Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We stayed here the night of May 7th 2021. Was up graded to a better room. A few drinks in the bar, along with oysters and Blue cod and chips. Shared bathroom and toilet, squeaky floor boards. Comfortable clean rooms, good breakfast. Good over night stay before catching ferry to Stewart Island.

A very lovely pub where the locals were welcoming and an outstanding landlady. Just stopped in for a quick drink and enjoyed every bit of the vibe. Well stocked bar, plenty of parking and looked like a tasty menu. Has a lot of history/photos on the walls - built in 1861

The room was cosy with heater provided and light breakfast was available. Bathroom facilities are not great but did the job for one night. The bar was however a bit overwhelming with drunken loud swearing patrons who were continuing to be served alcohol. I went to my room around 9 and the noise from the bar continued to midnight with further noise until 1 am from what I think was staff clearing up. This was not just usual noise from a bar it was horrendous. I raised these concerns in feedback to the hotel before leaving reviews. The response was "as stated we are a hotel. are you a trained bar manager.". It's a shame really as if the staff dealt with patrons who were over the top then thus would be a nice enough stop over point. Perhaps further staff training in customer relations would be helpful

Just loved this friendly historic Hotel. Rooms and bathrooms spotlessly clean with a great breakfast available 24hrs. What service. And the added bonus of the wall art view outside our window. Would definitely be back. Thanks

This is a genuinely local pub with an old school vibe. Really welcoming landlady and well stocked bar. Great place to drop in for a drink and the menu looked good too. If you prefer a relaxed experience with a slice of local history you will love this pub.

I stayed at the a Eagle on my last day of walking the Te Araroa. Cold, wet and wind-battered, I staggered into the bar and received the warmest, friendliest greeting a thru-hiker could every want at the end of a 3000 km trek. Owners, Yadran and Haylee, made me feel most at home here. A hot chocolate and sandwich were brought promptly as my clothes were dried. This hotel is historic like many of the buildings on the Bluff waterfront. It has a charming renovated bar and game room at street level with single, double and dorm rooms upstairs. The rooms are simple, clean, and priced right for the budget traveler. It seems that the backpacker crowd has yet to discover this place, although it has much to offer beyond the average hostel. Free wifi and continental breakfast. Kitchen, lounge and bar food available. I had local blue cod and chips with side salad that was delicious. But what really made the stay unique for me was the genuine reception of the owners and refreshing mix of locals, ship workers and hunters. It's a gem of history in Bluff where a charming past meets an authentic, hospitable present. Highly recommend!

Went down on ANZAC day and found only this place serving food. The hotel was buzzing with guests who had just finished the dawn service and attended the parade. The food was delicious and the portions HUGE. On the downside, there is room for improvement in the "standard of service" certainly short staffed for a busy bar and restaurant!!!

Overall--7/10
