Detailed Reviews
Totaranui is pristine, beautiful golden sand, clear water, lush bush and walking tracks in all directions.
The Dept of Conservation campsite is basic in keeping with the environmental values of the area. Cold filtered drinking water is plentiful, and also cold showers and flush toilets, cleaned each day.
There are a huge number of campsites, all close to the beautiful beach.
I stayed two weeks, walking, kayaking, fishing, swimming and paddleboarding. Paradise!

This was the first time we decided to take the 12 km grit road into the DOC campground at Totaranui. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather. I can imagine that when the weather’s not so flash that it could be pretty miserable. There are no lounges or cooking areas under shelter ~ or power for that matter, so people bring their own. But, no generators allowed. The cold showers were okay after a warm walk on the track. We noticed most regular campers had camp showers that they left out all day in the sun (with no sun, no hot shower). The facilities were working fine, just a bit rustic... but hey, you’re at a beautiful beach. There are old fashioned laundry wringers, which encouraged us to do some washing. The views are pretty fantastic, especially if you get the first spots. The setup of the different lettered bays doesn’t make the place seem massive. Also, the campsites are ample (just having come from Kaiteriteri). If possible you’ll have to take a kayak or a boat or something to get out on the water... although there were lots of locals who’ve been bringing them for years, who may just let you borrow a kayak or take a seat in a boat. Many of the campers seem to know their neighbours, or are at least friendly. And, on Christmas Eve there was a sing along, complete with handouts with the words on them. Certainly a memorable festive experience. We liked it so much we stayed an extra night.

Perfect place for a holiday with a group of friends. went there for new years and had an amazing time. the beach was absolutely stunning and campground was so convenient, right on the beach. Beautiful weather and crystal clear water. only downside was when i was leaving and had to leave at 7am in order to catch a flight in nelson, completely forgot about the hours of the front gate and tried to get out when it was locked. we found a DOC worker to open it for us but he was very unnecessarily rude!! he was yelling & basically telling us we were stupid for not reading the sign that was on the other side of the gate that we would’ve only noticed over a week ago when we arrived!! it was just a small accident and it was no way for someone to treat anyone!! we were happy to pay the fee that we read about on the notice board as it was our fault for not remembering but this DOC worker’s attitude was so poor and disrespectful and wasn’t having any of it, he needs to learn to treat people with more respect especially since it’s his job and that’s what he signed up for when applying for the job!

This is a busy popular site over the summer break.
Tips
Plan to book as soon as bookings are open. They sell out quick.
Think wind, when picking a site.
Bring solar water sacks.
Great for water sports
Great safe estuary for high tide swimming.
Bring a saw for fire wood cutting.
Cover up in the morning and evening to manage sand flies.
Bring bikes for around site
Shop thinking packaging, as it will reduce what you need to bring out.
Have a small compost bin. They collect it.
Have fun

One of the most beautiful places you can stay in the Tasman area.
The road to get there is perilous and some drivers are just plain stupid on it (I had someone pass me when I pulled over at a narrow corner for oncoming traffic! We all gave them the finger for that!!!) so take your time as its steep windy and only gravel.
The campground itself is so amazing, there are so many spots to use and it is spacious yet private with all its hedge lines and protected from the wind in all directions. The weka are pesky but you get used to them. The toilet and shower facilities are amazing.
I only wished we could have stayed many days longer

+1
The was a beautiful campground and, when we visited in April, not at all busy. The beach is amazing. There are picnic tables and bathrooms, all the basics, plus an information center to advise about hikes, etc. We hiked up over Gibbs Hill an retuned via the Abel Tasman Track, a day hike that I would 100% recommend.

Large campsite with plenty of amenities, all well maintained. Right on an amazing beach, and a good location to spend the night before starting the Abel Tasman Great Walk.
Very busy during the Christmas / New Year period. During this time it would be nice if the sites were pre-allocated / numbered. We booked well in advance but still had to drive around the whole camp to find a spot for a small 2 person tent!
No issues with noise during the night.

Stunning part of the country at New Zealands's largest DOC camp. This camp can cater for 1000 people but around 800 seems tops…and you'd never know that many people were there. The sites are cleverly designed in bays with running water in each bay and an open fire where you are provided with wood which makes for a lovely way to the end the day. The ablution blocks are cleaned every morning and some have solar lights and are tiled…pick your bay wisely! The showers are set up to hang your solar shower and conveniently located in every bay. Because this is part of the Great Walk as well, trampers have their own handy sites available almost right on the beach. No cellphone signal which makes for a total relax. There is a boat ramp which is hugely popular with boa ties but is really on accessible on appropriate tides. DOC run a wee shop for essentials since its half an hour over a really narrow, windy road to the nearest shop. Pay telephone boxes are available too which is very important to book your water taxi to visit the other bays or to bring you back home after walking a section of the Great Walk…or to take you somewhere nice for lunch if spaghetti on toast is proving a bit tedious. You used to have to ballot for space over the busy time but I believe this is changing for the 2014/15 season allowing you to book online as soon as bookings are open. Check their website http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-stay/conservation-campsites-by-region/nelson-tasman/golden-bay/totaranui-campground/

You can choose your own campsite, lots of space and toilet facilities are A+. No hot water but lots of drinking taps around. You can light fires and the beach has beautiful golden sand and cystral clear water. Also rubbish dumping stations.
Lots of cheeky Wekas and Pukekos running about, so keep food and rubbish bags high, and always close tents as they love running inside.
We went for 4 nights and ran out of milk so pack lots of uht if you have kids. We took 4 litres.
Campshop that stocks chocs, ice, insect repellent a little bit of milk.
Dont forget a strong insect repellent. The one that worked for us was Tui Balm spray brought from the Doc shop. Aeroguard did nothing.
Gravel winding rd fir 20mins, but absolutely worth drive.
Next time we will go for 7 nights!

A beautiful and idyllic location in clean, well maintained camp grounds with ample toilets and cold shower facilities, managed by local rangers by day.
We loved kayaking around the coastline to quiet secluded bays with sandy beaches.
(Watch the Weka, who will steal your food from your tent).
We stayed 3 nights here and never slept for any of them.
We were subjected to a mass of under age schoolies drinking to excess with loud music and even louder swearing, noisy campers partying and/or chatting to all hours of the morning with no regard for any of the fellow campers alongside them. Enough is enough!
Sorry, no place to get any peace and quiet, which is why most people come to a reserve like this.
If you want to stay up all night, stay home or go to a private farm where you don't disturb other people.
