Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a true outback pub and being here is an experience in and of itself. I was passing through on the way to Lawn Hill/Adels Grove & decided to spend a night here to save energy for the treacherous 90km unsealed journey I had in front of me (it’s a very rocky & bumpy road in to Lawn Hill).

The motel room was $140 a night and was spacious and well equipped (though lights on the verandah need to be fixed so they actually work). It’s a small community and having dinner at the pub drove home this point. There is a community of workers who drive in & drive out from out of town. Bruce my neighbour in the motel (a soil tester on a DIDO roster from Townsville) was super friendly and told me about Murray’s Cafe across the road (where I scored espresso coffee and muffins for breakfast) and got me a bag of ice for the road. I really enjoyed meeting Bruce and the punters in the pub were jovial and friendly.

The pub meals are magnificent. I was there on pizza night and my supreme pizza was tasty and huge (so huge I couldn’t finish it). It did take 30 minutes to arrive which was long but I put it down to a skeleton staff in the kitchen & it being around 7pm when I ordered (the peak time for food).

I refuelled the next morning (petrol price was insane, only get it if you have to) and got some cash out. I had the card decline the first time but then it was fine the second time. I will say the gentlemen reacted unexpectedly when I said that the card usually approves with no problem. He jumped quickly to the defensive saying it’s an issue with my bank etc. I’d recommend next time he take a deep breath and just give it another go next time without the reaction. It’s the country, chill out, everything was fine ultimately and it didn’t need to be as uncomfortable. Other than this, service and hospitality was very good.

All in all, this was a great country hotel to stop off at. I donned my hat & sunscreen and walked down to nearby Gregory Creek passing agile wallabies and native finches and had a refreshing dip in the emerald green water surrounded by vegetation. The bird life in the area was unexpectedly abundant - having a beer on the verandah I saw eagles, native budgerigars, crimson finches and other bird species.

Tip for the road I’m from Four Ways - look out for animals. I saw a few kangaroos including 2 on the road and lots of roadkill. There were also cattle on the road at one point (not uncommon out this way).

Visited a few times while in the area and enjoyed meals purchased and cold drinks

Locals gather here often and Sunday staff are friendly and helpful. Old fashioned service where staff remember what you drink.

Would recommend pub visit.

Did not stay here though did check out camping area. Dust bowl with no power available.

Our stay at the camp ground was entirely the result of being warned off the 'seriously rough' gravel access road to nearby Adel's Grove, and repeated rumours that the grove facilities themselves were closed. Gregory Downs is a very good spot for bird watchers and just taking it easy down by the river. There is an excellent coffee outlet just over the road from the pub. Check out the crimson finches.

Stopped for lunch on our way through to Adel's. Manager so friendly and helpful. Clean amenities and Pub. Lovely fresh sandwich and fuel was available. We felt prices were absolutely fair considering the remote location (a long way from Coles or a large fuel depot!). A really fun place to stop :)

Rudeness of the Staff is unreal . Pub staff rude . Kitchen staff rude . Food come out and chips were more like salt with chips . Didn’t eat them and staff didn’t care .
Do NOT waist your time or dollars stopping here .
And to top it off Rubbished a business up the road after hubby asked any zero beer . Don’t be stupid mate was answer . Hubby said can get it at another business up road he laughs and then proceeded to rubbish the business . Not very professional to do that .

This quaint old hotel has such a welcoming feel about it, from the minute we walked in we felt like locals. This is hospitality as it should be, and considering where it is, the prices are great, the beer, wine, food , accommodation and even the fuel. But back to the food, this place even had a real chef! Thank you for the great service Jo and Cassie, we loved our stay.

Driving through the region, I have stopped at this pub twice in two years - both times I have had a salad sandwich with a cool lemon squash. the sandwich has been perfect and the drink great. Really recommend stopping for a quick snack.

All the negative reviews are correct. The staff are extremely rude, the food is crap our chips were limp and soggy, steak was chewy on steak sandwich and pasta was terrible, the place is a dump. Id avoid this place for sure and go to Murray's or have a snack by the river.

We camped at the river but did have lunch at the pub one day and drinks the next. It's the ultimate outback pub. Dogs tied to the fence, greetings to everyone sitting out the front, and of course cold beer and a feed.
Staff are friendly, facilities are clean and my chips and gravy were bloody perfect.
Drop in and support this community, especially if you're camping for free.

Room Tip: It's an outback pub, not a 5 star city hotel, so don't expect a 5 star city hotel.

Found the staff great. Ordered rump steak and found it cooked as I ordered and very tasty. Couldn’t eat it all actually. If you want big city BS then don’t come here and complain. Enjoy the country feel, relax on the banks of the Gregory river and carry on with your journey. Fuel costs terrible but it was back in Julia Creek so not going to any better going further off the beaten track.
