This campground is quite green and the sites are large. However, the constant roar of traffic from the main roads surrounding the camp spoils the atmosphere. Several of the sites seemed to have longer term groups on them, including the one next to us - 2 cars, a caravan and a camper all on one site. This large group, and their invited friends, were quite loud until late. Our hearts sank each time we saw another person arrive with their cold bin of beer! Facilities are ok, paid showers. It's too far to walk into town but you can walk to the beach easily enough. Incidentally, there is a 'freedom camping' at the beach that appeared to be a lot more peaceful and I wished we had stayed there despite the basic facilities.

We stayed at Fernwood Holiday Park over the summer break and enjoyed the campground. Yes this is a camp we would camp at again. Nice friendly management also. The campsites are generous and the best we have seen. Nice playground for children, bird avairy and a generous sized tv room. How ever we do agree with another reviewer that a few things perhaps could be reviewed. This is NOT a reflection on the management rather the backpacker & seasonal worker issue. *The kitchen is way to small for the number of campers to use and twice we couldnt use the cooking facilities and frequently couldnt even wash our dishes due to other campers disregard for sharing the space.(tried one night from 7pm till 10.30pm and gave up till the morning) Perhaps some signage should be placed asking people ensure they 'share the facilities' and clean up after use properly. The management kept them clean and tidy, but some folks have a lack of respect for the facilities. We have stayed at 2 other camps that have undercover outdoor sinks - excellent idea, when all you want to do is the dishes. This could be a cost effective solution for Fernwood . *The other issue was the washing machines, no problem paying for them ,that is a very reasonable thing to expect , but i did object to what was found in them following other folks washing , once we had to remove a full wash of what was a load of grotty cleaning cloths - perhaps from the cleaning team ? that was gross as we wanted to wash our clothes in there. . Lastly the amount of smoking done around the communal block was extremely over powering at times, especially in the 2 outdoor toilets. Shouldn't the communal block facilities be smoke free? Other trip advisor reviews commenting on the traffic noise maybe fair depending on where you are camped , not a big problem really. The location of the camp is good if you want ease of access to the district. Thanks Fernwood.

Response from Judith - Tony P, Owner at Fernwood Holiday Park
Responded 20 Mar 2015
Hi Dominic, Many thanks for your helpful feedback. We recognise that the kitchen does get very busy, hence why we built an island bench last year which has increased the workbench capacity. Your suggestion about outdoor sinks is a good one and certainly one we shall consider. - Alas the list of things we would like to do at the campsite keeps on growing..... We acknowledge that smoking can be a problem in our outside toilets; we have put up no smoking signs but these are often ignored. In terms of the washing machines, we do have to wash the cleaning cloths in the machines, but it could be argued that these are no dirtier than some of the sleeping bags, heavily soiled clothes and training shoes that some campers wash..! Kind Regards, Judith & Tony Peters

This is generally a clean and well run place apart from two problems. 1) The park is situated within a triangle of major roads - the roar of traffic (a lot of trucks and idiots in turbo-charged racing cars) goes on until about 11pm and starts about 5am . No fun if you're in a tent. 2) The kitchen is far too small for the amount of campers who want to use it. Be prepared to fight or a sink a hot plate each afternoon/evening.

Response from Judith - Tony P, Owner at Fernwood Holiday Park

Hi Humberto, Sorry you were disappointed with your room but there is a very explicit description on the website. We do also have rooms with kitchen and bathroom. Not sure where all the noise came from. we live on site and ensure the site is quiet by 10.30pm. (although as we mostly have young families and older couples staying at present, that is not really an issue). The road can be a bit noisy during the day but is usually quiet by 5pm. Afraid I do not agree with your comments about the bathrooms. The bathrooms are cleaned thoroughly twice a day and floors are mopped frequently in between. When it rains, as it has done for the last few days. The floors can get muddy between cleans; which I am sure is a problem at every camp site. Hope you are not disappointed with your other accommodation bookings in NZ. Regards, Judith & Tony Peters

Hosts are weirdos who bullie there guests.Very rude hosts and staff who stare at you like your not welcome. We where talking with a group of international guests at 11pm on a weekend night when all of a sudden the English hosts cut us off and ordered us to our tents and cabins like little children saying " get...get..go to bed now!!" And "shhh, you can't talk!". The woman and husband herded all of the international guests and newzealanders to bed continuously. Threatened myself if I didn't stop talking to other guests that I would have to leave!. The next morning the English hosts went around embarrassing the international guests by telling other guests that they had been told off! They still continued to be rude the following day to international guests by bullying them into leaving exactly on checkout out time. The WiFi is out of date. The staff smirk at you as they clean.this is not a kiwi campground or represents newzealand spirit...at all!! The road is very noisy and peace is few and far between. I highly advise not to camp here as it is not a camp ground but a Looney bin!.

Luka, All Holiday Parks require guests to be quiet between the hours of 10pm and 7.30am. We have over 100 guests at this time of year and we have a responsibility to all of them, many of which are leaving early to go to the Abel Tasman. It is ironic that you were concerned about the road noise (in fact the road is very quiet at night), but you consider loud conversation after 11 pm to be acceptable.... Regards Tony & Judith

we stayed at Fernwood for the express reason of going to a concert on New Years Eve in Riwaka, we had a few drinks around our bunkroom and were advised by the owners that they bus would be outside at set times, after it didn't turn up, we had to organise other means of transportation, they were unwilling to help the 25 odd people staying with them, in fact they repeatedly hung up on people that rung them to ask for suggestions to get the 10ks to where we all needed to be, Not exactly welcoming and helpful. When we returned at 1.30 in the morning, they met us out on the road and asked that we be quiet entering the camp ground as there were families staying, this was a good reminder, and was a great idea, so we snuck in and were sitting whispering around a table, the owner was doing the rounds, one of their residents came past, fresh from the pub speaking quite loudly, wishing us all a happy New Year, we tried to quiet him down at which point the owner came and yelled at us, saying that he as a resident and if he had a complaint about us, then we would be kicked out. he then said that it was time for bed and that he would be turning off the lights and power to our unit in 10 mins. Our Party of 5 and the 2 friends we made at the camp ground were absolutely appealed, we are a group of young adults, some slightly older than others, this does not mean that we are going to be drunken louts It is concerning that they seem to have no problem with threatening to send people packing, fully knowing that they had been drinking, this does not promote safety, if we had been hugely drunken and disruptive, we would have understood if they had needed to take further action, however we strongly believe making us drive off would have been the best choice.
When we raised our concerns with the owners the next day, their excuse was that they are tired and working long hours, they work in a holiday establishment, it is Christmas and New Years, both of these come once a year, it is easy to plan when you know you are going to be busy.
In regards to the facilities, 2 showers for the whole camp ground, which was full is a bit Silly and the kitchen with only two sinks is horribly small.
All in all, we wont be back, we wont be recommending Fernwood to any of our friends and family

We stayed here two nights camping. The plots were well spaced out, amenities all very nice and clean and the wifi as great. It's very rare to be given 1GB of wifi per person per night at campsites, so this was an added bonus.
I'd stay again if in the area for camping.

Pitch next to the road, fumes were so bad that it made me feel physically sick, we could not keep windows open in the van or sit on our pitch. I complained about the noise and fumes and asked if there was another pitch, they said there was no other pitch available. I requested that I cancel the booking as we would like to move to another camp ground / holiday park (we had booked 3 nights), they said its too late to cancel as they had already checked us in. **Checking in happens prior to being shown to your pitch - so you don't know what you're getting until its too late!!
I was refunded 2 nights minus an admin fee of $25 due to: "we would like to charge each of them a $25 admin fee please, (for creating a geat deal of work when we are run off our feet)."
As I cancelled there were people on the phone wanting a tent pitch that night - they filled the space immediately without any issues!! Customer satisfaction is more important - They should look into removing the pitches right next to the road as they are unpleasant and overpriced. We should not have been charged an admin fee, we paid for something that we thought would be at least part of a "holiday", instead it was a health hazard & a sleepless night.
Very disappointing.

We had a fabulous time at Fernwood Holiday Park. There are great facilities including the swimming pool, children's playground, safe trampoline and great t.v. lounge with lots of comfy sofas, games, books and dvds for any rainy days. We helped ourselves to veg and herbs from the communal garden too. The atmosphere on the park is really friendly and Tony and Judith (owners) do all they can to make people welcome and help with queries. The location is ideal with a great restaurant very close by, plus waterside walks and flat bike rides, gym and cinema all within a few minutes walk. The town has everything required - shops, restaurants, bars etc and is only a 10 minute safe bike ride away - and Tony and Judith hired us bikes for a negligible price.
