Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a great place to visit. Views are amazing. Units are nice and comfy. Showers have tremendous water pressure. Tea was a lovely home cooked meal. Breakfast was continental, and all you could eat. Had a great night with the other guests and host.

Avoid like the plague if you don't want to be subjected to a barrage of foul mouthed, conspiracy theories, aggressive mannerisms and general BS. The saving grace was the accommodation which was comfortable, clean, warm, the food which was plentiful yet basic yet expensive.. Overpriced for what you get would I stay again? Yes, if the owner wasn't around

Unfriendly aggressive owner. Told us to F off as we didn’t buy breakfast when we stayed (it didn’t say anywhere we had to. We bought dinner the night before and just wanted to get on the trail). We were with international visitors and they were shocked. Avoid.

This is the third time I have been with friends to Cowboy Paradise. It is always memorable, and shouldn't be missed if you are biking the West Coast Wilderness Trail. Mike is one of West Coast's characters. Open your mind and give it a go, you will love it. Clean rooms, and a great roast dinner. And a view to die for.

My husband and I stayed here overnight whilst doing a 2day cycle along the wilderness trail. We were on ordinary bikes not e-bikes by the way. Mike greeted us in a friendly manner when we arrived and told us about the power being off overnight as it was supplied via a generator. We enjoyed a beer or two on the sunny deck with great views. Mike cooked a delicious home cooked meal. Nothing fancy just good old wholesome food like your mother cooked. He joined us after dinner and proved to be an interesting character. A little rough around the edges. Our accommodation was clean and comfortable. After a good nights rest and a continental breakfast we set off on our merry way. Lucky we had done some research on the place before committing to staying there so our expectations were not high and we went with an open mind to enjoy the experience. Suggest if you are a prude don’t stay there

This was a highlight of the Wilderness Trail! Mike is such an entertaining host, and we had a fabulous meal and lovely accommodation. Mike is a unique character, one of those most memorable people that add spice and colour to life! He has an alternative view on many issues, but it was most enjoyable to spend this evening in his hotel. Breakfast was superb and just the start we needed to continue on this stunning journey. I thoroughly recommend staying at Cowboy Paradise. Keep an open mind!!

After biking 64Km from Greymouth, Cowboy Paradise was a welcome sight. We were met by Mike and shown to our room a very clean, modern room with bathroom facilities. Dinner that night was a beautifully cooked roast and vegetables ,with plenty for those who wanted seconds. Breakfast the next day was continental. We enjoyed our stay, plenty of banter, interesting opinions but all in good humour. It’s a pity the tour companies don’t encourage cyclist to try something beyond the square. Phil and Cheryl

What a great spot we rode in from Hokitika into a wonderful welcome from Mike with a few laughs. Fantastic accomodation with awesome hot shower. Cold drinks on the deck watching the sun go down followed by an awesome meal with 2nds. Great stories and Banter Mike has his views but don’t he afraid to express yours. Remember everyone has a back ground story if you get to hear Mikes it worth a listen. He’s a legend in the area and I bet he has a heart of gold just give him a chance. Would have loved to stay another night.Felt safe and secure do you really need wifi and power after 10am of course not in fact it was great to be off the grid for 24 hours.Highly recommend will be back one day.

This is our third stop over at cowboys.comfortable, well presented motel style accommodation for 2-4 people. Legendary roast dinner with lamb chicken and 9 veg.- with seconds ! The saloon is rustic with magnificent views on a sunny deck looking down the arahura valley. A comprehensive continental breakfast sets you up for the ride. Some of the tour operators are doing their best not to accommodate drop offs and picks ups, so we carried our kit for the overnight stop. Why drive an hour back to hokitika when you can relax on the deck with a cold beer and exchange experiences with other riders? You might not agree with mike’s political views but he is is up for a robust debate.
