The biggest thumbs up for Lazy Dolphin is its location-right on the beach where Hector's dolphins come into the bay to play in the summer, and a short walk to Curio Bay where the Hoiho, yellow-eyed penguins nest. I felt lucky to be able to access wildlife literally at my doorstep. The hostel itself has beautiful large sunny rooms and a friendly host. There isn't much by way of food or supplies, however, so stock up on the essentials before you go down there. I stayed there for two nights with my partner but would happily return for a longer trip.
I stayed at the Lazy Dolphin back in July and had an amazing stay. I arrived on my own in the middle of the winter season. I hadn't prebooked but the staff was very helpful in getting me in and settled. It was one of the cleanest backpackers I have stayed in, and the beds were extremely comfortable. It was just a quick walk from the beach where you can see the penguins and the Jurassic forest. Was a very relaxing evening spent in a beautiful place. I did go back to this hostel in October, having loved it so much I decided to try again. This time, unfortunately, there were no free beds. The staff was not very friendly this time around when telling us there was no room. Tainted my opinion slightly.
The Lazy Dolphin offers clean and comfortable rooms, with surprisingly comfortable beds. Communal kitchen is well stocked, and location cannot be beat. Glenda is friendly and accommodating as well. We only stayed for a night but would be glad to make a return trip anytime!
Wild, wild weather outside but cosy inside the Lodge with great views of the beach and rocks. Very friendly manager. Our upstairs room rocked in the wind but very snug inside. The kitchen has great view of the bay. Just a short walk along the road to visit the yellow eyed penguins and the petrified forest. This is a great place to visit - as far south as most people would ever get.
