The hosts at Great Barrier Lodge are so friendly and made us feel very welcome. The in-house chef and baker were fantastic and apart from the waistline growing the food was excellent as was the organisation and cleanliness of the whole Lodge. Great stay for our whole group who attended a conference. Thanks Ang, we really appreciated the hospitality.

We only stopped in for dinner but the meal was amazing, the hosts were great and very welcoming. Pricing was very good, better than Auckland prices for food and drinks. Best to book as it is a little isolated which makes it very appealing.

Going to Great Barrier is a different experience as there is no grid power only solar which is supplemented by generators , making night sky viewing amazing on a clear night. The owners at the Lodge went out of their way to please when it came to service and meals, even making special meals that were not on the menu. Everything was very clean and comfortable with nice gardens around the Lodge, plenty of seating on either side of our room which was great depending on sun and wind. Unbeknownst to us , my husband had left his electric toothbrush behind and it wasn't until we were about to board our plane that we heard our names called. The owner had driven 16 km over windy roads, some of it metal ,to bring it to us. Absolutely above and beyond the call of service. The owners are

Great Barrier lodge is a fantastic place to stay! The location is just beautiful. Romote enough that it feels like it is its own little world and still close enough to everything! Its nice and quiet and the view from the porch is stunning. The staff is wonderful, and the very sporty manager (came in second in the marathon!) is probably the most easy going person on the island! He even gave me a free ride to the airport when my flight was suddenly moved up. Would absolutly stay there again! A must visit for everyone looking for paradise!

Hi Beate V, Thanks for taking the time to review us, and your lovely comments about our location, view and the peace and quiet, the perfect place to relax after three days walking the Aotea Track. Was my pleasure to give you a ride to the airport glad you were able to make your flight. See you back on the island again. Cheers Archie PS The race I spoke about was held again about two weeks ago, and this time I came 1st.

We loved our stay here for the lodge itself - nice room, nice view (studio unit) The manager Archie is friendly enough but after a couple of times of needing to ask for something we were then scared to - seemed to pee him off at bit. Sorry to say almost like a fawlty towers experience. We felt our requests were not a nuisance but we were made to feel guilty about it with his body language and "huffing". Like we said nice place, lovely food, great location but if service is your priority don't come here.

Hi joc 6447, Thanks for the feedback and thanks for taking the time to write a review. Sorry to hear that my service was not up to standard whilst you were with us, I simply, as you say must have been having a John Cleese day ! Apologies for that. I do spend most of my day tending to the various needs of our guests, some reasonable and sometimes not so reasonable. Again apologies for my questionable service standard. All the best with your future travels. Cheers Archie

We stayed in the little self-contained cottage. It is comfortable and clean inside etc. Because of been on an island there is no TV, no hairdryer, no cellphone coverage and limited lights can be used. All cooking and heating is by gas - to us this wasn't a problem. We would recommend you take books etc to help fill in the evenings. We loved being in this location away from busier areas on the island, more secluded. Use of kayaks complimentary was a bonus we took advanced of and enjoyed exploring the other side of the harbor in this way. The hosts are friendly and helpful.

Gidday Carol & Dave, Thanks heaps for choosing to stay with us, and very much appreciate the feedback. Thanks much mentioning our secluded location,, it really helps our guests relax and wind down from a busy mainland life. Mobile phone coverage out here is slowly getting better, Vodafone is Ok in some parts of our bay, but Spark is nowhere to be found ! Again thanks for taking the time to review us. Cheers Archie

Fantastic location and a perfect base from which to explore GBI. Wharf proved a good spot for fishing with the kids. The lodge has an excellent deck that captures the afternoon sun. Perfect !! Excellent wine selection and while the menu is limited to 4 mains ( function of being on an island) we can recommend the lamb shanks - a very tasty and big eat.

Hi drsureshsb, Thanks for taking the time to write a review about Great Barrier Island, we appreciate the feedback and the time taken. You have added some helpful info for other travelers. Whangaparapara is a little bit off the track compared to other places on the Island, we like this, as it gives us a real NZ away from it all feel. Happy Travels. cheers Archie
