Detailed Reviews
We stayed in the Pipiriki Suite (one queen bed and one single bed). It is fairly roomy. The beds were comfortable. (I always bring my own pillow on trips, so I can't really report on that.) We shared a kitchen with one other suite. The kitchen had a full-size fridge. There is self service laundry on the property, but we did not need to use it. Everything was clean. Everything was also quiet at night because the place is on a side road, not the highway. The shower seemed to have a "conservation flow," but there was plenty of hot water. WiFi was reasonably good. The place was very "homey" with pretty flowers outside. There is also a cat named Pirate who sometimes hangs around the outdoor bar/sitting area. The hosts were super nice. Louis knew the area well and gave us good advice on hiking. We paid the extra for a cooked breakfast each morning and it was fabulous. I preferred the vegetarian breakfast over the regular breakfast even though I am not a vegetarian. The homemade bread was excellent. We paid for packed lunches for our one long day of hiking. One can walk to the town's restaurants from the lodge, which we did for our suppers. There is a small store in town with a surprising number of grocery items. I would definitely recommend this accommodation!

Thank you so much for staying with us, Brenda, and for taking time to put together such a great review, we really appreciate it! We are delighted to hear that you felt comfortable and welcome while staying with us. Our breakfast is indeed a hit with the fresh ingredients, healthy options and, of course, our homemade bread :) It it great to know that you also enjoyed the area and the facilities available in the village, they do make your stay so much more convenient, doesn't it? Thank you once again and we hope to see you back here in Tongariro again soon. Kind regards, Marina and Louis

We had a lovely time at the lodge while staying 2 days at National Park to do the Tongariro crossing.
From the start Louis was very quick to reply to my many emails and let me know about the Lodge’s crossing package.
We decided to book with Louis as the well priced package included two nights accomodation, two breakfasts, one continental and one cooked, packed lunches and snacks for the walk and also a celebratory tipple after the walk . It also included return shuttles to the start and end of the walk with summit shuttles.
To be fair, the accomodation is not modern if that is what you are after. It definitely has a rustic nostalgic vibe and I loved the old fashioned side cabinets and retro cups and saucers. Everything was also clean and tidy.
Louis was very friendly but not intrusive. He gave us a few ideas of places to eat and a few places of interest we might like to see before our walk.
We received our brekkie and lunches the night before the walk . Choices of cereal, boiled eggs, condiments and homemade bread, Yoghurt and juice was a good start to the day and our lunches included a sandwich, small bag of scroggin, apple, muesli bar and a peanut slab..what more could you ask for!
We rocked up after the walk and he organised a lovely Pinot gris and beer for us to have in the sun while enjoying the company of Pirate the cat.
We had a nice freshly cooked breakfast the next day in front of the sunny window and as the only couple having breakfast at that time we had really personal service which we loved. Louis is such a jack of all trades manning the reception and organising all the food as well!
We’d like to say thanks for the lovely stay and we wish Louis and his family all the best for a great holiday season!

The lodge has ratings of 9.3 and 9.8 and well deserved too. The place is immaculately maintained, both on the inside and out, including the grounds. Really thoughtful touches inside the room, we were at the Whanganui Suite. Has it's own kitchen, so you can do your breakfast yourself, especially good on the day you're doing the crossing. Marina & Louis are the perfect hosts, very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The breakfast they did for us on the day after the crossing - well real classy, haven't had this good a brekkie even at 7 star hotels I've been at. 9.9 for me.

Bent over backwards to make our stay as great as it could be given we were unlucky with the weather!
We loved our 4-night stay at Tongariro Crossing Lodge! We were made to feel welcome right from the moment we were picked up at the train station. We stayed in the Pipiriki Suite, and enjoyed having access to a kitchen, as well as a room big enough for the whole family (3 of us). The buildings are older but well maintained and very charming. There are lovely views from the front porch when the weather is clear. We also enjoyed the Lodge breakfast a couple of mornings, which was delicious (and had plenty of gluten free options). The location was fantastic, with restaurants and a small supermarket within walking distance. Unfortunately the weather was awful and our Alpine Crossing tour was cancelled, but Louis and Marina did their best to make our stay enjoyable anyway. They recommended walks to do during breaks in the weather (including arranging a shuttle to Whakapapa), provided us with board games when the rain set in, and even loaned us their personal car one day. We also used the free laundry and drying room to catch up on our washing mid-trip. We were leaving on an afternoon train so they gave us a free late checkout, drove us to the station, and when we discovered the train was delayed they drove us back to the lodge to wait in comfort (and even provided snacks!). We look forward to staying here again when we come back again to tackle the Alpine Crossing (weather permitting)!

I'd driven past the sign a few times, very cool to see a new bar in National Park Village, had never had the time to stop in. I stopped on impulse this afternoon, just to check it out...
What a lovely location, literally a bar in a garden, and actually very nice and old worldy for that garden to be more exotic than native, right down to the little figures playing cricket on the lawn.
The bar has a good selection of Kiwi craft beers and wines and it was quite relaxing to sip back with my stout and listen to the birdsong and watch clouds scud across the sky.
I had a great conversation with my hosts, Louis and Marina, and met Pirate who's the boss...
If you're looking for somewhere in National Park Village for just a quiet drink, maybe with that someone special, then the Garden Bar is the place to be...

We stayed here during a hiking trip and loved it. The rooms are cozy, and the dining room has good light. The breakfasts and packed lunch were all great.
(Including yummy homemade bread) The owner was very nice and helpful. We purchased the Tongariro crossing package (which included the shuttle and packed lunch), and were very glad we did. There is a vegetarian option for breakfast and lunch.

We really enjoyed our stay at Tongariro Crossing Lodge and the Turoa self-catering unit felt like our home away from home! The unit had everything we needed, it was clean, cozy and warm. The location is also perfect for visiting the Whakapapa ski resort. The hosts were really friendly and helpful. Close to the lodge there is also a big playground (walking distance) that our daughter loved!
We will definitely return to this lodge!

We stayed two nights and highly recommend the Lodge. Great to stay in a property with such character and which is obviously well loved, maintained and cared for. Great kitchen facilities that we shared with another unit although we only used it for toast / sandwiches. Only minor quibble is that while the room heats quickly, electric blankets would be a fabulous addition. Louis was super-helpful with our questions and very responsive throughout.

This was an old style villa but was still very very warm. Everything was in keeping with the old villa style but very functional. Very clean and well appointed. Bed was very comfortable and electric blanket lovely. Kitchen was shared with one other room but had everything we needed. Smart TV was faulty but owners were quickly on the case and put it right. Outstanding service. Heating was great and we felt so warm the whole time. Well located with a short walk to main road and bars. Lovely place to stay. Will definitely stay there again.

Hi John & Erma,
We can confirm your reservation for those dates.
We can help you arrange return transport for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on the Saturday and will be able to confirm the times and details on check in.
The shuttle for the hike will collect you from the lodge and return you back here from the end. The cost is NZ$40/person for the return trip. There are several pickup times from here and the end, and we can discuss which works best for you on the day when you arrive.
If you have any other queries, feel free to call us on +64 7 892 2688.
We look forward to welcoming you next month.
Regards,

Tongariro Crossing Lodge (GPS Co-ordinates, S 39.17177 E 175.39840) from Auckland.
Auckland SH1 > Ngaruawahia then right after BP following signs to Otorohanga via SH39 > Once in Otorohanga take right turn on to SH3 Heading for Te Kuiti > about 15 kms out of Te Kuiti take left on SH4 , will be sign posted for Taumaranui and National Park, it comes up very quickly after a right hand corner, so could be easily missed, if chatting.
National Park Village is around 30 minutes from Taumarunui. When you get to the village take the very first road on your right, This is Carroll St and the lodge is located around 300 metres down street on the left just before the school. The property has several large trees out front so look for the white timber gates and colonial buildings set back from the road & Blue neon fairy lights at night.
Transport is easily arranged the night before and is currently NZ$30 return per person for crossing , with the bus picking up from and dropping off to the Lodge
