Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This place has its own private beach, perfect for a swim or just to relax. Outdoor bath is a highlight. Beautiful gardens, especially the roses. Jude and Roger are excellent hosts and the meals are great.

This is NZ marine wilderness at its most sensational. You are in it. The experience and knowledge of hosts Jude & Roger made our stay truly special. We were lucky enough to enjoy a trip to French Pass on the beautiful "Celine" with Roger taking us through one of the worlds most dynamic stretches of water. Thrilling. Watch out for spectacular landscapes, tunnels, caverns and the wildlife, you never know. Plenty of accommodation and other options to choose from. We devoured Jude's amazing food using bounty from the neighbourhood, but you can also do your own thing.

Our small family spent 2 nights in the seabreeze cottage in April 2012. The cottage is private and comfortably appointed. Breakfasts and dinners held in the main house were delicious and a wonderful opportunity to meet the hosts and learn more about the area. Roger cooked the most delicious fish caught specially for us. Our toddler was quite taken by Roger, the friendly dogs and the wonderful toys which were available for sharing. We loved the seclusion and natural beauty of Ngaio bay. The bath on the beach is a must.

Ngaio Bay homestay is tucked away in a little bay on the way to French Pass. The setting is glorious, in a beautiful garden with a private bay, surrounded by sheep-dotted hillsides.
We have had two heavenly holidays at Ngaio Bay with our three boys (all under 10). We felt so comfortable and relaxed with Roger and Jude, and their two lovely, gentle dogs. We went on walks over the fields, played on the beach, went to see the swirling waters at French Pass and ate and ate Jude's wonderful home-cooking. I can't think of anywhere more lovely to spend a few days.

This really is an experience from the start onwards. The long twisty road in from Rai Valley, wanting to stop for endless photos of the views. A final slightly scary descent, best in AWD vehicle, the isolation, peace, lack of TV/internet (available in the main house) and great cooking and company of the hosts. Sunsets, views, private beach and outdoor bath. You will never visit anywhere like it.

We were away on a 2 year belated honeymoon and wanted somewhere really special to spend valentines - Ngaio Bay was it in spades.
The drive in itself is incredible - you head up the french pass and just keep going. The twists and turns all bring you round to ever more incredible views and an awesome sense of wilderness.
We stayed up in seabreeze cottage on the hill which had the most amazing views down to the private bay. From our bed you could see the sunset and then the moon set (something we'd never seen before but will now never forget). Add to that the brilliant Sassy their labrador (she'll chase sticks all day!), mussels picked straight from the bay and fantastic home cooking and it all becomes pretty perfect.
Jude and Roger were brilliant hosts who epitomised everything Ngaio Bay stands for. They were generous, kind, great fun and moreover had an intrinsic knowledge of the place in which they lived and a love for their way of life. Thanks you for sharing it with those of us who hurry along all too often with our eyes shut to everything around us.
We left after an incredible (sorry for all the adjectives but they are well deserved!) trip out with Roger in his boat and a super bath down on the beach whilst fireworks were let off overhead.
Ngaio Bay is a place that stays with you - our hope is that as life gets ever busier back in the UK we are able to retain some of the perspective and calm that spending two nights there gave us - it gets in your soul and that's where we want it to stay.

Like the previous reviewer, we dream of Ngaio Bay now we are back here in Japan where it is not possible to find any such location or way of resting and relaxing. The weather was perfect and so was the food. Roger took us on a boat trip and indulged my passion for photography to the full. But it was the perfect peace and quiet that I will never forget.

This was the favorite B&B of our trip. It is a long 2.5 hour drive from the nearest cities, but the scenery is worth it. Dinner was included (there's nowhere to buy food nearby), and it was the best food we had in New Zealand: delicious meats and veggies. We walked for several hours along the rocky beach, right off their property. Beautiful and relaxing! The room was comfortable, with great views. It was pricier than other places we stayed at, but worth it, especially with the dinner included.

We (myself, husband, 4 year old daughter and 2 year old son) stayed here last November. It is a truly magical place. Our room was cosy rather than luxurious but this fitted with the wonderful feeling that rather than being at a B&B you are actually staying with friends. Roger and Jude were fantastic hosts, we greatly enjoyed meal times where we got to find out about local stories and had a real insight into what living in such a remote and beautiful part of the world is like. The fire bath on the beach was just heavenly - you almost had to pinch yourself to believe you were somewhere so beautiful. Oh, and the self composting tiger worm filled toilet fascinated the kids! A must stay if you are in this part of the world and worth every minute of the 2 hour drive off the main road to get there.

Just been there this week. The cottage is open plan. The double bed is in an alcove off the living area and there is a wide, long ledge across the other windows which easily sleeps 2 others. Good facilities and finishings are excellent. Jude can cater easily. Remember that this is a remote area so take supplies as the nearest shop is over an hour away and has basic stocks. Gas cooker, full electrics but no internet or TV. Spectacular place, peaceful, the hosts are good company for meals. The main road is a good surface but unsealed for last 12km. The turnoff down to Ngaio bay is narrow and twisty with some big drops to the side which makes it feel like you are on a real adventure. Do not go past the cottage unless 4wd and overall preferable

"Wifi is only available in the main house, not the Seabreeze Cottage. It's a steep walk down to the main house for breakfast and dinner but Roger offered to drive us up if we wished. But the view from there is wonderful and well worh it. There is a real sense of seclusion."
