I had an unsettling feeling this January. What had I forgotten to do? What was it that I'd missed? Who was it I might have upset with a careless word, or even worse with silence? As soon as the festive cheer had faded into 2015, it became clear. I hadn't remembered to post up a review of one of the best breaks I'd ever had with my Missus. Many (often kind words) about Villa La Grotta centre around Vlad and Simone (who are fantastic people, and generous hosts), but it would be ridiculous to think that they "make the stay". Better than that, they help you help yourself. Their knowledge and contacts of the local area are second to none. And so the real beauty of this break, wasn't the beautiful vista, the tidiness of the room, the efficiency of the breakfast - it was the opportunity to act like an adult, and with a little encouragement go forth and adventure. We did.
We survived the Italian driving after flying into Pisa (A secret Escapes package), we navigated really weird roadsigns to find the place, and we even got over our first night heebeejeebees (sp) when we arrived late to a dark, deserted hostelry. That's part of the adventure, and although in some ways I wish I had known thats the way the Hotel operates (if only to stock up) I started to behave like a global citizen rather than a mollycoddled tourist.
It's an amazing beautiful Hotel, well appointed, amazing pool and grounds, with brilliant recommendations for truly amazing (and reasonable) restaurants. The local wine is amazing, and once you get feel for it, there are some truly amazing places to visit. Vlad and Simone do not stop - they work so hard, making sure that everything is just so - they give you a lovely clean fresh canvas, but it's up to you to colour it in. You'd be a fool not to take advantage of an opportunity like that, in this beautiful part of the world.
One last thing I have to add is that the car hire company who form part of a truly remarkable deal with Secret Escapes, are really not up to scratch. That said, the two hour wait to return the car to (@Pisa airport) couldn't put a dent in the brilliant experience we'd had at Villa La Grotta.
Thank you Vlad and Simone.

... who needs to go trekkin' accross the universe when Villa La Grotta is here! Let's get to the nitty gritty. This NOT a hotel. The Villa doesn't advertise itself as such but there is no other category to put the review in (so understand what it is offering). If you want a magnificent setting with splendour, a place to relax (with a super-duper pool), an environment that leaves the 21st century behind, then this is it. There's TV and wifi (works great - the wifi is an essential for research and it worked all of the time) and spa treatments available but no hustle and bustle or manic rush of the present day. This is relaxation and a gentle pace of life....bliss. The comfortable accommodation (we stayed in the adjoining 1st floor suite) is spacious and cool during the hot day, with cooking facilities should you want to rustle up some local food, bought from the close-by supermarket (mega friendly). Bed dreamy. The water systems worked fine with good shower pressure. Easy parking too. Vlad and Simona could not do enough, advising where to go and arranging visits, including Denis at Morandi Wine (a must). This is important if your command of the language is not so good, as they speak good English and will go out of their way to help and advise you. Simona is a mean cartographer - drawing out where you are going - a great help. Breakfast was consistently good with a fine variety of food. You do need a car. We survived the Italian drivers and got to Sienna, Anghiari and the Sunday evening parade at Sansepolcro. So the Villas location is good! Major sites being within easy reach. We loved Arrezzo with it's mix of historic and contemporary and the trains are good too (trained it to Florence - tip: validate your ticket on the platform). This was a very special week in September, which my Wife and I enjoyed immensely. The ONLY downside is that there was not a guest area/lounge/room, where one could go back to after a day's touring to meet with other guests and share experiences. As I said, this is not a hotel, so communal areas would not be the norm, but nonetheless, somewhere in the evenings to share, would be a good addition. By contrast, daytime, the 'meeting' place is the fab pool and area around it. Would we go back ? you bet. Would we recommend it ? for sure. Thanks Villa La Grotta: thanks SImona and Vlad. Hope to see you again soon - what's available in 2015??

Only spent 3 days here but glad it was no longer. Previous review said it all, owner wants to be your friend but charges heavily for poor quality accommodation and food. Very much out of the way, there must be better places to stay in this area.
Not to be recommended.

So glad we got out of there after only 3 days. Problems and 'miscommunications' with the room and the travel agency, a loose water tap full of fungus and rotten silicone, an old shower full of dust and hair, a toilet that barely could flush, a breakfast of old bread (cutting through kind of impossible), the cheapest marmelade of the nearest supermarket and no refills of other stuff. An egg was only possible for 'special' Dubai guests. Staff was incompetent, very young and not professional at all. After several complaints about the horrible room that they would fix, they even ignored us and werd very inpolite. A lot of noises at night. Eventually change of rooms, after a threat from the owner 'you be quiet now!', a room right below the famous spa (we never got to see, although we were promised we could see it for 5 minutes before paying about 300€ for 2 hours of spa). Awful sounds during the night, produced by the staff partying above our heads. Seriously weird atmosphere and no hospitality at all. During our short visit, we've met a couple of other very concerned tourists. No way this villa could ever reach good reviews, if you experienced the holiday of hell like they had foreseen for us. So very sorry we sponsored the people of villa la grotta. Please stay away, in any case not worth half of the price they ask.

Unfortuntately this was the worst stay on our 3 week trip in Italy. Once we arrived we were welcomed far too much by promotions of voucher upon voucher .... we were not even interested. We were told nothing about the hotel. We did not get the upgrade room which the hotel had previously confirmed and there was absolutely no apology, just vague excuses which made no sense. The villa itself is so beautiful as well as the rooms but the renovation inside appears to be very cheep. The pool was always full of leaves... bad cleaning. The breakfast was not what you would expect for such a place. The service was unprofessional (never touch a cup or a glass with your fingers on the top!) Wifi only worked at the reception. The place is far too expensive for the quality.

booked 5 nights on travelzoo voucher. upon arriving was told only those rooms in the attic were travel zoo advertised rooms at the rate i was quoted. this was not made clear upon advertising on travelzoo or when bookings were made. clever photography & ambiguous advertising caught me out. although the room was spacious, the widows were almost at floor level & gave no view & you had to climb up 4 stories without a lift for the privilege, quite frankly i would not have stayed if i had been travelling alone, and although i complained, it was to no avail. be careful on booking, insist on knowing exactly what room you are paying for(each has a name) & if you can not see any windows in the room, look elsewhwere, there are plenty to choose from

Dear Mr Paul T., I'm the owner of Villa La Grotta and a great supporter of Tripadvisor because It's a good way to have a feedback on the way we work. We have never replied to any comment even if negative because we think it's important to understand all the point of view in order to improve our services. In this case I have decided to reply because yours are not criticism, but lies. Lies not just on us, but also on the travel agency we work with. Villa La Grotta is an ancient Villa of the late 17th century with many restrictions defined by the Governement Department of "Belle Arti" and we really know that sometimes it can represents a limit. For this reason we always try to transfer all the information in order to set up the right expectations and to anticipate any problem. Information regarding the room and position was clearly stated in the description of travel agency promotion. In addition once you have reserved at Villa La Grotta we have provided these information again. Just for accuracy below I have copied and pasted the email of confirm we sent you: > Here are the details of your reservation > Check in: 11st June, 2013 > Check out: 15th June, 2013 > Nights: 5 > Guests: 2 > Solution: Double Classic Room > Price: Tzoo Voucher > > Classic Rooms are located on the third floor of the villa. > These are all attic rooms equipped with bathroom with shower. > There is also roof terrace, which is shared by the three rooms where you can relax or dine > whilst enjoying the fantastic views over the Chianti hills > > Important: > Villa La Grotta is an ancient Villa protected by the Government > Department of “Le Belle Arti” in charge of taking care of all monumental buildings. > For this reason there’s no elevator inside the Villa. > In the same email we have also attached pictures of the room and proposed an upgrade price for superior solutions. In conclusion, I would strongly suggest you to start to read the content of promotions and emails instead to write to other people to be carefull on their booking, Best Regards.

Just so it is clear, this could either be a 2 or 3 rating. It wasn't an unmitigated disaster but there were some very odd and disappointing features to this place. Firstly it is very far from anything and I pretty much mean anything. It's about 8 miles from the motorway. This isn't necessarily a problem if you have all you need within the hotel. But this place doesn't really have anything.
Forgive me this is not a hotel and as stated above it is simply not a 4 star hotel.
There is no room service, you can't have dinner or lunch as it is not served. In terms of lunch, they serve it sometimes. What this means I couldn't be bothered to ask. They only sell coffee, tea and wine during the day. I did ask for a beer and they had one bottle left !
Breakfast is ok, usual bread, meat, cheese, fruit and cereal. There have been people on here who said that they had the best cappuccino ever. Either they don't know what they are talking about or the manner in which the coffee has been prepared has changed. The coffee tasted as though it came from a machine and the cappuccino was the worst we had ever had. It was black coffee with a foam top !
In terms of what to do, there is pretty much nothing. All you can do is sunbathe and swim in the icy pool. Wifi only works in reception and it is a poor connection. There is a jacuzzi which you are charged for the privilege, it costs 95 euros for one hour which is extortionate. It's a standard jacuzzi outside the top rooms with no view as it is in the roof. There is a big skylight which doesn't add much. There are other jacuzzi "packages" that the hotel offer and the one that made us laugh was the 500 euro package. For this you get to use it all night with one bottle of champagne. Unless you're making a porn movie I don't see why anyone would take up this offer !
The rooms. We were in the attic and ours I think was the best of the worst. Beware. It was very hot, there's no air conditioning but you can use a fan which they provide. Apart from the skylight there are no windows. You can't really leave the skylight open as birds try to get in and due to lack of ventilation it becomes very hot. As it's an attic room, the roof slopes so we were constantly banging our heads. We asked to change rooms and were first told that would be ok the next day and then were told there were no rooms. Also as there are no windows it's quite dingy.
The actual room and decor were fine but it is not a room that you could just chill in. We felt ourselves having to spend as much time away as possible.
The staff were friendly and pleasant. In terms of food and drink around, there was one convenience store and two pizzerias. One was passable and the other was very good. They are a good 15 minute walk down a steep hill. If you want anything else then you will have to drive. This is a bit of a shame as only one person can drink.
All in all this is a nice place if all you want is to relax but do not expect the usual amenities a hotel has and do not stay in the attic rooms !

Response from VillaLaGrottaSt... V, Manager at Villa La Grotta
Responded 6 Jun 2014
Dear Mr. Rabin, First of all I would like to thank you for your review regarding Villa la Grotta. As you can see on the name, we are a villa and not a hotel and honestly we aren’t planning to be a hotel . As you had notice during your 4 nights stay the atmosphere here is not like in an hotel , we like to say to our guests that this is their Tuscany home and we do all our best to make them feel like home . Tripadvisor it’s an important tool for us because is a good way to see how we work and to know where do we have to improve in order to satisfy our guests needs . I believe that your review is rude and I will give you my reasons why I’m thinking that 1.We offer room service , it’s enough to call reception from your room . We do also lunch every day in the beautiful garden and we have the menu for lunch at reception and I can’t imagine how you can’t manage to see it because it’s written with big letters. 2.Regarding the coffee and cappuccino that you say that was the worst ever , I think that it wasn’t that bad since you order every morning 3 coffees each one … I doesn’t makes sense . 3. What makes me really think that your review is rude is that you where so excited to book the SPA aria for you and your wife and by the moment when my colleague show you the SPA with cinema inside and sky view you said “wow” .The next day you come down at reception and said that you want to book the private SPA and once I had told you the prices it became a “standard” SPA didn’t want any more to book it . you had in your room the price list of the SPA and the promotions . The €500,00 package includes two lunches , two 1h massages and 1 bottle of champagne and you don’t have to make a porn movie to take this package ( I appreciate your humor ) , you can enjoy a movie from the Jacuzzi as our SPA haves cinema inside 4 . By the time when you had book with expedia.com , on the website every room haves a description and photos in this way our guests know before how is the type of room that they choose to stay so you where informed what type of room you had booked. When you said you want to change the room because is attic we had look together on my planning and you saw that we were fully booked so it was impossible for us to change your room . Otherwise I would happily change it because the most important thing for me as manager of Villa la Grotta is to make sure that our guests are happy ! 5 . Regarding the position of the villa , we are 12 km from the A1 motorway and we are situated in the heart of Tuscany and I think this is an advantage because it allows you to do daily escapes to the main art cities such as Florence , Arezzo and Siena . Also we are surrounded by restaurants reachable by foot or by car and the village is a 5 minute walk not 15 minute walk ask you said . I’m happy to read that all in one this villa is a nice place to relax and I feel privileged to notice that you made a tripadvisor account just to review Villa la Grotta Greetings from the beautiful Tuscany, Vlad Tudor Aivanoaei

Such a shame that our stay in a beautiful area was spoiled by the staff at this hotel. Unfortunately when we arrived neither the manager or the owner were around. We were led upstairs in the main building only to be told that there was a mix up and then we were led back down and out to an adjacent building. We were told later in the week that this was an upgrade, but not in our eyes. I did look at the rooms the junior suites that we should have been given late in the week, and they would have been so much nicer. I would suggest that you don't eat at the hotel as pointed out by other reviewers the daily menu doesn't change and is food that has been precooked and re heated. When I asked for a green salad I was told that this wasn't possible. So then to the biggest problem which was the temperature of the rooms. At night the temperature was dropping to 3 or 4 degrees, our 'family' room was freezing. The young girl on the desk offered us a blanket ! On the third morning the manager appeared and when asked about heating he blatantly lied and said heating could not be turned on until the village heating came on 15th November. One couple were so cold that they left the hotel early and all guests were complaining of the cold. I persisted and eventually asked that electric heaters be provided. Well surprise surprise there was action in the boiler room and the heat came on in the hotel .Unfortunately not in our room as the radiators then all needed bleeding. When I tried to discuss the poor meal, the lack of heat problem, change of room and iced up fridge with the owner he just shrugged the problems off. Such a shame we were treated as we were , that the reception staff had no knowledge of the local restaurants or could offer information on the expected winery tours. We luckily had an ipad and were able to do our own research. The staff who were on duty were friendly and did their best with lack of knowledge and lack of language .
It is a beautiful area, could be a lovely venue and we did visit some amazing places. Such a shame .

Nice pictures on Internet, nice marketing but sad reality. On the first day of our arrival the reality was not as we had expected. The owner is very well spoken and it seems that's he you're best friend bit the only thing he want's is your money! A lot off hidden cost and sneaky practices.

Dear client,
other than renting a car you can use taxi services from the airport to the villa for a cost of about 200 euros, and from the villa to Arezzo or Montevarchi train station for about 45 euros. There is a local restaurant about 10 minutes by foot if you don't rent a car.
Anyway we advise you to take trains from the airport you are landing into to Arezzo or Montevarchi station, saving money because trains cost less.
Trains to Florence pass every 40-60 minutes.
Hi ,
We are 1h and 20 minutes from the Pisa airport.
Once you had picked up you car you just have to put on your GPS - San Giustino Valdano , zip code 52024 .
A GPS is a must so if you have one take it with you it will help a lot.
Regards,
Vlad Tudor Aivanoaei
