Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My family visited here in summer, and we had an experience that we will never forget. This was one of the highlights of our New Zealand trip for the whole family. The men took a helicopter to a private fly fishing reserve, while the ladies enjoyed a day of amazing horseback riding. The food was incredible, and the staff were wonderful.

This place is truly wonderful. It's like staying at some remote rich persons estate for a few days! The land is amazing and truly breathtaking. If you are in to hunting and fishing this is the place for you. Even if you are not there are still plenty of activities, horse back riding, foraging, walking. They have a cute little camp lodge or a house or the lodge itself to stay at. The staff are friendly accommodating and it really does feel like you are staying with friends.

My husband and I visited for 4 nights with 3 days of the most amazing fly fishing with the excellent guide Dave Wood!
The accommodations were superb and the food fabulous!
Top notch facility in a breathtaking vista. We caught Browns and Rainbows! Our guide paced us well for our abilities.
Nice communal dinners after a day on the river.
Highly recommend!

For many years I heard about the excellent trout fishing in New Zealand. The fishing at Poronui exceeded all my expectations.

Despite some heavy, unseasonal rain my excellent guide, Duncan McDonald, was able to get me three days fishing on the many headwaters around Poronui. The waters were crystal clear - sight fishing with a dry fly for large wild brown and rainbow trout yielded fish ranging from 3-7lb!

My partner enjoyed the many other activities offered by the lodge including guided walks and horse riding.

Like many of the very best lodges and hotels, the team at Poronui - led by manager, Eve - were outstanding! Always a greeting, a smile and some offer to improve our stay. The lodge rooms, food and wine were top notch.

One piece of advice - include an additional budget for helicopter flights to get to the most remote fishing. It's worth every penny!

Superb hospitality, comfort and cleanliness are all givens at Poronui Lodge where we stayed for 4 nights in February. As well as this there is the close attention to detail - all members of the team go the extra mile in terms of anticipating guests' needs. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, they create an informal and welcoming atmosphere without compromising standards of service. We enjoyed a wide variety of fresh, beautifully cooked and presented meals, served at the communal dining table. It was fun to spend time getting to know the other guests and to hear about their activities during the day, as well as swapping travel stories.
My husband Peter was fly-fishing (he will post his own review), and there were plenty of activities for me to choose from as a non-fishing guest. I went on a half-day hike with guide Elisabeth and her dog Bracken. I am not a seasoned walker and Elisabeth chose the perfect level of challenge for me to enjoy the breath-taking scenery, pointing out all the different types of wild deer, birds and vegetation along the way, and telling me about life in New Zealand.
Another highlight of the stay were the two introductory riding lessons I took with Tracey and Jane, trainers at the Poronui stables, and Texas, a beautifully calm horse for me as a novice rider. They both went out of their way to help allay my anxieties and enabled me to enjoy very happy first horse-riding experiences surrounded by the most stunning landscape.
We spent one night under canvas at the Safari Camp - a luxurious camping experience. Despite being in an isolated beauty spot by the river, 12kms from the main lodge, we were well looked after by the Poronui team. We had a wonderful three course meal cooked by chef Maggie, and toasted marshmallows on the camp fire while waiting for the stars to appear.
Like people at the very top of their game, the team at Poronui make it all look effortless Highly recommended for anyone looking for first class hospitality and outdoor activities in New Zealand. I would certainly love to return!

My wife and I stayed at Poronui for 4 nights in January 2017 and both had an amazing time. I had 3 days fishing with my guide: the expert and very patient Grant. I have fly-fished for 40 years, but this trip surpassed anything that had gone before. I was lucky enough to land 17 beautiful, strong fish in the 3 days in the wildest, most beautiful locations imaginable. The brown and rainbow trout are truly wild and an unforgettable experience to catch. Thanks Grant!
The hospitality and warm welcome we received at Poronui was exceptional thanks to Eve and her amazing staff, who made sure that my wife and other non-fishing partners also had a wonderful time. With hiking, horse riding and spa facilities available on-site and nearby Taupo and region to explore there is much for the non-fishers to do.
The food and wines were also plentiful and delicious. Fine dining after fishing is a real treat!
Our lodge was private, extremely comfortable and finished to the highest standards.
We can't praise Poronui enough and can't wait to return.

Poronui Lodge was one of my favorite places we visited in New Zealand. We have been on the go for 2 weeks and we were finally able to relax. We fly fishing for two days with Duncan. Duncan was THE BEST! We are not experienced fly fishermen and he was very patient and very good. We loved his sense of humor. We one part of the lodge to ourselves with our own cook and a sweet young lady to help line everything else for us. Massages, skeet shooting etc. We were able to fish all day and come back and relax and unwind in the afternoons and evenings. I can't say enough good things about this experience. It was over the top great.

The absolute finest flyfishing and guest ranch we have enjoyed in 35 years. 5 stars in bush food and wine is 5 stars and the guides and staff feel like family after two days. Non Anglers are equally at home with multiple activities for all the family. We plan our return as we write this!! Big fish and bigger hearts dwell here in old world subtle sophistication without pretense

An absolute must do for all New Zealanders to get back to the tranquil reality of exploration.
Top rate facilities and service from the staff we encountered, Eve, Elizabeth and Chris was excellent. We were made to feel like family friends and nothing was too much trouble.
Our party of 18 (10 adults and children aged from 5 to 18yrs) experienced a wonderful 70th birthday celebration over two days.
Would definitely recommend and will return.
