Detailed Reviews
My husband and I had the perfect stay in Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island in a perfect cottage (same would be true of the larger house if you are going with a larger family/group of friends) in the midst of the Glenfern pest fenced sanctuary. The historic cottage is made comfortable with a well done renovation, the rooms are comfortable, thoughtfully furnished, the colours relaxing, the sheets and towels all cotton and fresh. The kitchen/living space is made exceptionally comfortable by a full view of the lovely Fitzroy harbour and a fully functioning wood burning stove that wards off any chill. The rooms are spotless (zero mold or mildew) and the windows are sparklingly clear and clean - as is the water in the harbour! The bathroom is great, lots of good hot water and plenty of pressure. Everything about the cottage is exceptionally nice; it really is that good. And then there is all of the spectacular outdoors, at the doorstep. Kaka, Kereru, kingfishers all just outside the cottage door. There are walks on the property for all times of day - early morning up a stream, to a pond with pateke paddling, or to sunset rock. One morning the gracious and generous hosts/caretakers took us up to the Mt. Hobson trailhead ( Palmer Trak) and then drove our car down to the other end of the trail so that we were able to pick it up after a full day of tramping. We stayed for four days and there was nothing that didn't exceed expectations. Perfectly private - but very well cared for, We can't wait to go back.

Just a quick note to say thanks again for having us.
This was our (ever expanding) groups second trip to the Barrier and stay at Glenfern Lodge, and needless to say the group will no doubt grow again next year based off how much people loved the stay.
The lodge is ideal for a larger group, families or multiple families, although off grid it has everything you need and more. The lodge is kept extremely well, the hosts are outstanding.
The bird life and walks are like taking you to an untouched world.
Glenfern Team, thanks for having us and look forward to the return visit in 2021.
Cheers,
Joe

The accomodation was fantastic. We hired the House and the Cottage and had the place to ourselves. 9 of us celebrating a milestone birthday. Thanks so much for looking after us, nothing was too much trouble. The Loop track was a major highlight with the swing bridge. Also the lounge was such a great space to share a few drinks with good mates and lots of space to retire to. Can't wait to come back! Thanks again

We were a group of 13 friends having a 60 year reunion on the glorious Great Barrier Island. Glenfern Sanctuary had everything we needed and some. Christine hosted us and was so willing to assist in every way. The Sanctuary is exactly that - a sanctuary, comfortable beds, plenty of space for peace and quiet or a group celebration. Would also be a wonderful place for a family gathering or a wedding. We were very happy in this idyllic location.
