So much more than the world's first salt hotel: we are Palacio de Sal. On the shores of the majestic Salar de Uyuni -under an astonishing sky full of magnificent colours and stars- stands, bursting with historical significance, the Palacio de Sal (The Salt Palace). A haven of magical moments where every end of the day is the evidence of an irrefutable fact: no dream, however extraordinary it may seem, is ever diluted before it comes true.

We stayed at the Palacio de Sal on the 10th December and it was an experience to forget. What happened since check in has to be reported because I don’t understand how this kind of hotel management keeps a 5 star rating. While we haven’t even completed the check in, we were already told we had to pay 2 times in that moment like we would leave without paying. I know this might be hotel policy but that’s not the way to handle it on a 5 star rated hotel. The bedroom had no hot water until we had to call someone to fix it, the bathroom toilet had to be flushed with the help of the teapot because it didn’t flush enough water. The bathroom toilet seat doesn’t stay up apparently too. But the worst was the temperature, while we’re in summer we arrived at the room only to finding it scorching hot. We obviously reported it to the reception before we left to dinner and they’ve said they would put a fan on the room to try and refresh it. While we were seated down to have our dinner at the bar, a group of young people charged in, literally took over the bar while the waiters looked helplessly and we were forced out of the are because both the music was too lout for the waiter on the other side of the bar to understand us but also because they started dancing everywhere, shouting, filming, etc. We asked for the manager to report this and we had to wait 45minutes for someone to show up even we called for it 3 times during this 45minutes of waiting. When the manager finally showed up all she had to say was “I’m sorry I didn’t know this was going to happen” while proceeding to doing absolutely nothing. Finally, when we’ve arrived to the room we found out no fan was there and the room was still hot. The only option we had was to sleep with the window open in order to try and refresh the room. Sleeping with the noise of a fan definitely wasn’t on our plans. But it gets worse, the windows of the room let all the sun in meaning at 5am it was day in our room without an option to keep it darker for us to continue to sleep. During check out we made sure we’ve talked to the manager (which, again, took his time) and expressed our feelings about our stay. We were told they look into it and would reach out later to discuss what happened and how we could be, in a way, compensated by all of this. A month has passed and no one reached out. Conclusion, I don’t know how a hotel with this conditions and service keeps a 5 star rating. This has been, by far, my worst experience in a so called luxury hotel. Thank you for your time, Diogo Neuparth

Hotel's Favourite
Palacio de Sal is one of the unique hotels in the world, and definitely worth a stay. The building is constructed with salt blocks, and the rooms have salt block 'domes' over the beds and sitting areas. They even drip a few drops of salt onto the bed (near your feet), which some people may find annoying, but we found was part of the amazing character of the experience. The rooms were spacious and the beds were comfortable. Heat was radiator heat, so the rooms weren't super warm, but the beds were equipped with electric blankets. That said, the hotel is not quite up to 5-star standards. One of our rooms had only two bath towels at check-in, no bath mat towel for the floor, no wash cloths, no hand towels. On our second day, they hadn't served our room by 1:30, so I called to the front desk and, to their credit, they had a crew there in 5 minutes. Walls, as others have mentioned, are very thin, and you can clearly hear conversations of next door neighbors. The spa won't take advanced reservations, yet there is limited staff there, and so you have to show up early to be sure you get the treatments you may want. And the spa staff is weirdly committed to rules that make no sense. You can only stay at the pool for just one, 1 hour session per day. But when we showed up to the pool after breakfast and it was totally empty (zero people), we had to argue our way into being allowed in, despite our afternoon reservation. That said, the massage, facial and spa treatments are quite good and very inexpensive compared to regular western standards. Food is good, but not 'blow me away' amazing. Breakfast bar is ok, but due to Covid, is all served by a person behind the counter, so there can be a line and it can be quite slow to get your food. I get that they did that, but then they had self-serve bread and a toast machine. Why have self-serve breads and then no self-serve buffet?? They have an "omelet" station, but then there are very limited fillings (no onions, no mushrooms, no tomato). We had lunch in the bar one day. The food was quite good, though a bit skimpy in quantity (like an embarrassingly small amount of french fries), but reasonably priced for hotel food, though expensive by Bolivian standards. The buffet dinner was the single most expensive meal we had over 2 weeks in Bolivia. It was far, far from the best meal we had. But it was quite good, and the carved beef tenderloin was excellent, and still reasonably priced by Western standards. Still, there are way better options in Uyuni that are cheaper even with a 300BOB round trip taxi fare. Nobody in the dining room speaks a word of English. Nor do the doorman/bellmen. I realize this is a Spanish speaking country, and we got by just fine with that. But at a true 5-star hotels, the customer facing staff typically do have some English: doubly so at hotels that serve a significant %age of Western clients, as this one does. I asked if they could print my boarding passes, and they asked me to forward by email and they did print them. But then they surprised me with a charge on my bill. So there's your 5-star experience right there. Every other cheaper hotel prints a few pages for free. The did offer a free "shuttle" to the airport, which was a guy with an SUV, but it got us there on time and had seat belts for everyone, which is not guaranteed at all in Bolivia. Overall, a great, fun and interesting hotel. It's a solid four star (Sheraton/Marriott) type of experience, with mostly solid service and amenities, but lacking most of the extra premium touches of a really high-end hotel (Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons). Still, a great value by western price standards and about as good as you'll get anywhere in Bolivia.

The rooms we rented had no windows and no ventilation. There was no fresh air whatsoever coming into the room. Dinner was terrible with not enough variety. Same as for breakfast. Spa offers very limited treatments. There was not a place to sit outside to watch the sunset of the salt flats. Although there is not enough luxury hotel variety in the area, I would give it a shot to try other places and not the PALACIO.

The hotel is lovely. The staff are gracious and helpful. The dinner and breakfast, buffet style, have excellent food. We had a lovely welcome drink on arrival and the decor is very cool. The room was spacious but uncomfortable for a couple reasons. 1. The room was HOT and stayed hot all night. We opened our window and it was still blazingly hot in there. And for context, I am an "always cold" kind of person--my own home is kept at 72 F (22.2 C) and I still wear a big bathrobe and slippers. 2. The bed was TINY. It's a small double bed that is small in all dimensions (my spouse is 5'8" --1.72m-- and his feet hung off the bed). We couldn't really both sleep in it comfortably and we are used to a Queen size bed at home (not even a King). Would have vastly preferred a room with two beds to trying to make it through the night totally unable to move. I enjoyed the stay, although the pool and sauna were closed for maintenance, which was disappointing.

This is a very original hotel made of salt , next to Salario del Sal. Rooms are decent, though a little outdated. as were the bathrooms. We had the dinner buffet there for 28$/ person and the food was very good. We were pleasantly surprised by Carlos, the restaurant manager who sent us a complimentary bottle of Bolivian wine. The SPA wasn’t crowded when we were there and I had a facial for 48$, that was excellent. The staff is what makes this hotel an excellent choice if you want to visit the Solar. Everybody was pleasant, helpful, smiling and genuinely kind. Not enough words to tell what a difference that made. From Xavier at the reception, Rodrigo the waiter , Carlos, they provided excellent service.
