Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

This is a rustic campground but in a great location. The unique kombi cabins and the boat cabins are very clever.
We didnt us the facilities as we were in a self contained camper so i cant comment on them.
We turned up at a very busy weekend without booking. the camp mangers were so helpful. And generously gave us a couple of batteries for a remote we had.
a storm hit lake taupo but this campground was sheltered and in a great location.

This is a lovely, well run campground right on the edge of Lake Taupo. We stayed in the retro Kombi van. They have tea, coffee making facilities, heater, double bed, TV, bedside tables and a deck with table and chairs. Plenty of room for a couple. The camp itself is well equipped with a kitchen, laundry, showers and toilets and a playground for the children. There is also a small shop at the office with ice-cream etc for sale. The managers are very friendly, helpful people. The only negative is the hot water in the communal areas is scalding hot, perhaps a little dangerous.

Such a relaxed, clean and friendly camp. Gerry and Pauline (the very hard working) campground managers are the best with lots of local knowledge, and a cruisy attitude. This would be the cleanest ⛺️ campground I’ve ever visited. The marina is a great backdrop, with Lake Taupo just steps away. Easy to pass this gem on SH1, but I highly recommend a stay. Just an FYI…turn the showers to full hot, and adjust as the hot comes through! Always something quirky in campgrounds!! Thanks Gerry and Pauline, and good luck on your next venture……….just in case you do read this!

This looked a nice place to stay beside Lake Taupo. I booked directly off the website but many of the facilities listed for the kombi option were not provided. I had to ask for a kettle, no fridge, no flat screen TV, no kitchenette. There were mistakes on the website so be carefully what you book. I was told the owners were away and the person checking me in was helping out. The camp kitchen is not well equipped - you need to have all your own gear. Lighting in the kombi is very poor - can’t read without a headlamp. On top of all that there was a storm and the power went out. Not their problem obviously.
Still waiting to here back on a discount on what I would label a ‘false and misleading’ description of facilities.

My partner and I stayed at one of the Kombi Vans for a night (the orange one). The van was converted beautifully in a quaint and well-thought of way. It had a double bed, two bed side tables, a TV, kettle, heater, an electric blanket and coffee/tea. Each Kombi has a deck by the front door with a table and a couple of chairs.
Since we stayed during September, it was 70NZD.
The kitchen and bathroom are shared facilities and were in very good condition, clean and well equipped.
The park is situated just by the lake and wharf and great for an evening stroll.
Turangi is a five minute drive away with petrol stations and a supermarket (new world). So the location couldn't be more ideal.
Would definitely recommend this place if you're passing through the area.

If you are needing a place to stay near Turangi or Taupo then I would recommend the Motuoapa Bay Holiday Park. It is peaceful and right by the Motuoapa Bay Marina. I stayed in a cabin shaped like a VW campervan, but it is actually bigger than it looks and very comfortable. The staff are friendly and facilities are basic but adequate.

For dinner you can cook in the shared kitchen, or go to Turangi or the Challenge service station - which has good takeaways.

We stayed in the Retro Kombi Cabins, which is a unique experience. We are very excited. It is very clean, it has complimentary coffee and tea, TV, a heater, and it is double bed. There is an adjoining deck where you can sit outside while enjoying the view of the lake. The holiday park has some shared facilities like kitchen and toilets. They are really clean. I love the modern interior of the Kombi while keeping it's retro design at the exterior. Very unique experience, its like stepping back in the hood old day. We will definitely come back with our family so they can experience it too.

We booked a motel unit however I would describe it as a cabin or a large caravan type trailer but certainly not a proper building. Therefore its cramped and a large person would not fit in the shower. It was however clean and met our purpose for the night. The location is great as just by the lake. The little gas heater would not ignite. Overall a bit disappointed.

Had a great overnight stay at the Motuoapa Bay holiday camp. The camo has a wide variety of accomodation to suit all types and budgets. Opted for a combi in the end. It was fun, clean and perfect for a night. Heater kept it nice and warm too. The shared facilities are very clean and tidy. And the views over the lake great on a moody August morning. Highly recommended if you’re passing through.

This park is lakeside, and perfect for a quiet getaway. We stayed 3 nights while getting to know "Nola" our Motorhome. Lake front sites are cool, but we got breezy weather so asked to move further back after one night. It was not a problem. The facilities are dated and need upgrading but are scrupulously clean, and I am fussy. For us a wonderful stay. The hosts were fantastic.
