Our trip to Sacha lodge was simply amazing. Starting with their guides meeting us at the Coca airport, then a 2 hr motorized canoe ride down the Napo river. Then, a 20 minute hike, then a 30 minute canoe ride to the lodge. We saw 2 different types of monkeys just on the canoe ride to the lodge! At the lodge, the rooms were nice. one wall was a giant window looking out on the rain forest. There is purified water throughout the lodge (but don't drink the tap water.) The food is all prepared with purified water, so everything is safe. Some of their literature warns you not to flush toilet paper, but the plumbing must have been updated, as we weren't told that and never had a problem. As for excursions, they were all a mix of walking and canoeing. The Lodge provides rubber boots and you'll need them pretty much every time you go on a hike. They also have ponchos, if needed. Our guide, Luis, was also our naturalist. He could explain literally everything about the forest. Identifing birds by their calls and unerringly pointing the telescope he always brought in the perfect direction and finding a 3 inch high bird 100 meters away in a tree. He could also discuss the plants the indigenous peoples used as medicines. We saw about 30 different types of birds, especially beautiful toucans, macaws, and parrots. We saw 4 different species of monkeys, as well as sloths. Luis was a pro at taking pictures from our phones through the telescope. We got some truly amazing pictures of wildlife. We also did a night walk and found humongous spider webs, stick insects, and more. Not to mention massive kaipok trees, but Dragon's Blood trees, and massive Royal Palms that look like they are straight out of jurassic park. A true highlight was the canopy walk in A series of three 130 foot high towers, spaced about 100 yards apart, connected by two (very safe) metal suspension bridges. If you're afraid of heights, maybe skip this, but we had a beautiful view of the forest. A thunderstorm started when we were up there and watching and listening to the rain was magical, followed by the forest coming back to life once it stopped. We happened to have a guide just for the two of us, but in general groups are no bigger than 6 people, so you have lots of attention. The experience at Yasuni National Park where 2 indigenous women discussed their life and offered us roasted yuca, hearts of palm, plantains, and roasted grubs(if you dare. (I didn't)) was wonderful. The parrot lick cliff was very cool, as well. Nearly a hundred parrots, parakeets, macaws all in the same place. The food was also excellent at the lodge, especially at dinner. All-in-all, Sacha Lodge was a truly remarkable experience. We spent the 3 nights (2 and a half days) there, which was perfect.

The SASCHA LODGE in the Amazon was an AMAZING add-on to our Galapagos trip, and we couldn't have been more IMPRESSED!!! My husband gifted me this trip for my 70th birthday. I had a list of fears going into the jungle (hahaha), but one by one, were magically erased. We credit our FABULOUS GUIDE, CHRISTIAN (Chris), who made us feel safe and kept us moving forward from one FANTASTIC ADVENTURE to another. Chris was born, raised and educated in Ecuador, and generously shared with us his vast knowledge of the Amazon. We remain extremely GRATEFUL to have him to ourselves, making us a party of three. During our five day stay, we enjoyed multiple THRILLING EXCURSIONS, whether it was into the impenetrable jungle or out on the water, canoeing. We were ASTONISHED by the BIODIVERSITY of the AMAZON. We saw hundreds of bird species, three types of monkeys, one sleepy sloth, river otters, and innumerable interesting insects, including the one-eyed butterfly. We were educated about EVOLUTION and SURVIVAL of the FITESS. We were introduced to the WALKING PALM TREE and many medicinal plants. Fortunately, we didn't have to dial up the Shaman. Our room was GORGEOUS, with floor to ceiling glass, looking out into the jungle. We appreciated the air conditioner and were never without filtered water, provided by hydration stations throughout the property. Our room was squeaky clean and very comfortable. The cuisine was EXCELLENT, I especially liked their lunches, which were vast and varied. The manager was very personable. We credit him for running a tight ship, ensuring the safety and happiness of all the guests. We could have easily stayed longer, WE LOVED IT that much! We plan to return. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! ~Ann Goforth

When I saw the hotel online, everything looked great. But it was a totally different story when I checked in. The room was horrible. There were gaps in the walls where insects could get in and mold in the sink and in the shower. The pillow cases were dirty and I had to put a towel over them in order to use them. There was a major gap under the front door and I was terrified that a dangerous spider, tarantula or snake could get in. I could not sleep for the 2 nights I was there. The manager didn’t seem to care. I think that they actually overbooked and put me into an employee room. I contacted Sacha’s office in Quito and they didn’t seem to care at all. I contacted the manager Guillermo Zaldumbine and I never got a response from him, but his admin told me that there was nothing they could do for me. The 2 worst nights of my life were in this hotel.

It takes some time to get here from Coca by long tailed boat, then a 20 minute walk followed by being are canoed through to Lake Pilchicocha by your naturalist but that is all part of the adventure and not a problem. Pack your rucksack with any essentials you may need as luggage goes to the lodge by other means. Sacha is a lovely lodge spread over quite some area. Some rooms were quite a walk from the main reception area and the lake. Our room was huge with a balcony looking out onto nature which allowed for wildlife watching. It had a separate toilet, shower room overlooking nature & a double sink area. The hotel provides you with wellington boots which are often needed and ponchos if you need one. The naturalist we had was great the younger Fausto and very knowledgeable. We did nearly everything we could in 2.5 days. You do not come here for a rest if you are interested wildlife! If you have a specific interest then please let your naturalist know and he will be very forthcoming with knowledge. I never had breakfast as they were too early for me before going out on excursions. Lunches were buffet but plenty of tasty choices and dinner a set menu which was good. Let them know in advance if any food allergies or dislikes. We were on an adventure holiday in Ecuador and this was the 1st part of the adventure!

We just left Ecuador yesterday on March 27th, and arrived to the US today after spending 3 nights and 4 days at the Satcha Lodge. We had just spent the prior week in the Galapagos Islands, so this was certainly a change in scenery for our spring break family trip. The flight from Quito to Coca airport is about 30-35 minutes, but the drive would take 8-9 hours due to the curvy mountainous terrain, so flights are preferred. Once you arrive into Coca, a representative of Satcha Lodge will meet you and drive a short 10 minute distance to the main office, located along the shoreline of the Napo river. Once a few more documents are signed, you take a 2 hour motorized boat ride downstream the Napo river until you arrive at the Satcha Lodge property. From there, you hike in about 20-25 minutes, and then paddle in a canoe for another 25 minutes through a channel and then the main lake, before arriving at the very picturesque Satcha lodge. This place is literally WAAYYY out there in the middle of the Amazon. The entire place is run on generator power, and bringing supplies in and out of the lodge is quite the feat. Yet, the accommodations are very luxurious despite its location, hot showers, clean and filtered drinking water, and almost no critters inside the rooms. We rented two villas that are connected by a covered outdoor living area; one for our 3 children (ages 17, 14, 11), and one for my wife and I. It turns out Will Smith rented this exact villa about one year ago, with many of the guides and staff having pictures alongside the famous actor to prove it. Each group is assigned a guide for the entirety of their stay, and the groups can be no larger than 5-6 maximum (since that is the capacity of the canoes). Larger groups will be split up with one of the 16 guides available at Satcha Lodge. Our family had the extreme pleasure of being assigned our guide, "Dorian." Dorian is one of the 4 guides who comes from the indigenous Kitchwa (spelling?) tribe that lives in that part of the Amazon. Dorian studied English in Quito for 5 years before coming over to Satcha Lodge, and his English was excellent. He has a great sense of humor with the kids, knowing how to keep things fun and entertaining, all while showcasing his vast knowledge of the Amazon rainforest. His background of growing up as part of the local tribe is invaluable, as he showed us the various plants used to craft tools, provide medicine, and also construct a wide variety of items that are used for survival in the Amazon. He also has the 6th sense of simply "sensing" the jungle, spotting the craziest wildlife with just his eyesight, but then zeroing in using his spotting scope. Our family had been to the Serengeti and Masai Mara a few years ago, and I would put his wildlife spotting capabilities better than some of the best guides in Africa, especially being able to do it in the dense Amazon jungle. While there are set itineraries that are available to all the groups, there is certainly the opportunity to modify the itinerary to your family's preferences. Expect to start your day early (all itineraries start at 6AM, sometimes earlier). You do normally get the late morning to relax poolside or in your air-conditioned room, as well as the early afternoon to just chill and relax, before starting another activity usually around 4pm, and then sometimes even night walks or canoe rides late at night after dinner. The STAFF at Satcha Lodge are EXCELLENT. One of the main managers at the lodge is Jose. He literally made our stay so incredibly pleasant and wonderful, the trip would not have been the same without him there. The food is very good, but my kids are also picky eaters and have always had trouble finding something to eat whenever we travel. Jose could sense this immediately, and had the chef prepare some of the best spaghetti, chicken tenders, and pizza (off menu of course) that we had during our visit in Ecuador. On the first day, my youngest daughter picked up a bad stomach bug (which was probably from some street food in Quito the prior day) and couldn't go on the activities for the day. Jose had a special tea prepared and brought to the lodge, and made sure every one of her needs were met while she stayed back in the room by herself. She was as good as new the next day. Overall, I got the sense that ALL the staff at Satcha Lodge treated you as a special guest, whether you were Will Smith or just a random traveler. I could also tell that preserving the Amazon rainforest was their top priority, and their love and pride for their home was clearly evident through their sustainable tourism program. A couple things: 1) There are LOTS of bugs. Like a LOT. Our family had done some pretty remote traveling experiences in the past, but this one definitely takes the cake. Bring insect repellant, wear long clothes that will hug tight around your wrist and ankles, and long breathable socks. I preferred quick drying long-sleeved shirts with a hoodie. Don't forget a wide-brim waterproof hat. Even then, I suffered lots of bites to my hands and ankles. The lodge has very nice long rubber boots for you to borrow, and also waterproof parkas that are available for use, so no need to bring those items. 2) Bring a really high-powered, strong flashlight. I had packed a 5000 lumen flashlight for the trip, which made a big difference on our night walk and night canoe rides. 3) Don't forget your binoculars. Costco has a great deal on Vortex Diamondback 10x42 binoculars that normally run $250 at Dicks Sporting Goods, but Costco is selling them for $150. 4) Bring lots of cash. Standard tipping for the guides is $20 per person per day, and also the same for the staff (so total $40 per person per day). The staff split all the tips at the end of the month, and the guides keep all their own personal tips. While they had told me that Satcha Lodge was trying to go "cashless", and also encouraged me to pay the gratuity with a credit card, this option never presented itself, so I ended up just putting cash into the tip jar for the staff, and tipping our guide directly. Anyways, there are so many other things I could talk about that are available at Satcha Lodge (including the amazing 100+ foot tall tower with a 940 foot long suspension bridge), but you can certainly read some of the other reviews or even better, just check it out yourself. You won't be disappointed.

We have just left Sacha Lodge having spent the most incredible 4 nights/5 days. We had high expectations, and we were not disappointed. The adventure starts when you leave Coca and whiz down the river on the motorized canoe. Then a short (20 minute) hike from the river to meet your guide and your first paddled canoe ride to the lodge. The squirrel monkeys were bang on cue as we were paddled down the channel to the lake, and the noisy river otters were waiting by the lodge as we arrived, followed by the squirrel monkeys outside our room almost as soon as walked into. We spent many hours exploring the jungle with the most phenomenal indigenous guide (Dorian) - hiking and in the canoe. You start your activities the day you arrive and everything is planned meticulously. We went for the wildlife and we have come away not only having seen things we had only dreamt of seeing, but with the knowledge shared with us by Dorian we actually have an even deeper appreciation not only for the jungle and its creatures, but also for the people that live here. I could go on and on about how amazing Sacha Lodge is - but my advise would be if you are reading this… just go. You won’t be disappointed.

We stayed 4 nights at Sacha Lodge. It manages to make you feel safe & civilized deep in the Amazon. The mornings are early and the jungle is hot, muggy, and buggy but you have long midday periods to rest in comfort and clean, air-conditioned rooms with jungle views. The WiFi was oddly very rationed (max 2 simultaneous logins per room) and required logging in after brief periods of inactivity, but was actually quite fast and reliable (could stream video easily, even with a VPN, and I measured it at 80Mbps). The food is good and they were accommodating of our picky children with pasta and pizza options. We were the first children in months- the main demographic seemed to be retirees- but our children had a very good experience. The guide you are assigned makes a huge difference since you are with them all day, on at least two excursions, and is hard to control. By far the highlight of our experience was our guide, Geranio. He was extraordinary- a local Quichua who grew up in the jungle in an indigenous community 20 minutes downriver but who had studied for 5 years in the United States. He could literally sense things in the jungle- in the pitch black one night he “felt” a tarantula nearby and turned his flashlight directly on it. Another time, he stopped mid sentence having sensed energy nearby and pointed out a sloth that was almost impossible to see, camouflaged on a nearby branch. He could spot birds on branches hundreds of yards away. He delighted our children, especially our 5 year old, with his ability to craft anything from the jungle, making a backpack out of palm leaves, fashioning crickets, millipedes, and canoes while we walked. He was fearless- picking up “bullet ants” and letting the crawl around his hand, while other guides watched. We felt very lucky and Sacha Lodge is lucky to have him.
