We stayed there for just one night and already regret not spending more time there.
The hotel is absolutely superb, located on a hill overlooking the rice fields. What is particularly impressive is how much care they put into creating a lovely and warm atmosphere.

The (private) rooms are huge, well decorated and you can almost feel like you're staying half between a charming cow-boy ranch and a mountain cabin. Everything is made out of wood and well preserved. Drinking water is filtered from the surrounding mountains, snacks are all locals. This is obviously not aiming at being a 5 star resort but the whole setting makes it feel comfortable and pleasant. Definitely one of the most elegant hotels I have stayed in Asia.

The only minus I would give is for the food. Not on the quality, it's quite good, but on the quantity. They ask that you select among 6 or 7 pre-defined menus which all comes with many dishes each. We were a family of 5 and we each ordered the same menu set. But they only brought like 1 or 2 of each dishes to share among everyone. I guess they were thinking that there was no need to actually bring 5 rices, 5 porks, 5 fishes etc. The issue is that we paid for the full price of 5 sets. When mentioning it to the owner, he said "OK" and just brought 2 more dishes like this was bothering him to have to cook the actual amount of food ordered. Not a big deal but it felt a bit trickery and dishonest.

Breakfast is good. Place is amazing. Go there, no question asked!

The location of our hotel on a hill overlooking the rice fields does provide a stunning view, and we're glad that you found the atmosphere lovely and warm. We take pride in creating a comfortable and welcoming environment for our guests. Our private rooms are designed to offer a unique and charming experience, blending elements of a cow-boy ranch and a mountain cabin. I travelled to Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge with a bunch of Vietnamese friends (I'm Australian) for the weekend. It was an easy drive (quite long, but we had ample stops) through stunning scenery, up into the mountain areas north-west of Hanoi. The Ecolodge is set in a sheltered valley among rice paddies and farms and within walking distance to the local village. The accommodation is delightful: rooms are well appointed, clean and charming and built from sustainably sourced wood. The landscaped gardens are gorgeous and worth a stroll and a picture. And of course, there's the view! It's stunning. And the air is so clean! Meals are regional delicacies, cooked fresh by local staff and there are vegetarian options for non-meat eaters. I especially loved the coffee and banana pancakes in the morning! Dzung, the owner, is a charming and generous host - nothing was too much trouble. For those worried about the language barrier, don't be. Dzung speaks fluent English and French. Dzung (and his sister, who is a part-owner) will take care of you and make you feel like you are part of their family. You'll feel both relaxed an rejuvenated after your stay at Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge - can highly recommend.

Getting to the Ecolodge is an adventure in itself, particularly if you forego the ludicrous $100+ taxi ride from Sapa and get yourself a spot on the Lao Cai Local. This bus, sort of mid-way in size between a mini-van and giant tourist bus, makes stops everywhere to pick-up and deliver mail, packages, food, farm implements, the occasional chicken. Nominally a 4-hour ride from Sapa, ours turned into a 7-hour, blog-postable, E-ticket excursion through some of the most beautiful rice fields and sharp-peaked mountains on Earth. The lodge itself is worth visiting for the dinner alone - usually a 6 or 7-course affair priced at a very reasonable (for the location) $7. The bungalows are clean and comfy, and the views (ours was the Rice Room) are spectacular. Where else can one awaken to sound of water buffalo. Hop on a motorcycle (no automatic shifts) for $10 a day, and explore the countryside, filled with working Hmong ladies in their colorful outfits, to little piglets everywhere. Stop for lunch in the tiny village down the way for some hot pork Pho or even Bun Cha. The people are happy and engaging, but you'll have to make do with hand gestures and cell phone translators if you don't speak Vietnamese. A couple of tips: don't come unprepared. You'll need CASH, as the hotel (at this writing) does not accept credit cards. The closest ATM is a 2-hour return taxi ride. There's a mosquito net over the bed in the bungalows, but we were unable to find mosquito repellent in any store. There was NOT a bad problem with skeeters when we were there (October) but if the little guys love you like they love me, you'll want to come prepared. Finally, the Lodge sits on a high hill, and getting up there can be a very steep walk for some folks. The staff, especially Chua, the only real English speaker, is exceptionally kind and helpful. Mr. Nguyen, who runs the place from Hanoi, is a fine English speaker ready to help with all manner of reservation and logistical questions. He was also uncommonly kind and trusting in helping us when a family health emergency in the U.S. required adjustments to our plans. Get up EARLY every morning, and just enjoy the amazing air, the world-class sunrises, and coffee-to-die-for. You'll remember it always.

Nice location in a beautiful valley. We had a great time until a group of 25 local tourists arrived and turned the place into their own private drinking hole. They came back at midnight completely drunk next door to us and spent the next few hours screaming and vomiting loudly. To be avoided.

One of my favorite places that I stayed at during my trip to Northern Vietnam. I liked the authentic buildings and the very nice setting on top of the hill overlooking the rice paddies. The lodge is rather small with a limited number of guests which also made my stay very enjoyable.

My room was huge with a nice area to sit and a very comfortable bed. I also liked some of the complimentary fruits and snacks that were delicious. The food at the restaurant for both lunch and dinner was really good too. They offer set menus with 5-6 different dishes and the quality of the food was excellent.

There was almost no other nice accommodation, besides the ecologe, in Mu Cang Chai the time I visited. The place was lovely on a small hill, surrounded by rice paddies. Surrounding area was very peaceful and quiet. The hotel ground was very well maintained with beautiful flowers and a small fish pond.
I got assigned to a lovely room away from the reception area, with a lot of privacy and a lovely view of rice paddies. The ensuite bathroom was very clean with a shower area and separated toilet.
The reception area was nice with a small restaurant which served simple authentic Vietnamese food. Everything was so well run by Tri Dzung and his staffs. The lodge could arrange local tours and hikes and even pickup/dropoff from Hanoi.
It was very "luxury" to have such a comfortable and clean stay in an area that has only homestay accommodation.
