Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Due to cancelled flight we (4 of us) needed a place to stay overnight. Such short notice Robyn was more than accommodating offering options of bunk rooms with share bathroom facilities in seperate building or proper houses. Both solar & generator power & gas califont made it very comfortable with tv & hot water while weathering the storm.. Lovely hosts - would definitely recommend.

Our flight was cancelled due to bad weather and we had already checked out of our organised accomodation. We rang Robin who warmly welcomed us and allowed us to view all the accomodation options. We chose Villa 1, a Lockwood type two bedroom cottage with beautiful sea views. The beds were very comfy with clean linen provided, even the pull out couch got a great review as a comfortable bed. The cottage had everything we needed and loved that the hosts Robyn and Malcom were onsite. They had recommendations of where to eat and shared some history and stories about island life. Would definitely recommend this as a great place to stay.

This was my first trip to the island and I'm completely blown away by it's beauty and it's friendly locals. I stayed the night at the backpackers in Villa II and it was clean & tidy with lots of room and not a bad view. It's a short distance from the beach and the owner Robyn is really lovely and is as laid back and friendly as they come. I can't recommend the backpackers and the island enough. Thanks again!

Our nine day stay at the Medlands was magic. From the very first day, when Robyn & Malcolm greeted all 17 of us with a friendly smile, the service they provided was first class. Set in a farmland environment, the villas and the bunk rooms are well furnished and comfortable. The views are magnificent and the atmosphere was very relaxing. Various BBQ are available at various locations and the communal kitchen for the Bunk rooms was well equipped. Toilets and showers very clean and well maintained. The proximity to shopping, restaurants, Galleries, airport and services is a plus. Also the central location made travel easy to both the Northern and Southern end of the Island for hiking. Robyn also offered us a guided tour of local gardens and is a wealth of knowledge about the island, what to do, where o eat and good walks. We will always stay there when we travel to the Great Barrier. Raf Walking Club of Victoria

Robyn & Malcolm were wonderful hosts and create a wonderful relaxed atmosphere at the backpackers. The room I stayed in looked out over the ocean and was very relaxing. They were really great with giving pointer and where to go. I would recommend the backpackers to anyone who was looking for a chilled out stay on the island. Will definitely be going back for another visit.

Set on a hillside, in the bush with a luxuriant garden, native birds, ducks, chickens, just 10 a minute walk to the most amazing beach and coast. A communal kitchen/lounge and lots of outdoor furniture for eating (and lounging) outside. Loads of bodyboards provided for enjoying the waves. The hosts Robyn and Malcom are extremely friendly, helpful and efficient. Simple, rustic, natural, friendly and absolutely tranquil. Amazing night stars. Really a beautiful place to be.

We visited as a family for a week and it was just perfect - we had all the backpackers rooms to ourselves which meant that the kitchen area was basically ours too. The location was under a 10min walk from Medlands beach - a beautiful walk may I say - and the surroundings were stunning. Green beauty all around! The accommodation was just right, we all had some privacy but shared room with family members which made it a lot of fun. The family who own the accommodation were also super friendly and welcoming, and took time out from their days to take us on walks and show us around. If I ever visit New Zealand again I would definitely want to go back to Great Barrier Island, and wouldn’t think twice about where to stay.

Thanks to the friendly owners Robyn and Malcolm, after our ferry was cancelled they put us up in their backpackers. There are plenty of rooms fitting about four people and a cool dinning room to hang out in. The relaxed and rural feel of this place is great. Lovely views out to the sea from the property too. Out Duke of Edinburgh group enjoyed the pancakes Robyn made in the morning for us. Thanks for the stay and recommend for a cool spot to base yourself from.

Thanks Robyn, a good place to stay if you are tramping as it is so central to many of the tracks There is a good range of accommodation. We had the bunk rooms which for us as a tramping group was fine. The kitchen area had all you would need to prepare meals. The showers were nice and warm and at the end of a long day most acceptable.

Medlands Beach is a heavenly place on Barrier and this is a special place to stay at Medlands. Beautiful views from the house and the kindest, nicest hosts you could ever hope to meet. The 2 bdroom villa we stayed in was comfortable, clean, great beds and great value - overall - just perfect. Treat yourself and your family. The kids can't wait to go back.
