Diamonds Athuruga stands out for its pristine cleanliness and commendable upkeep, receiving accolades from guests for its twice-daily serviced and aesthetically pleasing rooms. Although there was a mention of a slightly worn room, the hotel's amenities, including a stunning reef and quality dining, have left many travelers deeply satisfied. Despite some remarks about the high cost of excursions, the overall value is deemed exceptional, thanks to the attentive staff. The hotel's magical atmosphere and idyllic beachfront location are consistently celebrated, as is the personalized and professional service.

It is not possible to give a higher score, otherwise we would do it! We recently returned from this wonderful island where we spent a week (16/12/2024 - 24/12/2024) totally barefoot (do not bring your shoes, except for the plane trip) and breathing air of authentic sense of freedom. The place is really beautiful, the sea fabulous, the top environment to be able to unplug and recharge. We were staying in a beach bungalow, spacious to accommodate 3 people, overlooking the beautiful lagoon where sharks (totally harmless) and turtles often peeped out. Room and bathroom Maldivian spotless and tidy twice a day: cleanliness is the master. Even the vegetation on the island is well cared for, thanks to the gardeners who, before dawn, work to collect leaves so that the beach and the area in front of the rooms are always top. A super positive opinion of the cuisine: we have been to other Resorts in the Maldives and we have never found such a nice food (how many times has it happened to eat paccheri with prawns abroad??? To us, never! For some it may seem normal, for us it is not and it pleasantly surprised us). Great food and well served, prepared in show cooking and served by waiters (Mohamed Super and with an elephant memory!!!) with a constant smile on his lips: all the Resort staff is friendly, kind and smiling. Beautiful to breathe this atmosphere of sunshine. Holidays are not only places to know but also people to meet. Our thanks to all those who helped make this stay unforgettable: Titu, the grill specialist (his really good chicken), Miao and his buns, Mrs. Phia of the Management, very kind, helpful and professional, Bianca of the Boutique (Brescia greets you), and to all the guys of the Staff always present and never nagging who kept us company and extracted smiles during the week: Elena, with her advice and concrete help, it is a real pleasure to talk with her; Jade and her beautiful voice, Gabriel with sympathy, availability and her acrobatic jumps, Aurora for kindness, the biologists Miriam and Alessandra for the info they gave us making us know new things, the Maldivian guides who accompanied us on snorkeling trips. The only advice I would give is to reduce the cost of excursions which, in our opinion, are a bit too expensive. Everything else is the top. We have awarded only 5 stars because no more are allowed. If next winter we are lucky enough to be able to enjoy a trip to the Maldives again, Athuruga will see us as his guests again.

Many thanks to everyone, Annalisa, Mario and Giulia 😘

We flew in by sea plane from Male. Quite an adventure in itself, as the pilot opened up the throttle and we tore across the sea to start climbing. A short 35 minute or so flight and we touched ( or splashed ) down and taxied to the pontoon.

(The islands position on the flight path dictates you are the first to be dropped off and last to be collected, which is a great add on.)

There to meet us were the resort’s Guest Manager and team. A short transfer to the island’s jetty and we had arrived. The weather was and had been, uncharacteristically poor, but that did not diminish the beauty of this place. ( In any event, a day or so later the Sun came out. )

We were shown around and introduced to all the island has to offer. Our beach front villa sits as the name suggests, right on top of the beach. Ten yards or so and you are in pristine waters of the Indian Ocean with it’s abundant marine life, including many types of fish and shark ( all of which harmless)

The resort has its own marine biologist and aqua centre. Do go on the guided snorkelling trip. Even for beginners, it’s glorious. There’s a PADI centre for the more qualified and adventurous of course.

The staff - Simply amazing. They really have made a good holiday, a great holiday. ( sorry for the cliche..) They really are superb and cater for your every wish, with a smile and easy going nod.

Tipping - The US Dollar is king. A couple of Dollars at the bar and a 5 or ten every couple of days to a member of the front of house staff and room team, keeps the wheels running smoothly.

It is a largely Italian based resort with most of the food leaning that way, pastas, pizza, etc, which personally, we enjoyed. There are local dishes and they change daily. The BBQ Chef was particularly popular.

Internet! I guess if there was one thing that is missing, or we missed, is internet coverage. There is no TV or Radio in the accommodation. The only Internet that is available in the bar and reception and that is ‘patchy and slow’. It may be a well designed feature of the resort coordinate everyone from their rooms at night to congregate in the bar with a view to creating an entertaining bar environment?

Commendable if correct? But sadly not supported by the entertainment schedule, which was quite poor, on the most part with tired old karaoke and accompanied dancing staff amongst other fairly lacklustre entertainment in place.

What with the advent of ‘Starlink’ a little more internet access would be welcome for some, but we except, not all.

All in all. It remains a wonderful place.

Dear SnagsEngland, Thank you for sharing such a detailed and thoughtful review of your stay at Diamonds Athuruga. It is wonderful to hear that your journey began with the adventure of a scenic seaplane flight—one of the most unique ways to arrive in paradise. As you mentioned, our island’s location means guests are the first to be welcomed and the last to say goodbye, allowing for the fullest experience of our tranquil surroundings. Despite the unusual weather at the start of your trip, we are delighted that you could still appreciate the island’s beauty and, of course, the pristine waters teeming with marine life. Our house reef is one of the true highlights, and it is great to hear that you enjoyed the guided snorkeling experience with our marine biologists. For those looking to explore deeper, our PADI-certified dive center offers incredible excursions to some of the best dive sites in the Maldives. Your kind words about our team mean so much to us. They take great pride in creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and we are pleased that their hospitality made your holiday even more memorable. We understand your feedback regarding the entertainment and internet access. Athuruga has always embraced a ‘digital detox’ concept, allowing guests to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in nature. That said, we appreciate that connectivity is important for some travelers, and we continuously look at ways to enhance guest experiences while maintaining the peaceful, relaxed ambiance of the island. It was our pleasure to host you, and we truly hope to welcome you back to our little slice of paradise in the future. With warm Indian Ocean regards, Your Athuruga Team

Just returned from Athuruga after a wonderful two week stay. I left very fearful about the weather which in February was, strangely, quite bad. Luckily we always had sunshine with some small showers at night, only twice, and a few clouds. Even though the hotel is not brand new, I did not perceive any signs of decadence: the predominant white color conveys a sense of freshness and cleanliness. Cleanliness which is noticeable throughout the island and in the rooms, serviced twice a day. Our beach was no. 4, excellent location because it is located (like all those up to number 20) on the beach in front of the lagoon, the part of the sea with the highest water which allowed you to swim every day. In the rear part, however, the water is shallower and, after a short stretch, you enter the reef next to the docking pier. There are other entry/exit points, depending on the current and the very good guys in charge of the aquatic part (I especially thank the kindness of Matteo, Roberta and Miriam) accompany you every day at 11am and 4pm for outings on the reef. I must especially thank the exquisite Francesca who, since our arrival, has worked to make our stay wonderful, not least the preparation to celebrate my birthday. I also don't want to neglect the friendly Giada who encouraged me with her sweetness on the first day of snorkeling and cheered us up in the evenings and afternoons with her voice. The catering was excellent: every day, both for lunch and dinner, there were many dishes of pasta, rice, local and themed specialties (which changed during the week), delicious grilled meat and fish, desserts, pizza and salads . In short, nothing was missing even for breakfast (omelettes and eggs in all ways, pancakes, waffles, French toast) and above all delicious tropical fruit served both in express smoothies and freshly cut. What I liked most, in my seventh time in the Maldives (starting back in 1982), was the feeling of peace and tranquility that we breathed in Athuruga: although the island was full, it seemed to be in a semi- desert. I didn't mention the color of the water because this is always the best in the Maldives and it doesn't change much from one island to another. Generally I prefer to change islands, having to return to the Maldives, but this time I don't rule out returning. Thanks to everyone (staff, waiters, bartenders) and also to the nice and professional general manager!

We visited Athuruga in November 2023. It was our 17th stay on our favourite Maldivian island, and it did not disappoint. We were delighted to be given our preferred water villa, no. 18 on the reef side, with the resident octopus in a rock below the front door. We arrived to a ‘Welcome back’ message in flowers on our bed and Husnee kept our villa spotless throughout our stay. Thank you, Husnee. The water villas had started to show their age, so we were pleased to see the gradual replacement of worn plastic blinds with smart white wind breaks.
We ate most meals in the over water restaurant, with its interesting menu and tasty, attractively presented food. Our waiter, Abdul (Ameen), had only been there three weeks but he did a great job, quickly getting to know our food and drink preferences, and entertaining us with his poems and chat, ranging from the meaning of life to Taylor Swift.
As always, we found the Athuruga staff warm and welcoming, and were touched to be greeted by name as we walked around on the island. The weekly Maldivian dinners were as good as ever, and it was nice to bump into our waiter from the year before, Ali.
Finally, of course, there was the house reef, with its wonderful variety of colourful marine life. We are counting the days till we return in October this year – beautiful wildlife, comfortable and relaxing surroundings, delicious food - well worth the five and a half thousand mile journey. We can’t wait.

Jonathan and Margaret

Dear Jonathan and Margaret, Thank you so much for your heartwarming review and for choosing Diamonds Athuruga for the 17th time! It is an absolute honor to be your favorite Maldivian island, and we are beyond thrilled that your stay in November 2023 was once again memorable. It’s wonderful to hear that we were able to welcome you back to your preferred water villa, no. 18, and that the resident octopus was still there to greet you! We’re so glad Husnee took such good care of your villa, and we’ll be sure to pass on your thanks. The updates to the water villas are part of our commitment to keeping Athuruga fresh while maintaining the charm that you and so many other guests love. You will see some other updates in your upcoming visit. We are delighted that you enjoyed the meals at our overwater restaurant and that Abdul (Ameen) quickly made an impression with his service, poems, and interesting conversations! It’s those personal touches that truly make the experience special, and we’re so pleased you felt warmly welcomed by all the familiar faces on the island. The house reef never fails to amaze, and we are thrilled that it continues to provide you with such vibrant and colorful marine encounters. Knowing that you’re already counting the days until your return in October fills us with joy. We are looking forward to welcome you back for your 18th stay, and we’ll have everything ready for you to enjoy yet another magical experience on our beautiful island! With warm Indian Ocean regards, Your Athuruga Team

Landed here for an overbooking of another chosen atoll, we could not but accept an upgrade so... We stayed in Athuruga the first week of February, we had a great accommodation in beach villa with Maldivian shower, came out of the patio we had two sunbeds directly on the beach and a few meters from the beautiful lagoon. The property also has a water villa with restaurant and bar and spa, the main buffet restaurant where we ate from appetizers to dessert always divinely, note the fish and meat grill for lunch and dinner managed by the fantastic Titu with skill and smile pleases all guests! We must say thank you to all the cooks and waiters who with a smile and so much kindness served us all week, a special thanks to Sailam and Hibrahim. There are also in resort a divine center and a wather sport where you can rent free snorkeling equipment and book the various excursions proposed, or subscribe to the various daily activities. Then we also wanted to thank once again Elena, Giada and Sebastiano di Francorosso and also Gabriele, Federica, Francesco E Sandie from the Diamonds staff who made us feel at home! Good guys always ready to fulfill every request and always available for a chat and good laughs with guests (at this point I would put The final cantdown in the background 😉😂 .. note for Gabriele)... It was a wonderful week, the weather was always sunny, we saw fish of all varieties, razes, sharks, parrotfish, butterflyfish, turtles, small iguanas geckos, flying foxes and endless palm trees, in short, a paradise! We highly recommend Diamond Athuruga! A hug to all the guys from Rosy and Paolo!

We spent seven fantastic days at the Splendido Diamonds Resort in Athuruga. Fine sand as white as talcum powder, crystal clear water rich in marine fauna, so much so that you can also do great snorkeling around the atoll, we even spotted the turtle. The cleanliness of the rooms is impeccable so much so that they come twice a day. The food is very good, varied and plentiful, like the bar where you can eat whatever you want. But the real difference is made by the staff, very kind, polite, always smiling and where their satisfaction is your well-being. A Special Thanks to MIRIAM from the Swimming center, she knows the reason. We have been traveling the world for 30 years, and rarely have we left our hearts as much as in this place. Well done and thanks for everything!

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of our honeymoon trip. It was lovely but by no means the perfect finale to our honeymoon we had planned or expected.

It is the Maldives so the island itself it beautiful. It is picture perfect and exactly what you see/expect from the Maldives.

We stayed in a water villa, it was lovely and the room itself was clean and comfortable. That said there were a lot of small flies in the bathroom area. The curtains at the patio door a little mouldy and the external shutters dirty. Perhaps it shows more because it is all white.

The food in the water villa restaurant was lovely and staff were attentive enough during service (the only criticism is that drink service can be a little slow). Out with the set meal times I did not see and wasn't aware of any snacks provided only the main bar for drinks.

The biggest issue I have with the resort is the distinct lack of communication and the attitude of front of house staff. We had this 'perfect' end to our honeymoon planned for months. We sent several emails to the hotel none of which got a response (unless my husband called them at 0630 GMT). They did manage to provide the honeymoon package however, we had requested dinner on the beach on our first night and a few other things (all additional cost). On arrival we had to wait 2 hours to be shown to our room, we then discovered that the dinner on the beach had not been booked nor had any of the other things. We got a phone call to say that they could not book us in that night as it requires 24 hours notice (despite being emailed and called weeks in advance) they also said the weather was not great that night (it was fine) and in the end we settled for the following evening.... Romantic dinner on the beach with the first games of the World cup blaring in the background..... not quite what we had planned!!!

We also asked in the emails we sent if we could have a late checkout, this was met with silence by email and phone calls. We asked when we got there and during our stay and in the end were told no which is fine however, we had to wait 2 hours to check into our room after we arrived on the island (we arrived 1500 got to our room at 1700) I can only assume this was due someone else having a late checkout. We were advised we could leave our luggage at reception and use the public shower prior to our departure (not until 1640) which meant we could still enjoy our last day. We went to get changed only to discover our luggage had been put on the boat, with staff looking blankly, my husband ended up going to retrieve our luggage so we could get changed .

In all it was good, definitely not 5 star though with terrible communication which tainted the 'perfect' end to our honeymoon trip.

My wife and I have just returned from this wonderful holiday at Diamonds Athuruga (December 5 to 13) which far exceeded our expectations. Lovely place!!! We thank Elena di Francorosso who pleased us immediately with an accommodation in a wonderful Junior suite (No. 37) on the beach. Not least the water villa n° 17 fairytale sunset side. Very kind and professional present at all our requests has always satisfied us. Thanks to the biologists Alessandra and Miriam who accompanied us on our snorkeling trips and on the excursion to see the whale shark. A unique emotion that we will never forget!!! Jade with her wonderful voice, Aurora and Gabriel with their smile and courtesy could not conclude this amazing group in the best way. The resort staff is always friendly and attentive, never intrusive. At the main restaurant and also at that of the water villa the very kind waiters and always with a smile.  Great the very good grilled Titu and the very nice pizza Moti. The food really good and quality in both restaurants. An extra star for the water villa restaurant with à la carte service. Good cleaning of the rooms carried out twice a day. Thanks also to the resort management who allowed us to have lunch and use the water villa until the departure time, in the late afternoon, of our seaplane at no additional cost.  What about.... a paradise on earth!!! Rating 5 stars. Giuseppe and Antonella

Everything about this place is special, we couldn't wish for anything better for our honeymoon trip! Food was delicious, water willa was always clean and cosy with breathtaking views each morning, afternoon and evening. People was kind and helpful. It is not as big of a place as the others islands are, but it wasn't a problem for us - it was a treat. Because of it there were no kids, no loud people- it was just perfect. I really hope for getting back to this magical place some day.

Very quiet island and well maintained facility. But the difference is made by the Athuruga staff who are fantastic. Sympathy and kindness from everyone. I recommend attending the presentation by marine biologist Alessia on sharks, and for those who don't already have one, getting their diving license with the diving instructors Davide and Adam who are very good. The only flaw is that if you want wi-fi in your room you have to pay for it.

Beach bungalows are great and better during any storms in my view. You can visit the water villa restaurant and sit to watch the sunset with cocktails even if you;re in a beach bungalow - as well as dining there

Since you are on the Maldives, you don't really have a dress code. At lunch time many people come in their swimming dress, ladies might have an additional clothe. At evening time even a shorts and shirt or polo shirt is fine. However, you might see as well ladies in dinner dress, which is as well ok. Hope it will help
