Detailed Reviews
Our flight was cancelled due to bad weather and we had already checked out of our organised accomodation.
We rang Robin who warmly welcomed us and allowed us to view all the accomodation options.
We chose Villa 1, a Lockwood type two bedroom cottage with beautiful sea views.
The beds were very comfy with clean linen provided, even the pull out couch got a great review as a comfortable bed.
The cottage had everything we needed and loved that the hosts Robyn and Malcom were onsite.
They had recommendations of where to eat and shared some history and stories about island life.
Would definitely recommend this as a great place to stay.

Due to cancelled flight we (4 of us) needed a place to stay overnight. Such short notice Robyn was more than accommodating offering options of bunk rooms with share bathroom facilities in seperate building or proper houses. Both solar & generator power & gas califont made it very comfortable with tv & hot water while weathering the storm..
Lovely hosts - would definitely recommend.

This was my first trip to the island and I'm completely blown away by it's beauty and it's friendly locals. I stayed the night at the backpackers in Villa II and it was clean & tidy with lots of room and not a bad view. It's a short distance from the beach and the owner Robyn is really lovely and is as laid back and friendly as they come. I can't recommend the backpackers and the island enough. Thanks again!

Very helpful, hospitable owners. Comfortable accommodation, it was great not having to take a sleeping bag as ample, warm bedding was supplied. The showers run off solar (no electricity on the island, there are only generators). Water is heated by a wet back on cloudy days. The kitchen has gas stove, fridge/freezer and many plates, pans etc. There is no microwave. Charge phones etc in the kitchen. Food limited and expensive on the island, recommend you take your own. Free Wifi. On the hill, 10 minute walk to beach.

Medlands Beach is a heavenly place on Barrier and this is a special place to stay at Medlands. Beautiful views from the house and the kindest, nicest hosts you could ever hope to meet. The 2 bdroom villa we stayed in was comfortable, clean, great beds and great value - overall - just perfect. Treat yourself and your family. The kids can't wait to go back.

From the moment we arrived to the time we left we were treated like family. Treats like Robyn making pancakes or Malcom taking us Fishing made us very comfortable. Ii don't know if everyone gets the same treatment but we felt very special. The Island is absolutely beautiful and weather you fish ,surf ,canoe or just trek around you wont be disappointed. We were lucky enough to be there for Malcom's birthday and went to the country club to help celebrate. The live music was exceptional and what a funky structure that Malcom actually built. It was one of the most chilled holidays I have ever been on. Make the effort to go to GBI and make sure you stop in to Medland's beach back packer for some great country hospitality

The best words to describe your stay is amazing. They are so friendly and all the basics stuff is there in the kitchen, great beds, clean showers, but the best is the hospitality. I have received all the good tips where to go and they are so helpfull! Great place to stay if you like some relaxing time on a beautiful island.

I was over on the island for three nights and struck gold with staying here.
I stayed in Villa 1 and it was perfect.
The bed was so comfortable i could have stayed in it all day reading a book.
Everything you need for a comfortable stay was provided. Fluffy towels, well laid out kitchen and comfy couches.
I got to met both Robyn and Mel and they made me feel so welcomed. I even got to try some of the eggs from their girls.
The chorus of Tui's in the nearby trees was a bonus as well.
Absolutely perfect place to unwind.

We were in the 'middle house' which is the first of the two villas - well lets just say house because it was a fairly normal house. $150 a night as it's peak season. Friendly and helpful owners. You'll need to use their landline from time to time if you are organising transport or other activities, as cellphone reception is pretty much non-existent in the Medlands area.
The owners and guest houses are around the property which is on a slope, a bit of a walk uphill to get there from the main road, but the payoff is having views across the land and sea.
As you should already know, being fairly small (in terms of people) and remote, on Great Barrier things are not ultra modern, no electricity unless it's solar or diesel generator, goods are expensive, and transport/taxi services can be pretty steep.
All cooking is by gas, right down to doing the toast on something that resembles a cheese grater which sits over a gas hob. Works well enough!
Downsides:
- The house would creek quite loudly and reasonably often at night; not so good if you are a light sleeper.
- Hot water ran a bit low at one stage, couldn't shower properly that time. I suspect that's a result of it being peak season thus many guests.
- Being close to nature, there's a number of creepy crawly things that manage to get into the house despite all the flyscreens. Only one of any real worry was a white tail spider we took care of. I have to say the good news is that there doesn't seem to be too many sandflies around the island.
- even on max volume the TV was a bit quiet
Overall we were very happy and knew we couldn't expect things to be as they would be on the mainland. Easy to go down and visit the beach and totally recommend a villa, rather than one of the other options, so you can get the view and the extra space and facilities of a house.
