Recently I had a surf lesson with Jamie, It was my first ever time on a board and Jamie did a great job making the lesson fun and a learning experience. Jamie makes you feel safe and confident in the water and is very experienced. You start by learning the technique on land but get plenty of time trying it out and hopefully riding some waves. Although i was an absolute klutz on the water, I had a great time and will definitely be back to try and improve :) Great deal for a three hour lesson and would recommend to anyone who wants to try surfing out and have a good time!

We stayed one night so we could enjoy the Raglan nightlife. This backpackers is perfectly positioned for easy level walk to the shops and cafes. I was impressed with the strict silence maintained on the property overnight which made for a perfect sleep. The double room had excellent blockout blinds

I stayed at the backpackers for 4 nights and took a surfing lesson with Jamie. The hostel is great in it own right, right on the bay, good kitchen with several fridges, a hot tub, and only about a block from the main stretch of town. Negatives are that there isn’t any parking, but just look around the street for some and it tends to work out and it can be quite loud (wind, rain, or people) so bring earphones or ear plugs. Surf lesson was great, water was a bit rough, but Jamie did a great job making me feel safe and in control (even though I had no idea what I was doing). I did manage to stand up a couple times, and had a blast even when I was falling down. Highly recommend, and would have gone back for a second one if the weather would have cooperated. Great place to take a couple days respite.

I'm afraid I can't agree with all the rave reviews. Location is amazing especially if you want to take advantage of kayaks/SUPs but you need to drive to the surf. We found it cluttered and messy and the sauna, a female toilet and shower were out of order (and there weren't many to choose from). Despite the 10pm noise curfew, it was very noisy. We have stayed in lots of backpacker hostels but this one reminds me of one from the 70's - very bohemian, drugs about and too laid back for a business venture - in our opinion.

This place seemed good until we got to really experience the staff working there. On a random Wednesday all the German and French staff decided to party blasting music, screaming, breaking things, and stomping on the roof of our room and right outside our window until 3 am. During the day they also left their stuff everywhere, left piles of dirty dishes in the sink, and napped on all the couches in the common area. Too bad because it seems like it could be a great hostel if the staff weren’t so lousy.

We could highly recommend Raglan backpackers. The accommodation is comfortable, tidy and clean. The staff are very friendly, the location is superb, and the scenery from the backpackers is stunning. Jamie's surf lessons are excellent and a must-do while here. He is knowledgable, a great teacher and passionate about helping others experience surfing, or getting those who have not done it in a while back into it.

Stayed 2 nights with a friend and 3 teenage girls for a 16th birthday weekend. absolutely perfect in every way. Best location as girls could safely come and go to town/beach without adults, but be close by. Close to shops, cafes, beach. Staff were kind, friendly. All other backpackes were courteous and quiet. Amenities were clean- great water pressure :) Comfy beds and pillows- a real bonus for a backpackers.

We have had a fantastic stay at raglan backpackers! Very reasonably priced accomodation and kayak/surf board hire. The hot tub made our trip, and Amy on the front desk could not have been more helpful or friendly. Would definitely recommend!

Great location, hot tub is awesome but very noisy. Non stop noises of people stomping around the wooden boards that pave the way around the courtyard. Noise curfew is not respected at all.

We also found the wannabe ‘cool’ surfer crew quite cliquey and not very welcoming (you say hi then don’t say hi back type of thing). Makes you feel quite isolated if you’re not one of them.

Room Tip: Very noisy so avoid if you want somewhere where people respect the rules of no noise after 10pm.
