Lakestone Lodge is exclusively positioned on the southern shores of Lake Pukaki with some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. The off-grid eco lodge has been designed to maximise the panoramic views. Every room and bathroom share stunning views northward over Lake Pukaki to the Southern Alps. On calm days New Zealand's highest mountain, Aoraki/Mount Cook, can be seen reflected in the turquoise glacial waters of the lake. In contrast, mountain storms rolling in over the alps, can be viewed from the comfort and warmth of this luxurious lodge. In the evenings, after watching the sun setting over the mountains, guests can enjoy some of the clearest night skies in the world as Lakestone Lodge is located in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. Lakestone Lodge, centrally located, is an ideal base for exploring Aoraki/Mount Cook and the rest of the Mackenzie District as well as for relaxing and for making use of unlimited photographic opportunities.

Lakestone Lodge receives high marks for its exemplary service, with guests appreciating the staff's personalized attention and the ability to cater to individual needs. The luxurious amenities, including an inspiring restaurant and private gardens, alongside the comfort of the rooms with breathtaking views, contribute to its popularity. Set against the tranquil backdrop of Lake Pukaki, the lodge offers a serene retreat. While the rooms are celebrated for their vistas and comfort, a few guests have mentioned a lack of soundproofing. Nonetheless, the overall value, cleanliness, and peaceful atmosphere are consistently praised, making it a worthwhile escape for many.

Just to give context I am one of the 19,000 on the Extended Visa arrangement.

if there was a tent on the ridge that the Lodge sits on the experience would be outstanding. The view down the Lake to Mount Cook has to be one of the most extra ordinary that anyone can experience.

However you are not staying in a tent you are encompassed in a neat Lodge where every room every common area takes advantage of that view. The rooms are understated so that the view you look out on is everything. You can lie in the standalone bath or stand in the shower and look out at the view. You can sit in the garden or inside the room and enjoy the view.

So its position is exceptional, the Lodge well appointed with all sorts of elements on offer (bikes, helmets poles) but to cap it all out there in the middle of essentially nowhere Mike produces the most exquisite food offerings. He takes all the classic taste combinations, which have been working for as long as food has been cooked and offers them in a sophisticated outcome based on highly developed techniques. Butters are whipped exotically the bread melts in your mouth the mouse, jus and reductions have great texture sticky, smooth, creamy whatever is called for but the core tastes just burst out on to the palette.

The breakfasts are cooked by another member of the team warm fresh croissant, eggs benedict with a hollandaise sauce that is neither bland nor bitter.

I admired the cooking just in case that wasn't clear.

I am embarrassed I have never stayed at the Lakestone before back for more nights in February. Think of Tekapo and then think of one Lodge that’s the starkness of the comparison and so a single Lodge at the bottom of Pukaki is pure privileged magic.

Oh and I should say the uncomplicated but exceptional Lodge with the perfect uncluttered vibe offers interpersonal hospitality to match. Not clinical or cold not over zealous just simple gentle kindness and sincerity a 100% New Zealand experience.

I would beg to offer this is very high end in every sense and would therefore suggest the tariff is exceptional value given what is on offer.

I notice that Trip Advisor now has some supplementary questions regarding additional hygiene protocols. The South Island for South Islanders was at Level One when I visited and other than common sense nothing else is required though you can register with the app on arrival.

We spent one night at Lakestone Lodge on our way home from a weekend in Queenstown. There was a car accident on the road to the lodge and we (and all the other guests traveling that day) received a phone call to check that we were ok and not involved in the accident, a lovely thoughtful start to our stay. On arrival we were greeted at the front door and given a tour of the lodge, the staff explained all the facilities and had a great knowledge of the surrounding area, walking tracks and bike trails. There was a great media room with a big projector, the rugby was on which my partner was very pleased about. The main lounge was warm and inviting and we were encouraged to make ourselves comfortable. We could request staff assistance at any time (they offered to make us espresso coffee whenever we wanted!). We were shown our room and offered cocktails and a selection of artisan chocolates which were all delicious. The room was beautiful and so comfortable. The bathroom was clean and well equipped with luxury toiletries, the view from the bathtub was amazing and very private even with the blind open. The bed was comfortable and clean with crisp white linen, extra long pillows and additional blankets (though not used as each room has a heatpump and underfloor heating so cozy and warm!). The 3 course dinner was spectacular, a wonderful showcase of local flavours and beautifully presented. Well worth the price and good portions that left us both satisfied by the end. There was a great selection of New Zealand wines, cocktails and beers. The view from our room was absolutely phenomenal! The longer you spend looking, the more stars and planets become visible and to make the view even better you can enjoy it from both the bed and the bathtub as well as the private courtyard. The cooked breakfast was great. There were so many wonderful extra touches that we didn’t expect: the cocktails on arrival, the pillows and blankets brought to our room in the evening for outdoor stargazing, the fresh croissants brought to the table before our breakfast order. We were sad to leave and will definitely be back.

From the moment we arrived at Lakestone Lodge we felt at home and totally relaxed. We were welcomed by Isabelle who took a lot of trouble to show us around and tell us everything we needed to know about the Lodge and our room.
As the Lodge is off grid it is important that guests know and understand the nuances of being off grid and play their part in conserving power and water without compromising the enjoyment and comfort of their stay.
We were very fortunate in enjoying the most stunning weather and seeing Aoraki Mt Cook in all its majestic glory and to wake up to the sight of this snow covered mountain negated any road noise that might be apparent.
The rooms are very comfortable if a bit small but the private garden area outside each room gives the feeling of an extension of the room itself. The bathrooms are not large but perfectly acceptable and if you are someone who enjoys a luxurious soak, you can do this in your freestanding bath, with amazing views over Lake Pukaki and Mt. Cook. The Linden Leaves toiletries add to the feel of luxury of the bathroom.
The breakfasts were delicious and Steffan and his team went out of their way to give us what we wanted. Dinners too, although not cheap, are excellent with great quality food , superbly presented and all dietary requirements catered for. We decided that we would rather enjoy the luxury of dinner at the lodge than having to drive to Twizel or Tekapo to find a restaurant.
One of the most important factors for our enjoyment at Lakestone Lodge, was the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff - totally understated but nothing was left out. we really hope to visit Lakestone Lodge again and thank you all - Mike, Anna, Steffan and Issy for giving us such a wonderful time.

Absolutely loved our stay at Lakestone Lodge! Anna & Mike were very friendly as were all the staff and made us feel at home in their beautiful lodge with amazing views of Lake Pukaki through to Mt Cook. Our room and views were spectacular especially the well appointed bath with views of the lake. We had a lovely crisp walk up the hill for more amazing views of the Mackenzie country and an amazing cocktails and chocolates which were complimentary to soak up the atmosphere of the lodge. Dinner was faultless! Very inventive and tasty loved all 3 courses. Couldn’t have picked a better place to celebrate our wedding anniversary💕 breakfast was delicious too with homemade muesli and wonderful cooked breakfast too! So pleased we choose Lakestone Lodge to stay highly recommend if passing through Lake Pukaki stay here!!

Travelling with another couple, Lakestone Lodge looked like the perfect place to spend two nights over a long weekend visit to Lake Tekapo. Situated about 30 minutes out of Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki was the perfect location with views across to Mt Cook and easy access to Mt Cook Village.
Mike & Anna and their team made us feel welcome from the minute we arrived and we felt that nothing was a problem, with a stunning lodge with stunning views it was a very relaxed and enjoyable stay.
We were lucky to experience a snow fall on our 2nd day and spent the afternoon at the lodge in front of the log fire, playing cards with a platter and wine. The meals were fantastic and we enjoyed the three course dinners on both nights and both nights were delicious. The rooms are great, spacious and each facing the lake and mountains with their own private garden.
It was great to read and hear how the lodge was built and I don't think there was anything unturned when designing this beautiful off the grid lodge.
Thank you for hosting us and giving us a fantastic weekend away.

WOW WOW WOW, if you are looking for a special place to stay or to treat yourself then this is your place. The views of Lake Pukaki and Mt Cook are to die for. The lodge is cosy, the rooms beautifully appointed and warm, the bed super comfy with views of the lake and mountains from the bed, the shower and large bathtub. Nice little private outdoor space to enjoy some quiet time too. The staff (and owners) are absolutely amazing, talking to us about things to do in the area and we even got some great cooking tips from chef Steffan. A delicious continental and cooked breakfast is included in the room rate, but we highly recommend you have the 3 course dinner at the lodge ... the food both nights we stayed was exceptional (and also try some local wine). A big thank you to chef for baking a surprise birthday cake for my husband and for all the staff who came out to sing happy birthday - it was truly appreciated. My husband also had a massage onsite which he loved. Unfortunately we didn't get time to take the bikes for a spin but definitely next time. Thank you for an amazing stay.

I can't say enough about how wonderful our stay was at Lakestone Lodge. Mike greeted us as though we were long lost relatives, and our room was perfect. Each room has the same beautiful mountain views, with plenty of privacy between rooms (you can sit in a big bathtub with a glass of wine in front of a huge window looking at the mountains without having to worry about the people next door seeing you!). It was impeccably decorated with a rustic elegance that I'd want to copy at home. And I have to mention the food...we weren't sure if we wanted to spend the money on one of their dinners, but we knew we'd be tired after a long day of hiking and thought we'd eat there one night. OMG, can I just say their fabulous chef would make some of the best chefs around look mediocre! His food was not only outstanding, but so beautifully presented, it looked like artwork! I'm a vegetarian and they had no problem catering to my dietary restrictions.
We also did the night sky experience, which we totally loved and was worth it. I'll never forget swinging in those hammocks, tucked into blankets, and listening to Mike explain interesting info on our galaxy and others we can't see. Loved it there and hope to be lucky enough to go again someday!

The staff are excellent and very helpful at this lodge whose location is at the head of Lake Pukaki with clear views to Mount Cook . A telescope makes the views even better !
The location is superb , both for the views and for local and Mount Cook walks and glacier experience accessibility
Rooms are very comfortable with super king beds and great pillows and your own private mini garden looking at the lake . A good shower and large bath in the window with the same views makes things even better
Free bikes and helmets are available to use on the lakeside track .
The food is good , but not gourmet . Breakfasts had a wide choice of continental and cooked dishes with smoothies too . Dinner was plentiful - 3 courses plus bread and a decent wine list . It was rather meat based , a pity no salmon from the lake farm was offered , and a vegetarian choice was not as good , quite dry and served with the veg and sauce from the duck .
Overall this lodge is a great choice

Ok, where to start? The location - it's supreme. A the foot of Lake Pukaki with a direct line of sight to Mt Cook. Hard to beat the location. The rooms are nicely appointed, large deep soaking bath, great shower and water pressure, and a lovely firm mattress. Each room also has a private viewing courtyard that looks over the lake. The breakfast is complimentary and has both continental and cooked breakfast elements. Tea and coffee are available all day long with little treats like cakes, chocolates and fruit in the lounge area. The lodge runs astro photography nights when the weather and moon permits. There are also walks and cycling tracks in the area if you can drag yourself from the room. It's a kiwi family-run business, so nice to think you're also helping grassroots NZ, in these covid times that is incredibly important. I say, splurge a little and do yourself a favour, do deserve it!

Thank you to the team at Lakestone Lodge, especially Isabelle for the warm welcome and hospitality. The views from our bedroom and the common lounge area looked just like a postcard. On a fine day, we could see Mt Cook in the distance & the stunning turquoise blue reflecting off Lake Pukaki. At night, we sat around the fireplace outside staring into the star-filled sky. Highly recommend staying in for dinner (optional). World class chef utilising local-sourced ingredients (e.g. King Salmon, lamb & venison). 3-course menu changes daily. Generous portions, great local wine list & cocktail menu. Unexpected fine dining experience in a remote location. The stay also comes with complimentary breakfast which includes a small continental buffet and a choice from a selection of 5 “a la carte” type breakfast dishes (e.g. big breakfast, pancakes, eggs benedict etc.). It was the most cosiest and intimate stay. Not only did we thoroughly enjoy our stay with the great hospitality of staff, as the lodge only has a limited number of rooms, we got to know and chat to other guests that were also staying, which really made it all the more enjoyable. We cannot commend this place enough and definitely highly recommend! Everything was perfect!

Hi Val, So August will still be winter cold. The roads don't get covered by snow but there might be snow around and you shouldn't have any problems to drive around. You're close to Mt Cook and Lake Tekapo, so you'll have options for activities on both sides. Mt Cook is more outdoors and hikes that will be stunning if it's snowed and they're not difficult and on Lake Tekapo there are some hot springs. Regarding the helicopter, I can't remember the name of the company but you'll be able to bool directly ringing them or they can assist you at the Lodge. Otherwise, I think if you look for it with google you'll be directed to the web page where you can see the price list. Have fun planning your trip
