Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I honestly couldn't have wished for a better start to my New Zealand adventure. The accommodation was super clean, had everything you might need and was situated a couple of minutes from the beach (which was practically empty). Mark, the owner, was not only a wealth of knowledge and local contacts but also a great cook and delightful company.

I'd recommend Medlands Beach Lodge to anyone visiting Great Barrier Island.

We were so fortunate to spend time at Medlands Beach at Marks lodge. The room was well equipped with views out to the beach. Mark indulged us in epic breakfasts every day and nothing was trouble. He shared local knowledge which was so helpful and most of all we loved our first trip to Aotea - the ‘Barrier’!

Medlands Beach Lodge is THE place for you if you are looking for quality private accommodation right across from one of the marvellous beaches of the island (perhaps after hiking some of the amazing trails and staying in huts - nice contrast ;-). Mark is a fabulous host and will cater to your every need (he picked up our non-hiking gear from the airport for us as if this was the most natural thing to do, so we could go and hit the trails right after arrival). His B&B offers spotlessly clean en-suite rooms with excellent beds, ample ‘communal’ space (you will ever only share with one other set of guests), and a hearty breakfast that sets you up for the day. Couldn't be better.

P.S.: if you need to get from A to B on the road: hitching a ride is very easy on Great Barrier, and a nice way of meeting people. In more than half of our attempts, the first car stopped and picked us up (2 people). A very friendly place.

Lovely place on medlands beach. Beautiful house with amazing views. Rooms were spacious and had all you needed. Breakfast was awesome and Mark accommodated all needs by even making our kids pancakes.
Mark goes over and above to make sure all needs are meet. We really appreciated his help on our trip. Best house on the island, recommend to all.

Awesome spot and lovely hospitality. Highly recommended with two great rooms. Best breakfast I have had in years with specially baked breads. White sandy beach and a great morning running track. So good 💪

My partner and I were lucky enough to spend a weekend here on Great Barrier Island. What a beautiful place! Mark is a fantastic host, great for a bit of background info on the island or just for a chat. We were very spoilt with cooked breakfasts every morning and wines in the evening.... We got a lot more than we had expected! Medlands beach is the perfect location too, and probably the most beautiful beach on the island and great for swimming! All in all we both highly recommend staying here!

We stay at a lot of B&b's and Medland Lodge is right up with the best. Absolutely five star. Mark is friendly and conscientious. The breakfast is to die for, the view from the room is amazing and everything is just as you want it.
We stayed at Soffitel before going over to the Island and would rather stay at Medland Lodge a million times before going back to a 5 star hotel.

The location to Medlands beach and the stunning view from the room was a highlight .
5 Mins from the Airport
In my opinion the place could do with some TLC, and was not as clean as I would expect
Bed was a bit hard .
Would have appreciated fresh towels at some stage during the stay
Host was very accommodating and arranged rental car at the airport for us

A surprise long weekend away found at staying at Medlands Beach Lodge which is located on a superb part of the island 10mins from the airport and 10mins from Tryphena. The lodge itself as nice but could do with a clean as the ants and dead flys were a bit off putting as was the dirty full rubbish bin and smelly tea towels in the kitchen. We also would have appreciated some clean dry towels from time to time. Orla the housekeeper was very friendly and helpful and a friendly face at the Irish pub.
