We booked the 2 bedroom for one night (many to break the drive between Dunedin and Queenstown, but did want to see the Catlins). This place is a dream. The room itself is fabulous, as well as its location. I regret we only had 1 night, and we learned that booking policy was changed to minimum of 2 nights since our time of booking (we booked a year in advance). If we return to the south island (and expect to) we would certain do 2 nights here. We were traveling a two couples, and the 2 bedroom apartment was ideal. Both bedroom are large, each with king bed. The bathroom was connected to one of the bedrooms, and the other entered from the hallway (which was fine) and the toilet was in its own room at end of hallway. The kitchen and living room was HUGE and comfortable, with a deck deck and million-dollar view.

Wonderful and unique setting, short walk to the beach which is a superb view from the accommodation. It was amazing to see Hectors dolphins playing in the waves.
The accommodation was excellent and well appointed, and we particularly appreciated Kimberly’s help in accessing the laundry, especially as there was a water shortage at the time.
There was some confusion about our second night’s booking and we negotiated splitting the cost in the interests of both parties. Much appreciated!
Curio Bay is a must see. We did miss the yellow eyed penguins but maybe we should have waited longer as darkness descended.

Stopped here on our way down to Dunedin and enjoyed our time. Our accommodation consisted of a large modern room with settee and king bed and kitchen area. It's right on the beach so access is quick and easy and walking along the beach is great. We came across a sleeping sealion at the back of the beach too! Wonderful views out across the water. Internet speed was good @ 24Mbps / 29. Large bathroom with strong power shower. Kitchen has double hob and microwave, electric fry pan. Large TV, but channels are poor, however with fast Internet our Amazon Fire stick worked well.

We were looking forward to staying here given it’s rating. We were surprised to arrive and find no one there and a note on the window telling us which unit was ours.

The weather was fine but cold, about 5 degrees outside. While the heater was on there was a chill in the room so we turned the temperature up high however according to the heater it never got past 15 degrees overnight. The addition blanket helped but still a cool night.

A stand alone heater was provided the next day which solved the heating problem which was really appreciated.

While the view is so good, the room was a little disappointing as there were cobwebs in corners and around the ceiling in both the main room and around the window in the bathroom - not what we expected!

We also didn’t expect to have to do our dishes before we left or be fined $25 if we didn’t.

Would we stay here again, probably not!

Lovely stay at Salthouse. Room was comfortable, warm and clean. It was really nice arriving on a windy and rainy day to go into a room where they had taken the time to put the heater on. Easy check in process including a text on the day which was appreciated. Excellent kitchen facility. Fabulous views.
Only downfall, was carpark is very tight and we had a single room on the bottom and unfortunately the people staying above us were very noisy.

Excellent choice to stay, cosy and warm with a great view!! We were lucky to see the snow down to sea level. Natalie couldn’t have been more helpful nor accomodating; thank you so much with your phone calls re the weather to ensure we were ok and had options if the roads were impassable. Cooking facilities suitable to enable us to make our own dinner and breakfast and enjoy them while taking in that view.

The motel is right on the beach. A short walk down a track in the garden and yo are on an extensive sandy beach. A slightly longer walk takes you to the visitor centre and down a DOC path to the fossilised trees where you can walk as long as you like, tide permitting, over the fossilised remains for 200 million year old trees.
Motel room was warm with comfortable bed. Cooking included two hobs and microwave but no oven. There is no nearby source of fresh food. Best bring your own although there is a limited menu at the visitor centre. Fish and chips from a caravan at Waikawa at lunch time, and next food is at the Whistling Frog about 40 min drive away. These places are not open every day.

Salt House at Curio House is in the amazing Caitlin’s area a short drive from Invercargill. It is well appointed & right on the beach in a remote & wild natural area. We loved the fresh air & walks along the long sandy beach. It was only a short walk to the 160+ million year old petrified forest and a stand of beautiful forest. We were thrilled when nesting parent penguins returned at 4.15am to feed their young! It sounded as if we were in the middle of the colony!
We missed the Curioscape VisitorCentre which was open only Wednesday- Sunday but had been able to source a lot of information before our visit. It was a really memorable stay which I would highly recommend to others. Many thanks to Melissa.

We stayed two nights in March 2019 as a couple and two adults. The two bedroom, two bathroom apartment was very clean and quiet, comfortable, spacious and modern. The apartment has a full and well equipped kitchen, a large balcony and a fantastic view. Note that the apartment is upstairs. No surprises as it looked just like the photos on the website. Could not have asked for more - loved it!
