Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

You couldn't ask for more accommodating and friendly hosts. Nothing was a problem, and with the daily changes Sealink were imposing on us, Marissa and Kevin just rolled with it and made our lives easy. The place was spotless, the meals were fantastic and to have Kaka, Keruru and Banded Rails feeding at arms length was pretty special. Thanks alot!

Went camping with a few friends for New Years and we all thoroughly enjoyed staying here. Lovely owners & friendly atmosphere. Lots of beautiful KaKa’s on the property. We would love to come back & would recommend to others.

We were booked for a week stayed one night. Rooms were moldy. Place is run down. Restaurant advertised is closed. Owner was friendly enough as were the three permanent guest living there . There is only wifi at the office and as soon as we arrived the owner closed up the office as he and the other permanents were off to a party. One redeeming fact they had a friendly dog.

Once again an amazing stay. Kev and Marrisa always pull out all of the stops for us whenever we are over. It's been a while between drinks but still seemed like yesterday. Looking forward to the next trip. If you're looking for luxurious accommodation with 5 star rating then this entire island is probably not for you but if you want to experience something closer to reality on the barrier then the Stray Possum is the perfect spot. Amazing food in an amazing spot it is a home away from home.

Couldn't ask for a more relaxed, stress free environment. If you want to escape the busy city life, do a bit of fishing and just getting to know the friendly locals then Stray Possum Lodge is the place to be. We made an advance dinner booking, (a day prior) and enjoyed the company of Kev and Marissa, fun times. Definitely coming again.

Group of like minded fisho’s wanting a weekend away making new mates and enjoying the company.
The accommodation was basic but very relevant to our needs. The bar and catering that we thoroughly enjoyed was a highlight.
Kevin and Marissa were excellent hosts who went above and beyond to ensure our stay was memorable.
I would recommend like minded people take advantage of this excellent facility.

Don't bother staying here. Not only is it really far from anywhere, but the proprietress is absolutely horrible and treated us like we were unwelcome idiots rather than paying guests. Sometimes at campgrounds you get owners who are a bit surly or stressed out in the holiday season, but this was something else.

We arrived and they'd lost our booking, but instead of apologising she looked at us like we were criminals when we said we wanted to camp for two nights. We paid upfront, but left after the first night because of the bad service and the owners starting up a party in the middle of the (Monday) night involving really loud bogan music coming from the bar and quad bikes being ridden round and round and round.

We love camping and we've stayed in lots of places and can put up with a certain level. Basic courtesy doesn't seem to exist here and they refused a refund or an apology when we explained we were leaving because we found this unacceptable. When we told some locals we were staying here, they said, "Do you want us to recommend some other places?" straight away.

Other staff members we encountered were friendly enough, and it seems like this could be a lovely place to stay if it were a bit nicer. I reckon though that since the owner can afford to be so rude to guests, they obviously don't want your money, so spend it somewhere where you're actually welcomed.

Terrible....

The owner didn't really seem to know what she was doing, which was a shame because the location was beautiful. The place was dirty and very poorly maintained. A 'Worker' that just sat around doing nothing while everything was filthy. Not sure if the rooms/beds had been cleaned they smelt really musty. The worse thing was when we woke to no water....no shower, no flushing toilet, you can only imagine! That's when we left and went to a much nicer place down the road. Really don't waste your money, pay a little bit more somewhere else for a much better experience.

What should have been a great experience was marred by the surly reception, zero cooperation and unclean accommodation. Sure part of it is back packers but it also boasts an affodable retreat in self catered chalets with bedding linen etc supplied. We did not expect to find sand in the bottom of the beds indicating no linen change between guests!! The mattresses were lumpy and uncomfortable hardly "retreat" style. Towels were supplied at beginning of stay one towel between 2 people and no replacements!! We enquired about using the advertised shuttle from airport or ferry but were just given the taxi number. Although they advertise daily transport to beaches etc no offer of transport daily or otherwise was available.

Its a case of take your money - fully paid up before you are allowed to view accommodation - then be treated not only with lack of hospitality and service but down right rudeness. If the owner dislikes her job so much why do it??

And the harbour view advertised - not to be seen, as its no where near the harbour!! So the chances of seeing those whales in the advert are zero!! Be prepared to either walk long distances to meet decent Gt Barrier dwellers, rent a car or pay per head for shuttle.

Although there was a restuarant attached based on our experience with owner (also the cook) we weren't prepared to risk it. Thank goodness for the nice people in Mulberry Grove, Rose Cottage Cafe and Irish Pub who showed true Island hospitality and great food.

"The chalets look alot nicer if your looking for something like that. We stayed in the back packer dorms which were basic, just some bunks in a room, but that did us fine as we were there for fishing, not to be pampered."
