2023 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
Lakestone Lodge is exclusively positioned on the southern shores of Lake Pukaki with some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. The off-grid eco lodge has been designed to maximise the panoramic views. Every room and bathroom share stunning views northward over Lake Pukaki to the Southern Alps. On calm days New Zealand's highest mountain, Aoraki/Mount Cook, can be seen reflected in the turquoise glacial waters of the lake. In contrast, mountain storms rolling in over the alps, can be viewed from the comfort and warmth of this luxurious lodge. In the evenings, after watching the sun setting over the mountains, guests can enjoy some of the clearest night skies in the world as Lakestone Lodge is located in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. Lakestone Lodge, centrally located, is an ideal base for exploring Aoraki/Mount Cook and the rest of the Mackenzie District as well as for relaxing and for making use of unlimited photographic opportunities.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stunning accommodation that was like an oasis when we arrived having cycled 42km from Lake Tekapo through wind, rain, hail and 4 degrees. The baths were extremely welcoming, but so was the calm, beautifully presented rooms. There were four of us, two couples on day one of the Alps 2 Ocean cycle and due to the weather we rode the entire way without stopping, arriving just after 1pm thinking we may have to wait to check-in but no, all was ready and how lovely it was. Thaw out in the bath, relax looking at the stunning view (even in the low cloud and raining). The refreshments station has high quality teas and coffees (or they will make you one) delicious biscotti, Whittakers chocolates, rum balls. Just a lovely touch and again so welcoming after a ride, to be able to sit in a beautiful room, look at the view with a treat (or two!) and a good cuppa. Dinner was superb! Beautifully presented, delicious and good portions, not too massive, you left feeling satisfied but not bloated. One of our party is celiac and she instantly felt confident that the staff understood. Breakfast was again high quality, delicious and provided healthy options. Lakestone provided the perfect start to our week of riding and the sun came out as we ate breakfast and followed us the entire rest of the way.

We are so happy that you enjoyed your time here and enjoyed a relaxing time after cycling the Alps2Ocean. While we have a daily changing set menu, our chefs are more than happy to adapt it to any dietary requirements or preferences. We hope that you enjoyed the rest of your time on the trail. We had an excellent two days here. Great food, quiet rooms, electric bikes for hire (ours were included in a package) and all the time with direct views across Lake Pulaski to Aorangi. the staff were very obliging and always on hand with drinks, snacks etc. A perfect start to our New Zealand trip.

My husband and I visited in September enroute to Queenstown and having stayed in Tekapo and at Mt Cook numerous times we were looking for a different experience. Lakestone Lodge delivered in every way. The view is unparallel and we were lucky to wake to a view of Mt Cook from our bed. Our suite was tastefully decorated and everything, including the bath was positioned to take in the view. We had a private hot tub that was the perfect end to a day of hiking. The meals were beautifully presented and appropriately portioned. Mike and his team are welcoming and attentive but not over-bearing. The massage I enjoyed was incredible and in my mind a "must do". All we need do now is re-book and click repeat everything for our next visit!

In the middle of a short but sharp cold snap that bought snow to tekapo after weeks of heat and wind I really could not recommend a better place to be ‘stuck inside’ out of the cold and wind. The ever changing landscape framed by picture perfect ceiling to floor glass - you can spend hours with a book and THAT VIEW. The staff were more than attentive, beautifully polite and just a pleasure to be in the company of. Highly recommend pre booking the chefs choice dinner, it was a fabulous mix of local flavours all married up in perfect harmony and plated beautifully and a vast and great beverage menu to accompany the most romantic and scenic dinner I have had in a very long time . The bed was incredibly comfortable ( this is RARE I find!!) Oh and of course, Mittens- the lodge cat, who is not allowed in as to not bother guests with allergies is a beautiful wee snuggler who likes to hang with you provided you play ‘chase the stick’ made this cat lover a happy lady. Will most definitely return ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mittens defiantly tries to charm everyone despite us trying to contain her in our house she loves a good roam but we manage to keep her out of the lodge. Thanks so much for this lovely review. Mike and Anna Lakestone Lodge

What a wonderful 2-night experience with breakfasts, dinners and a packed lunch all included - and a simply magnificent setting :) The suite was small but stylish, with two easy chairs positioned to look out over a lovely private open-ended courtyard to the spectacular views of lake and mountains. The bed was firm, and the pillows even firmer, but it was no problem to have alternative pillows provided - just remember to ask before the first night :) A tea/coffee station in the room would have made it perfect for those of us who like to collapse privately at the end of the day. As it is, you need to go down to the lounge area to get drinks or wine glasses etc which was a slight negative for me, but on the other had, there was always cake, chocolates and a wide choice of teas and coffees to select from in the lounge. Overall a wonderful experience - we will be back!

Thank you B6392VJsuek. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay. We would love to have tea and coffee facilities in each room but being off grid it is a major draw on our system. The Lake View Suite does have its own facilities though and staff are happy to bring drinks down to the room. We look forward to seeing you back here. Mike and Anna Lakestone Lodge

This the place I will definitely stay again. BEST view EVER and best service. I hope I could know this place earlier in my last trip here. The room is clean and the in-house drinks are nice. Food provided is awesome. Better than five star. The team there is quite nice and friendly.

It seemed a rather remote location to find such a luxury lodge, but that was part of its charm. With only six guest rooms , there was the personal attention to detail that most boutique hotels can only aspire to. This eco-friendly resort has gorgeous views of the lake and hiking trails starting in the backyard Sumptuous breakfast included

Lakestone Lodge boasts amazing views of the turquoise blue waters of Lake Pukaki. There are thoughtful touches in the guest rooms and the main lodge area, as well. Service was friendly and accommodating as soon as we arrived. The dinner and breakfast served daily was truly delicious. We looked forward to each meal, and breakfast in bed was a huge treat. I would also recommend the night sky experience with Mike, truly magical night stargazing. 10/10 would recommend this place.
