Unless you are a church group or similar i would stay well clear of this place. The owners seemed completely disinterested in helping you and just complained about every little noise one made and were more interested in their own needs than trying to make your stay enjoyable. Suggest they should find an alternative profession as being hospitable is definitely not one of their attributes
Had dinner at the restaurant. It was excellent, and we're food snobs. We shared bread with oil and balsamic and squid that was delicate and not overcooked, and I had a lamb shank while my wife had snapper with cumin, and each came with a wonderful rooty side salad. This was the best meal we had had in a week. The lodge is a lodge, has all the amenities, is comfortable, but the walls were a bit thin when one has Kiwi neighbors. The wifi would not let me on.
Stopped in to this lodge for a quick lunch bite as we were touring the island. Beautiful position overlooking Whangaparapara Harbour - perfect for day trippers in cars and even better for those on the water. Lunch was served on the deck overloking the lawn and harbour. We had fresh, toasted sandwiches - a limited menu due to season I presume. Also fresh organic juice. Great stop and easy to find.
We recently stayed at this lodge and were completely satisfied with everything. Archie and Erika are fantastic hosts, welcoming, friendly, and extremely helpful, giving us advice about lots of Barrier activities and customs. Rooms were great with exceptional views of Whangaparapara harbour, food was really great (although we did cook some of our own on the barbecues provided), and costs were very reasonable. Lots of activities nearby, and all around the island. A really great stay, and we will definitely come back here to this slow-paced lifestyle on an island with lots to experience. Highly recommended.
My partner and I enjoyed a great vacation to the Great Barrier Lodge. The location of the lodge meant, without a car, we were in position to go on numerous hikes, kayaking, hot springs, and swimming. We also loved the food served at their restaurant, and were so impressed that for such reasonable prices we could eat so well! The managers here were so lovely to us providing us with maps and advice throughout our trip as well. Really looking to a return visit!
Took the company for a night away. Transfers and charter was organised by Archie and all included in the one invoice. Drinks on the boat as well as lunch were catered for by the lodge and were awesome. Service and food back at the lodge was great. Everybody was impressed with the rooms and were talking about coming back again themselves. Bar service was fantastic too. The location was stunning with Kayaks and paddle boards available for use as well as advise on other activities available. Highly recommended. Very accommodating hosts.
Such an amazing place to stay such friendly staff and OUTSTANDING food! The rooms are very clean and have everything you need with gorgeous views to the water! Thank you so much for having us stay at your little slice of paradise we'll definitely be back :)
Having spent a lot of time at Great Barrier Island & in Whangaparapara Harbour on our boat, it was a nice change to experience the views & wildlife from onshore. Great Barrier Lodge is just the perfect place to do so! The staff were AMAZING! They quietly buzzed around making sure that everything was 'just so' & everyone was happy, without encroaching. The lunch they packed for us to take out on the charter boat was just perfect, as was dinner that evening & the fully cooked breakfast the next day. The local artworks are a beautiful & interesting touch that just add to the serenity of the Lodge, as well as historic pieces that tell stories of the immediate area. The individual cabins are clean, very comfortable & private, each with stunning water views & more of the amazing…
Amazingly convenient from Auckland, by Gt Barrier airlines, Dairy Flat. 30 min flight & 15 mins by hire car and we were there feet up admiring the view from room 4 of the harbour and coming and going so at the wharf Took in several walks thru the bush and visited various pristine beaches on the East coast thanks to the guidance of our Host Archie. Make sure you visit Windy Canyon, spectacular Dined in and meals were varied and excellent especially the fish Room was nice and clean and most importantly quiet and peaceful with great view of the harbour Really recharged the batteries and thanks Archie and Erica for you hospitality you have the perfect escape hole
