Taina and her family make you feel right at home. Food was great and plentiful. Room and bathroom were basic, but clean and spacious. Taina went out of her way to make us comfortable. Maps and books on Tonga are available to borrow and Taina is happy to arrange for trips. It was raining most of the time we were there, so we just relaxed and read.

As 'Eua is completely different to the other islands of Tonga I wanted to go there for hiking on the rain forest. Taina's Place's located in the middle of the island, what's perfect because you can go easily to the south, east and west sides of the island. The north walk's a bit further but you can go in the school bus.
They provide a helpful map of the island with accurate information for most of the walks.
It's runned by a very friendly Tongan family. They've four or five dogs. If you don't like dogs, better if you don't go there.
Rooms are basic (bed and mosquito net) and there isn't hot water. The kitchen isn't too big, but more than enough. And you'll find a few shops 10 min walk from Taina's.

My wife and I spent 2 nights at Taina's Place during our week long honeymoon to Tonga, and agree that our time there was the highlight of our trip. Although Taina's Place is a guest house, it felt more like a home stay as we were treated like honoured family friends due to their friendliness and personal attention.

We visited the other two accommodation options while on our island tour and were sure we made the right choice by staying at Taina's Place as it is very beautiful, as well as being noticeably cooler than the other places due to its proximity to the forest.

Ana (Manager) and her sister-in-law Tovi were super organized and quick to respond to emails, and made our time in 'Eua very enjoyable, even taking the time during the late afternoons to help my wife and I track down some descendants of one of my wife's ancestors that live in 'Eua. We also recommend the island tour with some of the boys.

Great spot, friendly and loving family, and have customer service as a top priority. We'll be back one day...

T$60 pn so yes its very cheap for the Islands but you get what you pay for perhaps? The gardens are really nice and the location at the end of the island is convenient for a few of the walking trails. The main problem though is the kitchen and internal area. The place is co-habited with about ten dogs and two cats plus extended family members and the dogs are not house trained so be careful where you step in the morning in the kitchen (not joking!). It wouldn't be unfair to describe the kitchen as squalid and filthy, the family actually appear to cook on an open fire in an out-house. You will need to use the kitchen as they don't offer much food. You can request breakfast and dinner (in advance $$$) but more likely you will be eating instant noodles and preparing your lunch among the grime. There are no alternative eating options nearby. I've done a lot of backpacking over the years (which is the likely market here) and I've considered this review a lot and of course the owners need the income but from a tourists perspective they are missing the mark. What you have read in older reviews has simply evaporated. Perhaps you are a well intentioned tourist who likes a project and can offer your services for free to help this place get back on track?

We stayed here for 2 nights and were not happy. The place is run by Taina's son and his wife and their family. They were friendly and did their best to be accomodating, however it did feel like we were kind of in the way. We made the booking over a month in advance of our stay and when we got to the island, it turns out that they had no idea of our booking. After over an hr of waiting, we had to go to Ovavu resort, by the ferry to call and check if someone was coming to pick us up and it was a good thing we did as they were not aware of us coming.

We stayed in the private room with ensuite. It was very basic, which was not too much of an issue, however, what looked like bug eggs falling from the celing were. We werent aware of what it was till our second night as we though it was sand and was quite confused as we would keep cleaning it off and it would somehow reappear. It wasnt until i stood up on the bed and checked the celing with a light that we discovered what it was. The second and most major issue was the dogs. There are 16 dogs on the property and all of them decided to bark and holler and carry on at about 1:30 am to 4:30 am, with all the noisy activity taking place at our bedroom window....which could not be closed. suffice to say we spent both nights sleepless and uncomfortable and the accompanying days very tired. As a side note, the dogs themselves were in a very poor state. They were covered in fleas and ticks and severely malnourished as they were fed when the owners were not too tired to feed them. This was heartbreaking.

During the day the place was pretty much abandoned and we were left alone on the property. This would have been ok if we were closer to town, however, we were pretty much in the middle of nowhere and without food and water and very tired due to the lack of sleep.

On a positive note, the dinner and breakfast was delicious and by far the best food we had eaten our entire trip. They did put out citronella candles for us to help with the mosquitos and were friendly and as helpful as they could be.

Overall this was the worst place that we stayed at while in Tonga.

We stayed here for 2 nights (we were supposed to stay for 3 but we were forced out due to a storm approaching ).
First the positives: the location is wonderful, with lovely gardens, and we had two dinners that were abundant and tasty.
They tried to be nice and friendly, but it felt forced and awkward. They tried to tell us things that felt like a response to the reviews here on trip advisor, such us a random sentence on the fact that they feed their dogs.
It is true that is full of dogs that don't look happy and they sleep on the tables, however they are not aggressive or noisy. The room was far from being clean and we didn't get all the linen. The common bathroom, on the other hand, was unexpectedly clean.
When we arrived they promised a pick up that didn't show up, so we had to call and wait for 1h30. The problem is that the communication goes through a guy who lives on an other island and has clear difficulties to communicate with the people at the lodge.
It was more awkward than anything, I will not define it as bad. It is clear that the place is not anymore what it used to be 5 Years ago, when Taina was alive.
I just have the feeling that the family is simply not interested in the lodge and just waits for it to crumble into pieces.

I stayed two nights there and I should definitively have read the most recent comments about that place. They are all true.
The family is friendly but the place really smells like wet dogs absolutely everywhere (fortunately except in the guests room). Chairs, couch in the common place, kitchen..., smell so strong of wet dogs that you don't want to be there for a long time.
No breakfast or meal provided unless you pay extra. I tried the diner once. The second night I cooked myself.

We spent 2 nights at Taina’s place (from the 3rd to the 5th of August 2017). I made my choice based on the previous comments and pictures. Unfortunately, the accommodation has completely changed in a very bad way!

First of all, when we arrived, we met Teo and Taina who weren’t welcoming at all. They stared at us and barely greeted us. However, they should have been aware of our arrival because I had booked the room a month in advance. There was also a guy living there who systematically ignored us and made us feel uncomfortable. He was even smoking in the common areas, even though it wasn’t allowed. Most of the time, when we were asking them something, we always had the feeling to annoy them.

According to the website, the place offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. We wanted to eat local, so we decided to have breakfast and dinner. What a huge mistake! For instance, the first day, they served us 3 toasts filled up with can corned beef and can spaghetti with 3 cold eggs. It is not the kind of breakfast that everybody can eat. We would have preferred some eggs with plain toasts and some fruits from the garden. Dinner wasn’t good either. But the worst thing was hygiene! In the morning, we saw several suspicious puddles in the kitchen and in the living room. The thing is that there are about 15 dogs running everywhere. They aren’t fed properly and they don’t look in good shape at all! We also think that they are mistreated because when we tried to play catch with one of them, it didn’t understand and got very scared (probably thinking that we would hit it with the stick).

The shower was ok, it was very basic and rustic, which we don’t mind at all. The room was very basic too, but we couldn’t close one of the windows.

The only positive thing is that the place is quite well located if you like walking. There are a few nice spots not too far away (Smoking Caves, Rat Caves…). I also want to say that there was a guide who did some gardening on the property. And this guy was the only friendly and welcoming person there! We asked him some advice about the walks around and he gladly helped us. He even brought us mosquito coal. Unfortunately, he was the only one.

This place has a real potential but it’s been wasted! Go somewhere else!

No pick - up transport (had to ring multiple times for pick up)
Had no room available (even though I had confirmed booking), hosts made up a room with no privacy (room next to lounge with curtains pulled over - no door), no lights, bugs flying around, smoking in lounge, kitchen was dirty and multiple dogs running around. Very disappointing with our experience as I was there to have a relaxing holiday to enjoy Eua Island but unfortunately all other accommodation was booked out and we left on the ferry the next day.

Taina's place is located in the bush but you can get to the next village or the wharf hitchhiking. I enjoyed my stay there because the People who live there treat you in a very personal way and you do not get the feeling they were after your money (e.g. when they invite you to have a kava, it is an honest invitation, they used to give us their eggs and stuff when we forgot to buy some...). you can do several hikes starting at tainas and they offer you a map.
The only problems I need to mention is their water problem (only tap water during the day time, no hot showers) and their beds that are uncomfortable (but cheap). If you want to have a shower anyway you can boil water and put it in a bucket and use it for washing. They offer free banana( there's always a bunch hanging at their house), kitchen use, and drinking water.
