Monte da Cunca is situated in the beautiful Algarve on the South West coast of Portugal. Nestled amongst the Alentejo and Vicentine Coast National Park we are surrounded by untouched sand dunes, beaches, forests and hills. Whether you desire peaceful strolls through eucalyptus forests, bike riding along unspoilt cliff top coastline, surfing at some of the best beaches in Portugal, or reading a book whilst gently swaying in a hammock, the possibilities at Cunca are endless. The apartments here at Monte da Cunca have all been lovingly restored by hand, keeping elements of the traditional Portuguese heritage with mud brick and stone walls. They are made from natural resources such as stone, clay, reed and eucalyptus.Wholesome, organic produce is provided, fresh from our gardens. A short walk away is the village of Carrapateira where you can tempt your taste buds with locally prepared, traditional Portuguese cuisine, or enjoy the local daily market. Picturesque Aljezur is 19 kms to the north which also has many restaurants and an abundance of beautiful beaches. If you are in need of more breathtaking views, Lagos is approximately 30 kms away, as is inland Monchique and stunning, cliff top Sagres.Monte de Cunca is the perfect place for sharing quiet moments, relaxing in tranquil surroundings, and spending invigorating time close to nature.

Carrapateira is one of the towns through which Rota Vicentina passes. Looking for accommodation after my hike, I found this place.
It may be close to the highway but the sounds from the road were few and far between and I slept well the one night I stayed. The self-contained unit had 5 beds but I had the place all to myself. I didn’t even have to wear the ear plugs that were provided by the owners.
So much detail, craftsmanship and creativity went into building this country retreat. The woodwork, stonework and design are beautifully rustic and charming.
I wish I stayed more than a night to just enjoy myself in this haven and appreciate the work done here.

Monte da Cunca is a wonderful place to stay - the stone building has been lovingly restored using natural materials and the quality of the woodwork is great. The interiors of the apartments are quirky and artistic, truly original. The apartments are well-equipped with everything you need for self catering.
There are only 2 minor downsides, one is that the apartments are right next to a road. This is a real shame as it does affect the tranquillity when you are sitting outside on your verandah. The other point to mention is that the beds are not the most comfortable and they are also very creaky (the walls are pretty thin so you can hear your next door neighbours moving around too!). However, these things did not affect the enjoyment of our holiday.
This part of Portugal is lovely - it is within the national park and the beach at Borderia is one of the beautiful beaches I have ever seen. There are acres and acres of natural sand dunes - you can walk for hours just working your way through, and the beach is massive. Because it is so big it is easy to get a quiet spot away from other people. At the far end of the beach are very discrete areas which are used by those wanting an all-over suntan! Being the Atlantic, the sea can be a bit cold, but it is very exhilarating! Waves are huge and it was windy every day of our holiday - the Kite surfers took full advantage of this and were great fun to watch.
The owners Klaus and Dania were really friendly and helpful and you can go to their farm just down the road to get fresh vegetables which we did! There are full recycling facilities too, and the local village (Carrapateria) is just a 15 minute walk away. The village has a few shops and a couple of nice bars/restaurants. We had a lovely meal in one of them.
We did without a car, but all the other guests did have cars as it is a little off the beaten track. However, it is do-able by public transport. We travelled from the UK, flying into Faro airport then taking the train to Lagos (1 hr 45 mins, 7 Euros) and then getting a bus to Villa do Bispo (1 hour, 3 Euros). We then got a lift from the owners to the apartments (20 mins away).
Finally, a mention for the nice barman at the bar which we stopped at several times on our way back from the beach - you make a mean Mohito!

Our stay at Monte da Cunca was far too short! The apartment was lovely, as were the people. We loved the outside seating area and above all the location. Right in the heart of the natural park, the area has beautiful beaches, a freshwater lagoon leading to sand dunes, a nearby lake, hiking paths, quaint villages... It has it all. And I will definitely be back! Thank you Klaus and Dania!

We stayed a week in monte de Cacuna and that was enough. Although we are very nature minded and animal friendly (Vegan & Vegetarian) we did not expect this. We had the smallest apartment Buddha for 40 euro's a night in September (too expensive in hindsight).
The apartment is small and that is not the problem. However it is really close to the road. Since this is a main road cars are coming by constantly with +40MPH. Relaxing on the "patio" is not so relaxing after all.
Additionally there are some street dogs and cats. We actually like this and bought food for them because they seemed pretty hungry. It is nice to see how voracious they jumped on the food. The downside was however the animal droppings on our "patio". Maybe if we did not feed them this could have been prevented. Anyway....
Regarding animals....At day two we had an ant attack in our appartment. Two ant streets were travelling through our aparment. We had to use a line of poison in front of our apartment to keep them out. Something that was not well received by Klaus. On our patio we also had these big ant nests and since I did not like them crawling over my feet I used some of the poison outside. By leaving the apartment he told us his opinion about this. In short: if you want to sleep with the poison on your pillow that is your decision, but don't use it outside because it harms the environment.
Well, I can see now why he thought we were sleeping with poison on our pillow. Every evening we had to clean the top side of the bed (pillowside) because some white dust came down every day. We were not able to determine exactly were it cam from but we guess it was part of the ceiling.
All in all a cozy apartment which is a bit too expensive. Would not advice anyone to book their holiday here and we will not return next year.
PS. I just checked the photo's online and I believe that they are a bit outdated.

Thanks for your feedback. We do try our best not to interfere with nature and sometimes that means living alongside creatures that are not always comfortable, but we are taking your experience into account and trying to work out a natural way to move the ants on for the comfort of our future guests. We´re very sorry that Monte da Cunca didn´t meet your expectations but hope that we do have a chance to host you again one day. Sincerely, Klaus & Dania

Monte da Cunca is a place where you can find relaxation. In the middle of a beautiful nature-reserve the small clay-houses are located perfectly: The surrounding landscape is full of colours and the beach is only a short drive away. Also the small village of Carrapateira is only a ten minute walk away.
For surfing you can find two beaches close by and several others in the south and the north. If you like hiking or running, the hilly hinterland behind the apartments is perfect for it.
The houses are renovated in a traditional Portuguese style and look very pretty. They are very special and unique, designed artistically with loving attention to detail. Each house has a kitchenette and a bathroom. They are appointed with everything you need, including towels and bed sheets. You can also rent surfboards and wetsuits from the owners.
During the holiday time there is an Italian pizza maker visiting monte da cunca twice a week, to make pizza in the wooden oven. A very cool event.
Monte da cunca is just beautiful and when you finally have to leave again you will find yourself totally relaxed and looking forward for the next visit to this pretty spot.

Hi,
we did not actually stay in Monte da Cunca, but in a house very close in Bordeira that Klaus also rents. That house was very, very cosy and extremely beautiful. It is also has a crazily well-equipped kitchen (spices, pans, ...) - with the availability of excellent vegetables from Klaus and superb fish, it makes for fantastic cooking sessions. It also has a fireplace. We have been there in March and since it was a little cold from time to time so it was great to be able to heat up the place. Klaus was nice enough to provide some wood. Yay!
I think there is enough info here about the greater area. Bordeira, Carrapareira and other places around are stunningly beautiful and there is not much tourism going on. So it is great for hiking, fishing and surfing (I guess). It was way more luxurious than the places we usually stay (and easily sleeps 4 - 6 people) but we enjoyed the luxury and especially the beautiful immediate surroundings.
It is a beautiful 1.5 hour walk through a small pine forrest or a 10 minutes drive by car to the beach.
Thanks Klaus! We will probably be back.
PS: I share the dislike of ant poison. There where some ants in our house as well after some days, but after we started to clean the table carefully after every meal, they went away. More work, but better than poison.
