Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Shoal Bay estate is more a B'n'B or lodge than a hotel. Val and Francis make you very welcome in their home. Comfy beds, lots of good food. Great place from which to watch the bay. Island Gin on the verandah with the sun setting over the Bay. Kaka and moho pereru about. Snapper out in the channel. Loved the fresh fish, new laid eggs and the packed lunches. Learnt lots about vacuum cleaners from Val :)!

Val and Francis are the consummate hosts of this idyllic and homey estate. Situated across the rural road from shoal bay, their home exudes a country lifestyle complete with chickens, cows, molly the cat (we have allergies and never noticed a thing), and breakfasts and dinners that melt in your mouth. Val and Francis feel like folks who just open their home to strangers because its the type of people they are—warm and welcoming. We stayed there as a result of booking with Tuatara Tours who chose Shoal Bay Estate as our accommodation and Walking Legends as our tour guide on the island. We would highly recommend all of these organizations based on our experience. Some considerations: rooms share a bathroom which was fine with us as we were all friends and have traveled together often. Food is served family style around a big table with help-yourself portions. Meals may be indoors or outdoors depending on weather conditions.

Great service! Car was dropped off to Claris Airport, ready for us on arrival. Car was comfortable and well maintained. We dropped the car back to the airport on departure, couldn't have been easier! Thanks Val!

If you don't want to spoil your trip, stay away from Shoal Bay Rentals. They ask 100% advance and thats it. You are stuck with their poor service. Val from this company had arranged a car at the airport but that car was nowhere to be seen. She wasn't contactable either. Nor do they have anyone at airport/ferry to sort any issues. 2.5 hours got wasted in trying to contact her. I reached her office spending 60 dollars from my own pocket. Her office was closed too. Finally I took a car that was parked at her office and spent 30 dollars on fuel to fill it up. This car had worn-out tyres and kept skidding while driving. Till date Val has neither apologized nor reimbursed me my 90 dollars. Worst experience ever!

Thanks Val and Francis for looking after our group this past week. I had good friends over from Canada and we wanted to give them the perfect break and your place was spot on! A stunning place you have and so well maintained. Val your breakfast’s to go, lunches and dinners were crazy fresh....it’s worth going just for the salad and homemade sausages! Francis thanks for running us about and the great bbq skills! We will be back! All the best. Roly

Thank you Val for helping us out with a rental car in the high season at short notice. We were able to get around the island safely and easily and when we come back we will be sure to visit you again.

The owners, Val & Francis are very warm and hospitable. They ensure all guests are well cared for. The beds are comfortable, views amazing and the property is lovely. Lots of interesting hikers were coming and going while we were there. This made for a very interesting and enjoyable stay.

My girlfriend booked a trip to Great Barrier for my birthday and we stayed 2 nights at this amazing place. The hosts were super friendly, the meals were absolutely amazing and the accomodation was perfect! We had our own private little wing at the back of the property which suited us really well. The breakfasts were stellar. So much food we didn't need to have anything else till dinner time. The island was amazing. Our rental car was such fun to drive around the island (be careful with gas as the price is quite a lot higher than on the mainland!) and we loved that everyone we passed would wave. Amazing hikes. Amazing people. Amazing beaches. Totally fell in love with the island. Will buy land there in next few years and live there one day :)
