Bannisters Port Stephens has been applauded for its exceptional cleanliness and scenic location near the water, aspects that significantly enhance guest experiences. While the stylish, beach-themed rooms are often appreciated, some guests have noted that noise can be an issue. Opinions on value and the hotel's atmosphere are divided; the latter due to the loud music played in communal areas. The comprehensive amenities, including a luxurious pool and quality dining options, are frequently highlighted, although there have been occasional mentions of inconsistent service at the restaurant. Overall, the hotel's service is generally celebrated for its friendliness and professionalism.

This is absolutely the best accommodation and best value for money in Port Stephens. We were two couples staying for three nights in July on level 3 looking out to the bay with a massive share terrace. Breakfast delivered to our room was terrific. Rick Steins was up to its usual excellent standard for dinner and even the Cheeky Dog was good pub food on a reduced menu. Multiple Hand sanitizers on every floor, in every lift - full credit to management who are taking Covid-19 precautions seriously. The staff are wonderful dealing with a difficult situation.

Our family of four really enjoyed our stay here. The rooms are bright and airy, modern decor and very clean. Breakfast was ok, during COVID times so I see that it is difficult when having to deliver breakfast to every room. Easy check in process, super views, pool looked amazing although too cold for us to go in in August. We will be back in summertime for sure as a great area and lots to do with kids.
Didn’t like the bathroom toiletries, please move to a brand that is made in Australia....

We absolutely loved our stay at Bannisters Port Stephens. It’s a perfect and tranquil location that is only minutes away by car to many touristic locations and beaches, so there’s so much to explore and never boring. From checkin to checkout, everything was impeccable. Due to the continuing Covid-19 situation, the management took every precaution to ensure our safety, including delivering our continental breakfast to our room each morning. All staff were friendly and very professional, and we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Rick Stein’s restaurant. We thoroughly recommend Bannisters to anyone wanting to get away either just for the weekend or longer. And it appears even pets are welcomed here!! Just beautiful!

There’s no doubting the stunning location of this remodeled former Ibis (I think) motel. And the first impression as you enter the foyer and gaze out to the infinity pool with the beautiful bay beyond is indeed spectacular. The rooms are comfortable but somewhat basic considering the price we paid ($400 a night for a standard room with an obscured water view). Was surprised with the lack of amenities in the room compared to places we have stayed in recently. A few sachets of instant coffee and a couple of teabags in a styrofoam cup (see pic) are more reminiscent of basic country motels. A small container of milk sits alone in the minibar & you wouldn’t want to both need to use the shampoo & conditioner as there was just one tube of each. It leaves a feeling of stinginess to be honest. We ate at Rick Steins restaurant which is absolutely stunning in decor. The service was impeccable, the food good but the fine dining prices are completely unjustified (felt the same way at Bannisters in Mollymook). Having eaten some spectacular meals in the Hunter Valley on our way here at nearly half the price, you get the feeling that you’re paying a bit for the Rick Stein brand.

Dear ladymuriel, Thanks for the feedback. We are lucky to be in such a beautiful part of the world and delighted to hear you enjoyed the facilites and stylings! I'll have a chat with Martin, our Guest Relations Manager, regarding the in room amenities. Our offerings have been adapted to the evolving situation as we prioritse health and safety. With that said, important we keep focus on the overall experience and don't compromise unnecessarily. Sorry for the shortfalls and any disappointing impressions. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience from the get go. The hotel is undergoing some changes due to Covid but many of the bad experiences could have been avoided.
The rooms are nothing but an old motel (the old ibis) with a bit of fresh paint on it, small. And no privacy on the balconies, literally none. It’s awkward, people can hear every word and you can see into people’s beds. Bathrooms are very nice except ours had an off smell in it so we complained and asked to move rooms. They offered us a worse room on the bottom floor with no view (although we paid for a room with a view!). At least they offered.

Now, breakfast was served in the room because of Covid restrictions which was annoying, because the trollies would ran past your room from 7am and wake everyone up. I get no buffet, but in the room with no table to eat on was weird and uncomfortable . But the worst part was the food Wow, I’ve had hospital food which has been better. Airplane would be an upgrade. An rock hard white roll, an over boiled egg and no plates to eat off. What’s so hard about putting a piece of sourdough and some avo together and avoid this whole mess.

Next - were woken up in the middle of the night because of a false fire alarm. These things happen and I’d rather an alarm go off, but no one came around to tell us if it was a false alarm. Or if it was safe to go back into rooms so we had to rely on the words of our neighbours. All in all an unorganised mess at 2am in the morning m.

Rick stein is a draw card here and we ate there which was the saving grace.

Lastly, the check out experience was awful as we waited 30 mins for them to sort out the bill. Accidentally overcharged us $100 and tried to offer some compensation for our stay which no one could work out so spent the extra time waiting when all we wanted to do was leave.

Overall - ignore the pictures of the beautiful pool area, it’s used as a distraction for the motel that it really is.

Dear shellykaay, Thanks for the feedback. When it rains, it pours! Disappointing to hear your experience left an underwhelming impression. There have been challenges during the reopening but I'm sorry to hear your stay was compromised throughout. Encouraging to hear the team extended a gesture of goodwill and offered alternative options where available but I'll be sure to follow up ASAP, to reaffirm our service standards and expectations. Hopefully we can ensure these are isolated incidents. Appreciate the lovely feedback on our Rick Stein restaurant and I do hope you enjoyed your time in Port Stephens. Best Regards, Pete Bacon

Bannisters at Port stephens with Rick Stein restaurant is generally a great getaway and has been enjoyed by us on several occasions previously. The staff are always friendly and helpful and the location superb.
Rick stein restaurant and the Cheeky Dog pub remain normal or full service food offerings however this stay saw a curious and hugely down graded change to breakfast being served similar to economy class aircraft with food being basic to the extreme with NO choices and no hot items being offered- delivery was of a set cold breakfast on a tray to rooms. Now I understand about covid and operate my own hotel as well as I have experienced several other different hotel's versions of 'covid era' buffet breakfasts in the past month which worked quite well where staff do all the serving of different and varied breakfast choices. Bannister's management really need to seriously reconsider these breakfasts as they are a total let down on a quality getaway stay

Dear stephen d, Thanks for the feedback. Always nice to welcome back guests and great to hear you enjoyed the majority of your return visit. Certainly some challenges with our 'reopening', breakfast a pertinent example. I'll follow up ASAP with Martin, our guest relations manager. Important there's consistency across the entire offering and we address any shortfalls in delivery. Sorry for any disappointment caused. Hoping we can host you again in the future and reaffirm a more positive and typical Bannisters experience. Best Regards, Pete Bacon

The staff at Bannisters Port Maquarie are absolutely amazing! From the moment drove up to reception we were greeted so warmly, staff helped unload the car, they took the kids bikes/scooters/surfboards to a store room, they took our bags to our room. Each day staff asked the kids names, engaged with them and built relationships with our family. We spent days by the pool, down at the shore and exploring the area. The food was a highlight, the continental breakfast - was THE BEST BREAKFAST spread ever! even the kids were in heaven! We ate at the terrace bar a couple nights with the kids - they loved the food and colouring in. Cocktails were amazing too! We also ate at Cheeky Dog on level 1, another great venue! We will be back - there is no need to travel the world when this is on our doorstep! Thank you to the whole team!

Bannisters is in a lovely peaceful setting, with a little beach you can walk along at low tide. We needed a few days away, just to relax. My husband had booked 2 nights at the full price, for a king bed room on the upper level, facing ocean. It was lovely to wake up with the morning sun rising over the water. Bed was very comfortable and room, quiet. However, for the price, the room was pretty basic, with shower, small balcony. Basic tea and instant coffee provided. Because of the whole 'staysafe', it also meant that the continental breakfast included was delivered to the rooms, but for large eaters, the amounts wouldn't have been enough. Luckily, I'd thought to bring some extra plunger coffee, cheeses and crackers.

My boyfriend and I stayed here.
Whilst it is known to be one of the nicer places to stay when visiting port Stephens. I would agree with the poor reviews.

The good aspect are as follows:
•friendly staff;
•staff listen to instructions i.e. get your more beach towels if you request it;
•good location (if you have a car);
•champagne or bubbles on arrival;
•pop up Mexican restaurant called Julio’s
•they have option for pet friendly rooms.

Negatives are as follows:
•definitely not luxury, more like a 3 star hotel;
•excessive cost for what you get;
•no one to take your bags to room, you have to do this yourself;
•the continental breakfast is very disappointing, only full cream milk available for coffee unless you pay extra, you get yogurt, fruit bowl and cold ham, bread tomato and cheese for breakfast , I have had better meals on Contiki trips and other budget accommodations;
•there is no undercover car park for guests;
•no valet parking, I witnessed 2 guests having an argument about a parking spot;
•looks like painted motel from outside; and
•the interiors I.e. the couch had faint stains.

Probably get more bang for your buck if stay in an Airbnb.
