Detailed Reviews
We have lived in New Zealand for 18 years and have never experienced hospitality to the level which Poronui offers. It is so classy but in an understated kiwi way, both in terms of welcome, service, accomodation, food and of course the best trout fishing in the world!
Claire, Lisa, Steve and Dave were all so professional, welcoming, relaxed and really made an effort to get to know us in the three nights and two days of our stay.

Staying at the Safari Camp is a luxury experience like no other.
The roaring of the Mohaka rapids is magnificent & soporific
You're on your own, but you're well looked after, with menus that you cook yourself

I can’t say enough good things about Poronui. The staff is amazing, the property is fantastic, and the service is exceptional.
My husband and I stayed for 3 nights. The food was delicious. We went heli-hiking, fly fishing, and clay shooting.
Our fly fishing guide, Craig, was so patient with me. He was a great teacher! We both caught a rainbow trout.
Our hiking guide, Lindsey, was so fun. They flew us to the top of a mountain, and we hiked down and had lunch at their Safari Camp. So beautiful!!
I can’t say enough good things about this place and these people. Eve and Claire are fantastic hosts!

Like all the other reviews we agree fully that it was an excellent experience all around. the location and the meals are amazing-but what really made Poronui such great experience was the staff. everyone works together in an easy comfortable way to give the best experience possible and you feel like your staying with friends.
we came specifically to ride horses for a few days and it was by far the best riding experience we had in NZ. The horses are kept tuned up mentally and physically, they are immaculately groomed and a true pleasure to ride no matter your riding level. we rode in very windy conditions and passed endless wildlife popping up all the time and the horses were solid, no spooking.the tack is great quality and well maintained. they offer you, the rider , anything you might need - boots, chaps etc...AND long Dryzabone coats for riding in the cold & rain, which we were very thankful for. Jenn, the riding guide was great, quite experienced and a calm rider with a fun cheerful personality. she was a pleasure to ride with for hours at a time. Management, Eve & Claire, have both been a part of Poronui for a long time and have helped to grow it into what it is today- and they are horse women so they make sure their riding program is top notch.
we stayed at several other luxury lodges on our travels through NZ and Poronui was for sure my favorite. The property offers endless places to ride and we didn't get to them all so i look forward to our next visit.

Delighted you enjoyed your riding experience at Poronui despite the June weather. I agree the Dryzabone coats are winners. Cadbury and Texas and the rest of the team are now out on grass for a couple of months. More adventures next time, see you then.

Sightly outside of Taupo, the Poronoui Lodge is the paradise for the people looking for a nature retreat ... the boutique lodge offers a wide range of activities including fly fishing of course, hunting, horse riding , mountain biking, hiking, honey tasting and much more!
We did experience the hike with Elisabeth which is passionate about nature and knows a lot. We did spot many wild deers on the huge property.
The Honey tasting is really interesting and made me love honey again ..!
When it comes to the Food, Steven, the skilled chef, will prepare the food in front of you based on your wishes. We had a wonderful dining experience pairing with the local wines.
If you are more extreme than us in term of nature, they also offer to the guests a Safari camp which appears to be more a glamping experience close to the river!
I would suggest to spend a minimum of 2 nights on the spot in order to really experience the lodge and surroundings.

Poronui is all about excellence coupled with relaxed quality and very personal service. The fishing is outstanding by world standards. The accommodation is comfortable, spacious, and altogether fitting for a first class lodge. The food is outstanding, not in the sense of silver service or fantastic experiments in chemistry, but in good honest dishes combining exceptionally fresh ingredients expertly prepared and professionally served. The remarkable warmth and friendly atmosphere brings back regular guests again and again to enjoy the wonderful experience that is Poronui.

We went to Poronui as two couples, and had a first-class experience. Everything from the food to the fishing was top notch. Eve and her team are superb. I should have written this review six months ago right after we left.
