It’s adequate for a short stay to hike the Tongariro. Definitely a backpackers type of place. Nice that they have a kitchen to use. There are couple of restaurants in walking distance and it’s also in walking distance to the train station. Dated and could be a little cleaner. The person working there (owner?) was very nice. Wish they had a hair dryer in the bathroom.
We stayed in Pukenui Lodge just one night before experiencing Tongariro Alpine Crossing. We had a basic but very warm room. The parking was spacious. The owner is actually a record-holder in speed skiing! Thanks again for a warm welcome, Chris!
A few years back we were booked into a neighbouring motel and left immediately after we'd seen the room. So it was with some reservations that we booked this lodge to be close to our family who were staying at the YHA next door. This was the only place with an ensuite room available which was important given we are 2 oldies. To our surprise, although it was basic as expected, it was perfectly good for a few nights. The room was clean and tidy and warm. The kitchen was clean and tidy and well equipped. The lounge had a lovely log fire, comfortable armchairs and great views. The staff were helpful and all very friendly. Theres a bar right next door that does huge portions of good food and beer at reasonable prices. Would certainly book here again.
For some reason we booked through Booking.com and they totally screwed up the booking. We arrived after they had confirmed all was OK to find that Booking.com had double booked the room. There were in fact no rooms left of the type we booked. Pukenui Lodge staff were wonderful and found us an adequate room and upgraded us for the following night. It is a nice backpacker type place with good facilities and great staff. Nice family atmosphere. Would recommend without hesitation. But - don't use Booking.com!
