Detailed Reviews
We stayed here one night whilst doing the west coast wilderness cycle trail and really appreciated the wonderful location and unique environment. Mike ( the owner and host) was a very welcoming ,(contrary to some reviews) and we were very comfortable and well fed. This place would be awesome for a special occasion like a stag/hen do, a 21st, an anniversary. It is a truly unique experience.

We booked Cowboy Paradise because of its location on the Wilderness cycle trail (approx halfway between Kumara and Hokitika) and we were not disappointed. There are wonderful views of the maintains and Arahura valley from the spacious deck and saloon. The accommodation was comfortable (awesome showers) and the evening buffet meal was excellent. Mike was a welcoming and attentive host. You don’t need mains power and cell phone coverage in a place like this - we enjoyed a late afternoon/evening of conversation and reading. Next morning after a generous breakfast we set off again feeling refreshed. Cowboy Paradise was an ideal stopover.

Don't go expecting a luxurious lodging experience and don't go if your offended by most things. It is what it is and Mike's not claiming it isn't. I've stayed there twice whilst completing the Wilderness Trail. Both times had positive experiences. The second time I rang at 7pm en route, was told it was fully booked but Mike managed to find me a bed for the night which was greatly appreciated, and i was fed - all for $25! Amazing. Mike's a classic coaster and offering a much needed accommodation option, keep up the good work! (actually glad to hear it hasn't changed much since i was last there in Feb 2020)

While the location is stunning and the room was good, I felt it was overpriced. The food was also average at best and overpriced for what it was (mainly because of the massacred meat!). I also found the owner quite creepy and his comments about pole dancing staff (or lack off) didn’t help that impression. The whole arrangement seemed strange and creepy to me with him alone out there with two young woofers (as I understand from a local). He has a captive market but as the next leg of the WCWT to Hokitika is quite easy I’d recommend stopping for a drink and moving on rather than staying the night.

We stayed the night at Cowboy Paradise while biking the West Coast Wilderness trail in a group of 10.
We arrived at about 2pm and were greeted cordially by Mike.
He provided a nice roast meal and for a small extra charge we were entertained by a couple of pole dancers. It was good clean fun.
You pay a corkage if you take in your own alcohol.
The pricing of his alcohol Is reasonable given the remote location.
Rooms are fine.
Well worth the experience.

Yes, we read about various "problems" here, and yes, there were a couple of harmless retorts. As for feeling unsafe, blimey, I hope those people never walk down Queen Street or ride a bike on a mountain trail. The place is in the Wilderness - hence the generator and no cell phone cover. Good grief, for one night do you NEED 24 hour comforts of home. Enjoy talking to each other. Lovely roast dinner, spotlessly clean room, linen and bathroom with seemingly unlimited hot water, we have struck much worse in Top camping grounds and the ride up to the place is an absolute highlight!

We visited Cowboy Paradise for a drink in the late afternoon, while riding the WCW trail from Kumara to Lake Kaniere. The welcoming by the owner was creepy akward, yet we have him the benefit of the doubt, support locals you know. Oh boy, we were wrong: irrespective of your opinion, you shouldn't rant about it in a rudely manner to clients - unasked. We clearly did not enjoy our unwanted discussion with him, so why keep on discussing it with us? We have tried to keep an open mind with the owner, yet in our opinion, he's a racist, demeaning to women, unpollite, and we found his reasoning filled with illogical arguments. This completely spoils the location and setting of Cowboy Paradise. We felt sorry we supported a local which does only support old white males.

Stayed here despite having had negative feedback and wouldn't stay again. The place itself is fine (more than fine given its location) but Mike is a sexist, racist bigot. Give it a miss if you can - it's an easy ride from Kumara to Hokitika. If you need to stay then suggest you avoid getting into a discussion with him - it's a hiding to nowhere for any half rational human. All of the comments about comfy beds, hot showers and the big basic meal are spot on but I resented giving my money to Mike.
Roll on the day that he finally sells CP to someone who likes people and who can make CP a really welcoming experience in a gorgeous part of NZ.
For any visitors to NZ planning a stay there... please don't think that Mike is a typical Kiwi.

Having read previous reviews we were a bit reluctant to go here. But we really wanted to do the West Coast Wilderness ride and the logistics made this place essential. After riding 40+ miles from Greymouth we were warmly greeted by two young women who work for Mike (Anna and Zena). They were wonderful. They welcomed us, checked us in, got us our requested beer and made us a sandwich. We had an en-suite cottage which was clean, pleasant, and comfortable. Dinner was a good home cooked meal - chicken, pork chops, potatoes, veggies and salad. We also purchased wine with our meal. The view from the lodge is stunning and eating family style with the other guests was great. Between the Otaga Rail Trail, the West Coast Wilderness trail and assorted stops in between, this was one of our favorite places. It’s not fancy but it’s exactly right for two cyclists wanting a warm comfortable place to spend a night on the trail.

My husband and I rode into Cowboy Paradise from Kumaru arriving late afternoon with the sun shining.Location is just beautiful, peaceful ,quiet with stunning views down the valley from the saloon deck.
We were politely welcomed by Mike and shown our cabin which was clean comfortable warm with plenty of hot water ,all that we required for a comfy stay. Take a head torch if you get up during the night as the generator is turned off around 1015 for the night, back on around 0700 in the morning.
We were the only 2 staying the night yet Mike cooked us a roast dinner with chicken , lamb and 9 different vegetables really delicious and plentiful for second helping.
Mike was an amusing, delighful host, yes he probably sings from a different song sheet then most hospitality managers but I like difference , diversity and country music.
Breakfast at 0800 was a good range of cereals, fruit ,yoghrt ,toast and spreads to see us on our way.
Cowboy Paradise stay was a highlight for us along the Wilderness Trail.
All the best for the future Mike
