Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As one of the very few tourists on Futuna I spent a week at the Somalama and the manager was very helpful. He organised a church visit, a rental car and a trip to the wonderful uninhabited Alofi island for me. So if you need anything, just ask. The hotel is located in the North directly on the seashore, so you have cool breezes and spectacular sunsets at your dinner table. And of course much less noise from cars or people than in town. But you are fairly far away from most things, definitely not walking distance! And there is no real beach there, swimming would be most difficult because of the corals and surf.
The rooms are all facing the back, since the ocean view rooms are still very much a construction sight that you will pass in your hallway. So no room has ocean view or balconies, only a small window. Rooms are large enough and comfortable with a good aircon but not very pretty. They are made of a strange assortment of materials (tiles, faux-wood plastic, dark furniture) and could definitely be improved. Since the last cyclone they have no more hot water in the shower, but cold will suffice most times anyway. Breakfast was very small, only 2 pieces of toast with butter and jam and coffee, while at the other Futuna hotel you will get fresh fruit, cerial etc. too. Evening meals were plentiful but often with very chewy meat and always only icecream for dessert (never any fruit). Finally, you cannot pay by credit card. So make sure you will bring enough cash to the island as there are no ATMs! All in all I enjoyed my stay, had some wonderful walks, met very nice people but finally preferred the second hotel in town. To contact Somalama write to somalama@mail.com. I was on Futuna for 10 days, if you need any information or more pix, just ask me a question through Tripadvisor.

Stayed at the Somalama park Hotel for three nights
Certainly remote and we were tourist number 10 (not sure if that meant ever or for 2016)
Our room was very basic but clean, no hot water( almost got used to this). Only other people staying here were workers from overseas and there are only six rooms.
There are three rooms undereconstruction and one passes them in the hallway..
The meals were always the same with no variety, the sea food was the best choice.
The breakfast was only a cup of tea and and one toast.
The manager Charles and his lovely wife were very hospitable and drove us to the best scenic places to see. The island is full of churches and many under construction.
This time of the year March was full of mosquitoes both day and night. It is very hot and sticky.

There is not a lot of see and one could not go swimming because of the coral reef.

Assez surprenant !

The positives:
- Charles, the hotel manager, is nice and helpful
- A very cool place to see stunning sunsets
- AC
- Free Wifi
The negatives:
- The room was very basic with no hot water (during the fresh season that's kind of a problem...) and hardly clean
- The prices for everything are way too expensive (room, food, drinks, car rental...)
- The room wasn't cleaned once (in 5 days...)
- No toiletries except for a used soap bar
- Payment either in cash or local cheques, no credit cards accepted (even though this is advertised on some websites)

Futuna Island is small but a gem. People are very friendly and there is quite a lot to do (hiking, snorkeling, diving...). Count a week if you want to do it all.
