Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
What a special time. There is a healing balm in coming to Orama and just relaxing, watching the sunset, and enjoying the quiet beauty. My wife and I needed to relax, and the little cottage on the shore, 20 meters from the water's edge, was special and helped us achieve our 'relax' goal. The food was exceptional, as it should be when it was prepared by a highly qualified chef—two of them, in fact. If you are looking for a getaway that is exceptional AND has a beautiful little bay to canoe and then fish, all on the same day, then Orama is your choice.

I was thrilled with my stay at Orama. Coming to spend time with my sister Jo, and getting to know the community members was a joy. The nature of the community was kind and generous and the welcoming encounters with the residents were refreshing. The premise was clean and tidy with creative touches everywhere which reflected that people enjoy being there and have big hearts within the place. I am really grateful for everyone's contributions to the community. The food was amazing and the accommodation in Parkside 2 was all good. I was very grateful to join the worship in the mornings as this focussed my stay.

We had a wonderful stay in one of the Whalers Cabins for 3 nights in January. Loved the little details, like the line and pegs provided outside the cabin for our wet togs. Comfy beds were great and the showers were good. Snorkelling at Barbecue Bay was great (15 minute walk and we had the whole bay to ourselves) - saw heaps of fish and a stingray! Swimming off the jetty/boat ramp at Orama was fun too. Loved seeing the pateke just wandering around at Orama. All in all - had a great time, and our thanks to the Orama team.

The accommodation is very basic, like your grandparent's batch but that's part of the charm. Staff are just wonderful and make you feel at home. The location is very remote, the transfer service is really helpful but if you want to enjoy Great Barrier I recommend bringing your car or hiring one on the Island

What a secret gem this place is. In a beautiful bay and with genuinely lovely people looking after the facility.
We stayed in the lodge itself which was clean and with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities but we were the only people using this accommodation area.

I don’t think I’ve ever been somewhere so quiet and peaceful! On our first night we had the most amazing sunset, then dolphins came in to frolic in the bay!!! The perfect spot for our 7yo and 6yo kids. Easy to see them playing in the creek and on the tramp.

As a family we stayed in the two units on the waterfront, which worked perfectly. Plenty of swimming, diving off the jetty and tramps with various grades. The major disappointment was that kayaks were not available to guests, although there were many on-shore, apparently personally owned. People like ourselves, are experienced kayakers at home so in hindsight we should have checked availability before arrival. Mosquitoes were a slight challenge. We self-catered so didn't choose meals in the dining room.

Last minute decision to head over from Auckland for a weekend of fishing and diving. Jo was great at communicating with us as we needed to moor up our boat and were checking in after hours. She was very accommodating with our request to tie up to the jetty for the night.
We stayed in the lodge, rooms were very clean along with linen and towels. Bathrooms and kitchen facilities were also spotless.
Will be returning for sure, thanks Jo & Orama team
