It didn’t matter that I told her that “we are vegetarians and hadn’t cooked in the kitchen yet”, she had it in for us.
All the way through our month here we were treated VERY rudely by the owners and cleaners of the park and we couldn’t work out why. I asked around guests at the campsite and they told me that the owners always run hot and cold and can be very rude to most people.
When people are rude to you from the word go, you have to assume there is some prejudice in their minds when they make their initial judgements about you.
Everything became clear when I went to the owners on our last day to ask if we could go away travelling for a couple of weeks and come back and use up the extra days that we have paid for when we come back. The owners flatly refused and said that they won’t do it because we are “messy”. This came as a shock as we take pride in cleaning up after ourselves wherever we go. The owner said we "leave a mess in the kitchen", which we never have, and that we had litter around our tent. The litter around our tent was a small jewellery box and a wrapper that fell out when the owners told us to move our tent to another spot, which we hadn't seen. I had to ask the owner “why he was being so hostile towards us when we just keep ourselves to ourselves, are tidy and get along with other guests?” All he could say was that we were messy, and I said to him that he cannot base this on a couple of pieces of litter which we did not see. He ended up swearing a lot and then marched me to a rubbish bin where he pulled out the pieces of litter and said “there!” I couldn’t believe that these two pieces of litter were the problem, so I asked him why he would be so nasty to us for the whole time we had been there when this litter was found only the day before. That’s when he made it very clear, in not so pleasant words, that he doesn’t like British people.
So, it would appear that the reason the cleaners and the owners were so hostile towards us wasn’t because we were untidy – which was lies anyway – it was because they dislike English people. Other Kiwi guests also talk about rudeness towards them from the owners, so it just seems that they are not people’s people.

This worn down and outdated camp ground is really not a nice place to stay! Amenities are old and outdated, although they do have a fresh coat of paint. A classic example of owners who think they can rip off their customers by litterally letting them camp on a huge piece of land, and do nothing to make their stay a good one. Surprisingly there are many regular campers here. They must be used to bad service and amenities that were modern 100 years ago! One of the worst in New Zealand!

A lovely park on the edge of central Alexandra. The park is big so you arent crammed in and it has all the amenities you need.
The shower and toilet block is a little old but you get nice warm showers with big cubicles and no time limit.
The staff were also very helpful and friendly and gave us plenty of advice about where best to ride the bikes we were hiring.
Would easily recommend.

We stayed 5 nights in a self contained caboose cabin. The cabin was clean and warm but we were concerned at the lack of soap and hand towel during covid times.
After a couple of days I asked Janice, camp manager/owner if we could have some more teabags. The answer was an abrupt no, you only get one nights supply and you are not paying motel prices.
Interestingly we stayed, on our way home, at a fully serviced motel in Christchurch and paid exactly the same nightly rate!
Some attention to customer service is badly needed, we would not stay again under current management

For $50 a night I had my own little cabin which I thought was great value for money! When my cycle tour fell over these guys were amazing, found me an e bike to use and took me well onto the trail for just the cost of the petrol. Not super flash but a down to earth, clean, tidy economic, family oriented place to stay with staff willing to go the extra mile to make sure you have a great holiday. Great location too. Highly recommend. Thanks guys!

Despite poor reviews on this website , we decided to see for ourselves . The desk lady was awesome, so friendly and helpful. We had the pick of the sites. The showers were on 6 minute timers with plenty of hot water and time to get a good shower after a day biking. Bikes trails really close by!! There was a problem with Alexandra water, and there was plenty of signage round the camp to alert us to this. We will fully recommend this place to others

Stayed here with my friend and our children for 4 nights in the 2 bedroom cabin. When we needed anything from reception Janice was beyond rude and disinterested in helping us. One night we got back from a day trip at the lake to find ourselves locked out of our bathroom so my friend went to the reception to ask for help getting in while I watched the kids (we needed to give our kids a shower before bed). Janice told her to wait half an hour because her husband was sleeping so we had to wait for her husband to wake up and help us. They never came around and had forgotten about us so we grabbed the kids and all of us went to reception this was an hour later and her husband had just woken up and he helped us but this is just shocking us having to wait to put our children to bed so your husband can bloody sleep?! We are paying to be here its totally disgusting the way you treated us. And my friend asked for some change so she could buy something at the campground shop and Janice said to her "we are not a bank". Eventually we dreaded going to the reception to ask for any help because we didnt know what she was going to be like next.Janice is the rudest person I have ever met in my entire life. This place needs new owners because no one will put up with this behaviour. Do not recommend. Dont waste your money and time coming to this campground.

Have been coming to Alexandra holiday park for over 20 years. Now our adult children, partners and grandchildren all come each year as well. We have always enjoyed the family friendly vibe that comes with the park. In the past three years they have a new manager (Marty) to assist the owners. With this has come loads of new activities for the children who really love Marty as he is extremely helpful and caring to all. We not only enjoy the wonderful summer weather but also enjoy seeing many of the same campers like us year after year. We will continue to come each year at Christmas and the odd weekend throughout the year for as long as we are able. I would recommend this to any family looking for a good kiwi family holiday.

Found the owners extremely difficult to deal with and extremely rude. Seemed disinterested in helping any of the guests. Charged for 5 nights when we only stayed for three, as we tried to discuss why the bill was so expensive Janis one of the owners threatened to call the cops. Was totally unreasonable towards any other guests that we saw her deal with at reception. Would definitely not recommend, be better of going to clyde camping ground 15 mins away.
