Awesome and friendly staff, a wood fireplace free to use at any time, and a huge rec room with all you could ask for in a public space. Board games, pool table, books, tv, puzzles, and that fireplace! Super cosy spot and was glad to spend a couple of nights here when it was pouring rain outside. No free tea and coffee though, unfortunately. The kitchen is also a bit institutional, but it's way better to hang out in the lounge anyway!
I liked it. It had a bit of character and it did the trick. Very cheap and practical. The girl who works and the reception and basically you see working around the hostel all the time, is fab. Very friendly and happy to help. Free pool is an awesome bonus. Bad WiFi is the only con.
I choose here for our two nights while doing the Tongariro Crossing. It was perfect. It is a hostel. Clean, good kitchen and we had our own room. It cost NZ$68 per night. It is a lot cheaper if you share one of the bunk rooms. The hostel also organised transport to and from the crossing for a cost of NZ$30 each. The transport was on time and gave us 8Hrs to do the walk. The hostel was also not busy unlike the YH which was packed and where we picked up 20 people on the bus for the crossing. My only niggle was having to pay for wifi.
We enjoyed our stay at Ski Haus. It was the right place to stay for Tongariro Crossing! They really cared about us and gave us all information we needed for Tongariro Crossing and updated us regularly about the weather conditions and if the track was passable. Nice and clean facilities, big kitchen. Hot showers and warm rooms except for the living room. Bad Wifi signal. 4 Square supermarket and bus stops (Nakedbus, Intercity) nearby.
Absolutely fine little hostel with some great facilities. Slept in a six bed dorm and was very comfortable, though could use some shelving for the top bunks to store water/alarm as beds are slatted so fall through easily! Staff were very pleasant and helpful, although reception does open a little late so if you're wanting help before a long day walk, just remember to ask the night before! Facilities were very nice and clean, plenty of bathrooms/showers available, good communal area and lots of space. Internet reception was fine for me, though I imagine it doesn't stretch to all the rooms and cost was a bit expensive but not horrifically so! Kitchen was clean but looks like few people use it, not the best selection of implements etc. but perfectly adequate for most backpacker…
