Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My husband and I cycled from Kumara into Cowboys paradise arriving around 4.30pm, we were greeted by mike and shown to our room which was warm and clean and had a nice hot shower! We were the only guests staying this evening - we had a sunset beer on the beautiful deck, Mike made us a lovely dinner and chatted with us for the evening. Breakfast was served at 8.30am and Mike gave us a spot on weather report and suggested we don’t muck around to ride into Hokitika as the rain was coming in!

Wife and I rode from Kumara to Hokitika on a Friday and we thought we would try for a coffee at Cowboys Paradise although we knew the background to the owner and the reviews, we didnt know what the reception would be like . There was plenty of signage placed by the owner in the approaches and on arrival we found there appeared to be nobody there. We stopped outside the main saloon and looked through the windows at the dancing poles, pro Trump stuff and confederate flags on the walls as there was a sign on the door " Closed , back in 30mins" We decided to sit outside and have our lunch break when the owner came out of an adjacent building, slamming the door and then proceeded to enter and leave various doors in the main building and adjacent building slamming doors and

We arrived mid afternoon and were warmly welcomed by Mike. We were the only 2 there for the night and Mike put on a wonderful roast dinner. We sat and chatted with Mike our on the deck. In the morning breakfast was served at 8am. Mike then made us a ham & salad sandwich and packed it with a fresh muffin for our lunch on the trail. Altogether a wonderful night's stay. Bed was comfortable and shower was great. Mike could not have been more obliging. Thanks Mike for a lovely stay.

Mike was very friendly to my son and I. The room was great and had everything we needed. We had a big dinner and a couple of beers on the balcony enjoying the fantastic view. Would highly recommend it.

We rode from Hokitika to Cowboy Paradise and absolutely loved coming up the hill to the property, stunning to say the least. We were greeted by Mike and he made us fell welcome, showed us to our room which was tidy, clean and in good order. We had dinner which was plentiful, tasty and enjoyed by all. Breakfast was good and we set of towards Kumara felling great after our stay. Thanks Mike for your down to earth West Coast hospitality!

We had a great time, the reviews are correct the water pressure is fabulous, the rooms were tidy and clean, the food plentiful and Mike chatted to us all night. We didn’t know what to expect but it was our most memorable night. Well done Mike, you keep being you and hope you keep entertaining people for many more years to come. Yes, if you’re looking for chocolates on your bed this is not the place for you.

We booked Cowboy Paradise because of its location on the Wilderness cycle trail (approx halfway between Kumara and Hokitika) and we were not disappointed. There are wonderful views of the maintains and Arahura valley from the spacious deck and saloon. The accommodation was comfortable (awesome showers) and the evening buffet meal was excellent. Mike was a welcoming and attentive host. You don’t need mains power and cell phone coverage in a place like this - we enjoyed a late afternoon/evening of conversation and reading. Next morning after a generous breakfast we set off again feeling refreshed. Cowboy Paradise was an ideal stopover.

My dear friend- 77 and myself 65…cycled into Cowboy Paradise on February 16th from Kumara. We were warmly and politely welcomed by Mike.. shown our very clean warm room and informed when dinner was. It was great and we all… including other cyclists all tucked in for seconds. Being older women - with private schooling education and having run our own businesses we can see how such a recent damaging review could affect the future of this great accommodation stop. Did the recent family not realise they were doing ‘ The Wilderness Trail?!’ Try the Heaphy track ,Goat Pass etc were there is no generator at all! Along with no cell phone reception! What were you thinking if you cant handle getting away from it all ?? Thanks Mike.. all the best and I hope you are there when I come back

We arrived at cowboys paradise after riding for 2 hours in non stop torrential rain. We had hot showers, clean dry towels to use and a warm cabin to change in. We then made our way to the saloon and was pleasantly impressed with the atmosphere and vibe. It was so good to have a refreshing drink before helping ourselves to a sumptuous roast dinner (3 meats) buffet. It was delicious and the hospitality was great. After a very comfortable night's sleep we returned to the saloon for a full cooked breakfast before heading off on another days riding.Yes the power did go off at 11.00 but we were into deep sleep well before then. There is no cell phone coverage, but we knew that was the situation well before we arrived.
