Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a great place to visit. Views are amazing.
Units are nice and comfy. Showers have tremendous water pressure.
Tea was a lovely home cooked meal.
Breakfast was continental, and all you could eat.
Had a great night with the other guests and host.

We stopped at this establishment during a day ride on the Wilderness Trail as we'd been told we could get a coffee there. The place was all locked up and as we stopped, a "gentleman" came out of a side door and told us brusquely that the place was closed and to move on to the toilets and picnic area down the track aways. So we did, stopping at the end of the building to look down the valley, to be yelled at and told to move on, go away. We did!
We met another cyclist shortly after who declared he was the rudest man she had ever met as , when she stopped to chat with him, he ranted and raved about his very right wing view of the world.
Our advice is to leave this place off your itinerary if what we were greeted with is any indication of the place.

A cool rustic but very comfortable place with loads of character. An oasis in the bush.
Despite varied feedback, we were excited about staying with Mike at the Cowboys.
After being advised not to arrive before 3pm ( mainly due to firing up generator and the fact it is a working farm) we chilled for a while on the trail and arrived at about 310. Mike was as expected a gruff but harmless Westcoast man. The rooms were fab. Clean and comfortable and the main saloon full of interesting character. Not everyone's cup of tea, but nothing overtly insensitive ( unless you're a bit precious and easily offended.....) After an lovely shower and change, a few cold beverages with a stunning view was just the ticket. Mike was entertaining, argumentative and indeed a character. Cooked a great hearty dinner and enjoyed healthy debate about a range of subjects. We never felt unsafe or unwelcome. If you remember its his home and land and you respect his place and expectations on how to behave, then you wont have a problem. If you don't then prepared to be told! Nothing PC here so don't expect otherwise.
We had a great time and would recommend to anyone that is respectful when visiting someone's home.

Having completed day 2 of the Wilderness cycle trail, stopping at Cowboy Paradise was a treat. I've read the reviews and was told in advance that it was different.

It's not for the precious or those who are accustomed to being treated "special". The food was great, the accommodation was great, the setting is out of this world and it was a good experience.

The night we were there it was full and everyone had a great night.

I'd happily stay again.

Well what can one say, its a cross between Fawlty towers and Gordon Ramsey, definitely an experience and wouldn't be put off coming back. Same issues and complaints obviously been going on for years and it will never improve. Good luck to the cycle trail people who need to get this sorted somehow, maybe suggest to Mike put a Manager in who knows how to keep staff and be pleasant. He is definitely a character.

A few lounger chairs or couches would have been great in the saloon to stretch out on after the ride to get there.

Mr Cowboy Paradise is an extremely aggressive abusive person. He swore violently at my wife because we arrived to stay before 3pm, his apparent arrival time (we didn’t know). We were eager to get under cover because rain was setting in.
For around 40 minutes he refused to let us into our room, and when he did, he did not turn on the power or heating until 3pm.
For the rest of our stay, until we left the next morning, he was aggressively rude to us. We felt unsafe in his presence, particularly my wife.
Considering we had to pay $250 to stay there, plus $66 for meals and a beer, we knew we deserved much better service.
I would not recommend to anyone that you consider staying there.
I had a similar experience when I stayed there with some mates several years ago. He went ballistic at one of our group who took his bike inside, and then was abusively rude to us for the rest of our overnight stay.
Silly decision for me to go back again!

What a terrible place if you are anything other than a white heterosexual male who likes to eat off filthy tablecloths and walk on grime in their rooms. To those who defend the cowboy by saying ‘just take it on the chin’, it’s all meant in good fun’ , ‘don’t be a prude’ do you really think shaming migrants, berating women and bad behavior belong to this century, or this country. Shame on Cycle Journeys for offering this accommodation to their bike clients. It does not reflect well on the values of the company.

After biking 64Km from Greymouth, Cowboy Paradise was a welcome sight. We were met by Mike and shown to our room a very clean, modern room with bathroom facilities.
Dinner that night was a beautifully cooked roast and vegetables ,with plenty for those who wanted seconds. Breakfast the next day was continental.
We enjoyed our stay, plenty of banter, interesting opinions but all in good humour.
It’s a pity the tour companies don’t encourage cyclist to try something beyond the square.

My group of 12 received torrents of abuse. We arrived too early. We stayed calm. We apologised but were told sorry doesn’t effing cut it. We asked if we could
help and were told we could eff off and go back and start the effing ride again. It was ridiculous and yes we felt trapped as he already had all our money for the very pricey rooms. 100% unpleasant experience.

The host of this accommodation is obnoxious, unhelpful and bad tempered. He criticized other hosts on the trail who were far superior to him.The food hygiene standards are questionable as we saw him taking food from the pans with his fingers. I was on a bike ride in the rain. No drying facilities in the rooms- not a hook to hang anything on. The lighting is terrible if you want to read in bed. And there were no tea bags at breakfast. The only good thing was the hot shower.
